One knows all the great performers with this well-known sonata by Beethoven. And what I liked most is that the youthful, free and very loose feeling is reproduced without feigned deep feeling, but very natural. Also, the softer touch is very pleasant, because one is used to the harshness of some male older colleagues the sforzati and extreme dynamics. The interpretation reproduces the type you see and that is authentic. Admirable performance.
Could someone tell CZcams that Beethoven didn't write ad breaks into his music (two in first movement already). And could someone tell advertisers that I (and you I hope) will never buy their product if they have their ads placed to interrupt the music.
Absolutely will not buy their products after interupting the magic of a Jussen brother ❤
I’ll never buy their products either.. Absolutely not. That goes for the adverts on Fritz Kreisler’s quartet in A too! Be Warned
There is CZcams Premium, you know? Without ads.
Oh god the entitlement
Before Grammarly® he couldn't write a word!
From the 14 commencing chords, at the perfect speed and sonority, a most beautiful and stirring rendition. All good wishes for your future from an 85 year old who has heard many performances.
Beautiful to hear your words on this.
What is your favorite sonata?

Lucas and Arthur used to be regular guests at a restaurant I worked at, always accompanied by such proud parents! If someone had told me I'd be writing screenplays while listening to their gorgeous music so many years later, I wouldn't have believed it... Just absolutely mesmerizing...
Wouter Joosen: What a lucky guy! Having those boys and their parents at your restaurant! Would give anything to be in your place... such nice people that family ...

Kudos to the sound engineer for capturing the full rich power of the low notes, particularly in the 3rd mvt. There are many recordings where those get lost.
I truly enjoyed the slower tempo of the first movement. So many performers just play it at such a blinding speed.
I agree. Arrau's too on here.
I heard a show on NPR saying according to Beethoven's notes, he wanted everything to be played super fast. Faster than anyone would play then now. He was a genius but crazy. Good thing we have music producers now to tamp down the crazy.
Absolutely! I am always saying to my students; "just because you can play it that fast doesn't mean that you should! Always be musical!"
@@alexscott1257 My teacher always said, playing fast is just what many people do to gloss over their lack of emotional depth.
Daniel Barenboims interpretation will always be my favourite as in terms of speed it is very similar to this.
I'm only a minute into this and I can already tell that this wil rival it!
Even Valentina Lisitsa restrains herself in the first movement deapite being an absolute speed freak
This dude young af and plays this sonata damn near perfect, amazing performance
"Glissando" at 24:27. Wow! Great performance, Lucas. Thank you.

Simply, the most beautiful reading I know of this piece. So much joy, sense of humor, depth, showmanship… pure Beethoven
I cued to about 14:40 when I opened this and read some of the comments as I listened to the bridge from the second to third movements, then re-upped to the beginning of the first movement and listened all the way through.. Are they commenting on this performance? This young fellow is doing better than 99.999% of the pianists in the world would be able to play this difficult piece, playing with spirit and joy and commendable accuracy. BRAVO, Lucas!
That boy has got some WILD finger flexibilty. I find the tempo and rhythm just right for a recital. No keyboard banging and holding the immortal beloved's dynamics in great balance.
He might be left handed, though. I am right handed and when I play fast passages with my left hand, my pinky goes up all the time xD
Please listen to the whole of this interpretation! I love everything in it: the tempo, the voicing and the technique, his musicallity with such a maturity! 👏🎶 Outstanding! I you weren't a fan now you are. These boys, his brother too, are amazing.
Lucas bursts on on the scene with intense energy and passion which he is able to sustain through out. He never tires so it seems. He has a storehouse of moods and they are expressed through his amazing fingers. Indeed, when I listen, any depression flees. Thank you!
I have travelled the world to listen to this young Maestro, and have yet to be disappointed. Superb.
Dear Lucas, that Beethoven "Waldstein" Sonata is my Christmas gift 2018. Thanks a million. May God bless and protect you and your young brother for ever. Keep going and be as happy and successful as one can be.
How in heaven's name could anyone thumbs-down that?! A superb, vigorous performance, with wonderful light and shade.
Idk, those who disliked it will face something worse in their musical lives and never get their own musical jobs. Ignore them anyway. I can't even express how beautiful this performance is. 😍
This is CZcams; there will always be dislikes.
I find the performance unmusical. It sounds over-rehearsed. Am I a bad person now or do I just have bad taste?
@@1q2w3e4r5t6zism Both!
Too sad you couldn' t enjoy it. If you found the performance unmusical just shows your own limitations to listen. I'm marvelled how the boy understands Beethoven's Waldstein being so young. Vigorous interpretation and I heard this piece hundreds of times by many top performers ...
This performance is fantastic.
He gets such stillness at times. A light touch and very sensitive playing. Wonderful technique for someone so young. Totally secure and superb control. I loved this performance!
Brandon Wallace you dont have to criticize ever one has their own opinion and way of playing their own music
Bravo To Mr. Lucas Jussen For His Brillant Superb Delightful Vigorous Performance with Light Tone that come from Heaven!!!! God Bless This Amazing Pianist!
einfach hervorragend -die himmlische Freude -op 20 minuten
samen met brendel en barenboim de top
Clear and bright like a diamond! I could see the design chart of this sonata for the first time.Jssen is great !
Such a gem of a heroic third movement in its main theme. To me it says Beethoven, despite his turmoil, was at bottom a man who trusted God to be there to help him cope and to gain great things (and be appreciated) in the end - and sometimes even before the end. My favorite part of this work.
I thoroughly enjoyed this delightful, vigorous, sensitive performance.
PRECIOUS! Thank you for sharing your immense gifts from God!
This performance is a force of nature ,like the beast himself...love this!
It's like I never heard it before. No pounding or bashing. Yet all the energy that is Beethoven comes singing through. What a huge undertaking, and the sense of life never ends. Wonderful.
The dynamic control and the touch is amaaazing.
Incredible Tempo. Feeling. Beethoven himself.
Wonderful, your interpretation of Beethoven is absolutely fantastic my dear Lucas, what a pleasure to see you and listen to your music, you are amazing. Thank you so much for sharing 💖
This a great performance of a masterpiece
A spot-on and idiomatic performance by a phenomenal talent. This performance joins the lofty ranks of those by such pianistic giants as Arrau, Ashkenazy, Backhaus, Brendel, Gulda, Horowitz, Kempff, Rubinstein, Schnabel and Serkin - with the excitement of Solomon.
Listen to the last movement. I can feel the electricity when he plays the allegro passages. May just be a bit fast, but I like the energy of the youth. And with that unruly hair, Lucas looks like the young Ludwig van.
20:25 _ 20:26 ... 20:27 ... PURE MAGIC . the most beautiful , deep , intense chaining - or , here chord progression too - i have ever heard .
This guy's dynamics show he understands Beethoven. Thanks, Lucas- not many like you.
You ' re FULLY TRUE .

The Epke Zonderland of Dutch Classical Music ;-)
Those fingers are amazing. Unusual and remarkable.
very long!
This is what my girlfriend told me.
I don't understand Beethoven's music, his music exhausts me .. but I do recognize that Lucas is a BRILLIAANNTTTTTT pianist , a true artist
?????????????????????????????????
@@lirica3209 Well, I'm a good example that people can change their opinion, ... because now I think JS Bach and Beethoven are the two greatest composers ever lived on this planet. I'm actually embarrassed I wrote that 4 years ago lol
My opinion about Lucas didn't change of course.
0:28 1st movement
11:58 2nd movement
15:47 3rd movement
I have watched this glorious performance three times now, and for the life of me I cannot see how there could be ANY thumbs down, let alone 180. Critics, go away and do something useful with your life! Quibble: the audience did not know concert protocol, and broke the mood by applauding loudly after the first movement; yet when the piece was finished they seemed to applaud only with reserve - disappointingly so. A few lusty shouts of Bravo were certainly in order! In any case, Lucas, it was pure, exciting Beethoven.
So beautiful. Brings tears to my ears!
Extremely impressive. I am most astonished by the codas of the first and third movements. Especially how he handles the glissandi in the third movement. So many pianists unfortunately completely misinterpret the glissando markings in the third movement. Perhaps because of there difficulty or because they think they know better than Beethoven. A wonderful job! Bravo
Superb sonority and perfect knowledge of the Beethoven style, super rendition!
This is much more like it, power and poise. I am sure that Beethoven would have approved, and the lad so young as well, well done young Lucas, you have a great future ahead of you.
From some angles his features rather favor LvB's countenance from the famous bust.
I really like this music and he plays it so great.
For me one of the best interpretation of the Waldstadion sonata I ever heard
Waldstein Sonata*
Beguiling piece from a truly gigantic genius of music.
Great pacing and sensitive phrasing make great music. For me, this performance has both. Bravo! Thank you for the chance to experience it on this video.
you think this is good, check out Schnabel. Like night and day.
People who criticise his finger work irritate me...it does not matter how he creates his music; it works for him...and works wonderfully well! (not to mention his age).....Horowitz´s finger work was strange as well....
How do you know what it limits? What authority do you have that gives you the right to predict with certainty what he can and can not do. Don't judge he qualifications by your pitiful limitations
Brandon Wallace They have both studied under Maria João Pires and other renowned pianists.
I don't know the finer points of piano technique... I'm just glad to see these difficult pieces played by someone with smaller fingers. Gives hope to us small-fingered folks. Small fingers are probably the reason his fingers are lifted so high. Small fingers have to contort to reach 3- and 4-note chords without hitting keys in between.
His fingers aren't small, his hands are just narrow, handspan depends mostly on how wide is your hand and how stretched are your fingers not on lenght of fingers. I think his hand span is big enough. The technique is quite weird, but whatever, it clearly works for him. Interesting performance.
Martin Říha yes you are right it is what the Russian people do it is basically like their culture thing.
¡Exquisitez interpretativa!
Bravo, Lucas. ¡Admirable!💐💐💐💐💐💐💐💐💐💐🎵🎼👏👏💖💖👏💖💖
Beethoven is not usually my favourite because people murder it by playing it robotically and losing all the feeling, but Lucas's performance shows wonderful verve and exuberance.
Superb !!!! I am speechless !!! 😃😃😃
His playing is truly impressive along with his interpretation. I don't know how he does it with his fifth fingers raised like that. It looks like he has so much tension in his hands.
Loved the way he played. Perfect
FANTASTIC! Love the passion
Pure magic.
I can't think of a better way to massage my brain and feel the Beethoven energy than listening to this well played Sonata by Lucas. Bravo to the Jussen phenomena.
This is unexpectedly wonderful. Perfect tempi. You can hear the details in the music and all the feeling is there. Very clear pedalisation. I just saw Igor Levit play this on TV and it was horrible. The first movement was so fast there was no sense of form, you couldn't hear chords properly, just a giant dash from beginning to the end. Is this a contest to see who can play the Waldstein the fastest? He is supposed to be a "great" Beethoven interpreter? I think not. I would take this performance of Lucas Jussen any day.
absolutely heavenly
A beautiful piece beautifully played.
Bravo, from a fellow pianist, superb first movement and I'm sticking around for the rest :)
I have heard this sonata played by many artists, under others the greats like Arrau, Barenboim, Brendel, Kempff, Novaes, etc. and frankly I don't find anything missing in this performance. Is it the genius of Beethoven that comes through with any pianist who has the technique and expressiveness to bring this piece to life? I like to watch the hands of Jussen playing and his expression in general. I don't know what more could the most Beethoven-stylish pianist bring out here.
But one thing I find amazing, which is the pettiness of the critics in this thread. Don't they have a life?
Lucas is very young here, and this is a very good performance- however NOTHING could keep Beethoven's genius from shining through, regardless!
I love his hair and his performance, of course. I am a beginner and anything and everything sounds good to me.
Concordo plenamente contigo..Arrau e Novaes. Este jovem promete muito, futuro iluminado.
@@rosegarden0988 Good for you! Keep on listening and enjoy. You are in for life!
My favourite performance of this piece. Thank you for uploading.
Andy Kogler: then you have never heard Schnabel.
Brilliant articulation and timing.
I'm agree, but I think Beethoven must have a Lot of Shade.
Mostly in first movement.
@@juanpablomazomesa5399 The piece is full of shade. 1/32ths in largo (looks harder than it is), 1/4ths in prestissimo (looks a lot easier than it is), left and right hand reversed roles, trills in the hand that plays the melody etc. My gf at school (who, unlike me, could play the Waldstein wonderfully) said she thinks Beethoven wanted to make sure nobody but him could play it at the time. ;)
such a perfect interpretation ! a REAL BEETHOVEN TEXTURE . as i see it . and BEETHOVEN DYNAMICS , ANYWAY . and RYTHM , SEQUENCIES , TONALITY ... from pianissimo to heavj accords ... such a BEETHOVEN KNOWLEDGE !
VERY GOOD , LUCAS ! YOU DID it GREATLY ! PERFECT MODALITIES , COLOURS , TONALITIES , PEDALS , STYLE . to BE REPEATED , SUCH a QUALITY !
... and they lived happily ever after. The Princess continued to pursue her charitable work, while Prince Charming went on to have a successful career as a concert pianist.
i saw it ... since the beginning , sir . same impression . and the most interesting Beethoven ' s sonata . as i see it . so changeable in colours . genious . and it is a great video , as the takes are over Your hands . most of the time . chapeau , lucas . go on .
What an amazing performance, his technique is precise and crisp, his ability to capture ones heart by drawing such lovely emotion through his playing is incredible, it’s obvious that he has a deep connection and love for music and the piano, he plays with feeling, that feeling is then released into the empty spaces surrounding his audience, so very beautifully played, every chord demanding attention and every note a seduction to the ear, drawing you in with each key played, unlocking a spectrum of emotion within the listener!!!
LUCAS JUSSEN IS SIMPLY BAD ASS🌟
LUCAS IS SUPER DOPE❣️🎼❣️
Awesome performance! Well done!
BRAVO BRAVO BRAVO
SO YOUNG AND SUCH TALENT, SUCH SENSITIVITY TO CAPTURE BEETHOVENS MULTI TEXTURED EMOTIONS
THANK YOU SO MUCH
Braaaaavoooooo......... phenomenal, beautiful.
Nicely done, Sir!! You and your brother are gifted and the world is a better place for it. You should be a shining example for other young people. Unfortunately Koreans think that boys who play Piano or organ are sissies. But other places are not so constrained. Do come back often. At least the audience appreciates your efforts even if some of the commentators here do not.
Grazie Lucas per la tua meravigliosa musica. Ti sento suonare in questi giorni così difficili, gennaio 2022.
FINALLY! A performance that does justice to this magnificent composition.
He is gorgeous, like an Angel.
I found this was a real cow of a thing to play as well as try to understand and interpret it when I was just a bit younger than Lucas here. I did not persist! Well done Lucas, thank you. Cathy
A superb performance of this piece that I know so well. HOWEVER I have suddenly realised, someone must of written the music. Whoever it was must have been a genius.
Beethoven was an absolute Geniusss
Ah! What a rendition: the madness of the most musical of souls ever! Hats off!
For all those who criticise, sit back, relax and enjoy.
sublime ... i didnt change ... same position ... as i it was 6 Years ago. I JUST LOVE this INTERPRETATION ... SUCH a TREASURE ...
and ' YOU DID it GREATLY ! PERFECT MODALITIES , COLOURS , TONALITIES , PEDALS , STYLE . to BE REPEATED , SUCH a QUALITY !
'
i repeat ...
and technique ... sir .
Perfect tempo. Bravo
My hands cramp up from just hearing this played!!
Zelden zo'n fijn notenbad gehad.
Thank you so much Lucas, that was absolutely sublime. I really really love ❤️ every single moment of this. Please stay safe and well too xxx Mags ❤❤❤
Bravo!!! Thank you for sharing.
Not the most technically-assured Waldstein I've heard but definitely one of the more musical ones. Refreshing.
Me encanta ! Bravo Lucas !!
ABSOLUTELY GREAT!!!

Het is echt geweldig, Lucas, bedankt!
