Nitro RC Car Revival - Can We Start It After Sitting For 22 Years?!

  • With enough fear and brake cleaner we can start anything!
    We found this old thing in a box in a closet and instead of just leaving it alone like a sane person, I decided to pull it out start messing with it. First things first - this is a Duratrax Maximum BX. It was originally sold by Tower Hobbies and this was the RTR version. While it has been sitting for years, it appears to be complete minus the body - though it must have had a second life as a saw dust collection system.
    I started by replacing the dirty fuel line with a new line/filter combo from Du-bro (P/N 680). Be sure to open the filter up and make sure your filter screen is actually covering the outlet hole and remove all the little bits of aluminum leftover from machining.
    www.amazon.com...
    Once that was all squared away, I topped her off with Sidewinder off-road fuel. It's a 20% nitro blend that's a little bit higher in oil content for more bashing protection.
    www.amazon.com...
    For spark I was actually surprised it was quite hard to find a modern glow plug equivalent for the discontinued DTXG3001, DTXG3003 and the sorta available DTXG3005 but wrong temperature gold plug. I used the Dynamite glow plug as a replacement and it worked great for me. So hopefully this helps somebody find that a DYN2500 plug works great for Torq 12 or Torq 16 engines. Those engine are used in the Duratrax Maximum BX, ST and MT.
    www.amazon.com...
    Finally we got her running and immediately flipped it - Now I have even more to repair... I'm gonna get her back together, swap out the aftermarket wheels and tires for the stock ones and try to find a body. If anybody has any leads on a replacement body for the Duratrax Maximum BX buggy or can recommend another body that fits it would be a huge help!

    Got the maximum mt w the TORQ .16 engine when I was 15. Found nearest hobby shop at that time around 2001 in Salem VA which was 2 hours away and called them to c if they had the maximum mt and to my insane luck they had one in so of course I began to beg my dad to get it for me. About 3 weeks later I was on my way to pick up my first ever Hobby Grade RC that was NITRO POWERED! I was the happiest kid around, bet ya lol but it was very very hard to start, kept flooding it, wore blisters on my fingers but boy when it finally fired up the first few moments I was hooked, never knew about 2 stage idle and it much about how to tune it good, had lots of problems, but wouldn't change any of it for nothing.

I’ve tracked down two bodies that seem close but are for way new models of RC cars. At some point it might be worth it to get the mount remade in CAD and 3D printed! That’s going to be in the second video - this was just to revive it back to life. Once I dug into it, no amount of tuning would fix the issues it had. The exhaust manifold gasket was blown out on the bottom and the carb o-ring was in pieces. Now that those are fixed and it’s been adjusted it’s doing great.

    Does it matter what fuel I use can someone help I brought a really good rc car from mate and I don’t know what fuel to use because some people say nitro but I don’t know what kind or if you have to mix 🤨🤨

    • @MatthewFinlay
      @MatthewFinlay  Před 3 lety +1

      Solid question I chose Sidewinder branded off-road fuel because it’s approx 20% nitro and heavier on oils. Since this was on older engine with a whole bunch of unknowns I wanted the extra lubrication. On most any other car I’d use a name brand 20% nitro with 12% (ish) oils. Some fuels need a bit of tuning so I stick with Sidewinder for everything for simplicity. Once you get in better engines and race level things or want to monitor engine head temps you could experiment with higher nitro contents for peak power - I’m just a hobbiest so I just want them to start, run and bash and not have to worry about fuels. Nope to mixing - the fuels come premixed. I get mine from Amazon or our local hobby/model train store.

    • @MatthewFinlay
      @MatthewFinlay  Před 3 lety +1

      Any good one will work! I’d stay away from anything that is about the size of a AA battery - I don’t know the name of the cell they use off the top of my head but they are just too small IMO for a day of fun and consistently lighting off a plug. Get something that has what looks like a small C or even a D battery - the extra capacity won’t hurt anything and it’ll come in handy when you try and clear out a flooded engine. The longer one are generally used for airplanes to reach through the cowl plastics or RC cars/trucks that have engine under the body. I had one once like that and drilled a whole in the plastics and used a longer reach igniter to reach it. I wouldn’t pay extra for a longer one in normal use though - it’ll just flop around more as you’re trying to use it.

    • @MatthewFinlay
      @MatthewFinlay  Před 3 lety

      I’d just search/Amazon RC car glow plug igniter or along those lines. If you don’t add the “RC” part in you’ll get weird results cause some (most) diesels use glow plugs or at least some version of them as well and it’ll mess up your results.
