This 75-minute video lesson is part 1 of 2 exploring an in-depth look at Sonata No.21 in C major, Op.53, 1st movement (Allegro con brio). This tutorial covers measures 1-156 (the exposition and development sections of this sonata). At the end of the part 2 tutorial, Josh shares a performance of the piece. Composed in 1803-1804, and published in 1805, this sonata is dedicated to one of Beethoven’s friends, patrons, and supporters - Ferdinand Ernst, Count von Waldstein. Waldstein was influential in paving the way for Beethoven’s move to Vienna and introducing him to Viennese nobility and circles of influence, thus helping to further develop Beethoven’s career through these acts. For this reason, this sonata is often referred to as the “Waldstein” sonata. This tutorial discusses many areas of focus including tips on how to increase speed, how to create more effective textures and articulation, many ideas for better voicing, fingering suggestions, pedaling suggestions, tips for dynamics and interpretation (and how to vary the interpretation on repeated passages), how to create variety with character and effect, tips for reducing tension, how to play softer, strategies and exercises for aligning the hands with more precision, and many other technical and musical tips to help you become as efficient as possible in your practice sessions.

So wonderful to hear you playing this magnificent work. I look forward to the next few tutorials. Amazing how Waldstein thought Beethoven would take up where Mozart left off, but lord. He just sky rocketed beyond, in my humble opinion. At least took the piano sonata to a whole new level.

The first several times I heard this piece I was sure that 4:05 was some sort of sound effect built into old pianos. 😂
