- One of the cheapest mosaic substrates that can be used outside is a tile. - IMPORTANT PLEASE READ - When it comes to sealing some people choose not seal when using thinset, there preference is to wet the area down and the water absorbs into the substrate rather than zapping the moisture out of the thinset which works well. When using a sealant there is a chance it could fail which means your mosaic could fail as the thinset is sticking to the sealant. I use Laticrete thinset and in many cases Laticrete Hydroban which is a water proofing membrane/sealant. To seal or not to seal is a personal choice, you need to choose the best option to suit your needs and as always read the manufacturers data sheets so you can make an informed decision on whatever products you use.

Treasury Road I’ve watched most of your videos and I’m try to remember what substrate, adhesive, edging, tessera you suggest for outdoors each time. Then there are things not to use outside (eg jewellery, Wood edging etc) that I’m trying to sort through from watching lots of hours of videos... so yes, from beginning to end, can be a demo.. just a suggestion. I know these videos take a lot of work.

Only just watched this -4 years later Peter. Great video but I just wondered if there were other ways to frame a tile used as a substrate rather than drill them?

You recommend using hi fired tiles for substrate. How do you know from eyeballing tile at a thrift store which is and isn't hi fired. Cheers, Marcia
Just put a drop of water on the back if it’s not absorbed into the tile it’s high fired. 😊

How would I know if a tile is "high fired"?

You can apply a drop of water on the back and if it beads its high fired as the droplet is not being absorbed into the tile, the quicker the droplet is absorbed the lower the firing is. You can also ask the retailer if you are buying them new, generally porcelain tiles are high fired. :)

Thankyou so much, a good idea but there are a quite a lot of tutorials on CZcams that show you how to use one for beginners, use a battery one not an electric one for this process and just read the manual so you become familiar with its features, safety requirements and just treat it with respect. :)

Thankyou very much Michelle. I can’t comment specifically about your project because there are variables that l cannot see. People do mosaic onto metal however it depend on the type of metal, the condition, the environment it’s in, etc. l would suggest looking up Aureleo Rosana on Facebook he has made some great tutorials on what to look out for an how to mosaic onto metal. He is also in the Facebook group Mosaic Mentoring. 😊

Hi Peter. Thanks for the video. Question on how you hang projects built on tiles. I saw your response in another comment that you use chain or rope through the 2 holes. But how do you attach those? Is there any way to install hangers (similar to the way its done for Wedi board) when using tile substrates? I understand the exact method used with Wedi Board wouldn't work since the tile is hard and you couldn't get the hardware to bite into the substrate. But is there any approach that is similar that would work?
Hi Christopher, thankyou. When l attach rope to a tile it’s because the mosaic is kind of earthy, so in that case l just have two knots showing in the front or the back. This stops the rope from pulling through the holes. If l am attaching chain to the tile l will use anything, wire, clips, rings anything that’s neat but works with the piece. I don’t know of anything that’s is similar to the process of Wedi Hangers. Although in saying that you may be able to use flat head bolts with large washers on the front of the tile and Drings on the back. This would cause a bit of a raise on the front of tile where the bolt head and washer are. But an adhesive with body to it you should be able to mosaic over it. 😊
So is it feasible to use a carbon hole saw to make a three inch hole. I know that's weird. But my goal is to place a different coloroured circle inside the hole. You know... Art!
Lol It doesn’t sound weird to me at all, if you can do the hole size you need it will look great with a colour inside it. What you need l can’t advise you l haven’t ever made that size. But l would think you may need a diamond hole saw. 😊
When you use a tile as a substrate Peter what sealer do you use and what hanging system please
I only use small tiles and drill 2 holes in the top like in this video and use chain, rope or anything depending on the environment its going into and the look of the mosaic. When using tile or slate the larger you go the heavier it gets especially when you add the mosaic to it so I only use it for small pieces. The sealant is dependent on what's available in your country but generally a penetrating sealer, Bunnings sell them if you're in Australia, I don't seal it if the tile isn't porous. There are people fore and against sealing substrates so you will get conflicting advice on that. :)

Thanks for the video, this is a really clever idea! Is there any particular product you'd recommend to seal the tile at the back, like regular tile and grout sealer, or a glue that works well? And would the sealant still be necessary if the mosaic will be made using thinset instead of a tile adhesive?
Thankyou very much. You can seal the back of the tile with Laticrete Hydroban or any other suitable sealer, just have a read of the manufacturers stat sheets to ensure its suitable for the substrate, the tess and the environment its going into. Some people seal their substrates and others dont, its a personal choice, I prefer too especially in a freeze thaw environment where water droplets can expand and contract in the tile itself causing failure of the mosaic even when using thinset as the adhesive.
