  • CANDLEMASS - AT THE GALLOWS END
With The Legendary Original Candlemass Vocalist.....
    JOHAN LANGQUIST (Epicus Doomicus Metallicus)
The Best Doom Metal Voice Ever! This Version Is Pure Perfection!
    Doomology 2010
LONG LIVE THE MASTERS OF DOOM...............................
Sunrise I greet you, the beauty of your light
so warm and tender was never the night
In tears I see you, the last time it will be
so give me your blessing, I'll meet my destiny
    No rest for the Sinner
    Hypnos refused me my sleep
This was the last night of my life
with wine I pondered on my deeds
I drank to the devil with servants
It's good with a friend where you go
No one would share my last chalice
So I drink to the ones that I know
    Ring brother, ring for me
Ring the bells of hope and faith
    Ring for my damnation
I am at the gallows end
With sad emotions, I sing this epitaph
my swansong, my headstone, the farewell of my heart
The hills of Tyburn, up where the gallows stand
only the vultures will come to see me hang
Behold the sight of my Golgatha
the gallows enlightened by the moon
proud of his art are the carpenter
his creation a tool for my doom
I am the outcast no winner
I am the fallen the one
that lived all his life as a sinner
The Tempter has called me his son
Soon it is time the dark has now fled
and I see the place for my death
the priest he will pray for my lost soul
I'm sure he's wasting his time
    A sinner, a fool or a devil
or just a victim of life
It's no fun to burn in hell's fire
but I sure have enjoyed my life
    Ring brother, ring for me
Ring the bells of hope and faith
    Ring for my damnation
I am at the gallows end
    EPIC DOOM PSYCHEDELIC METAL!!!

imagine how epic "Samarithan" and "Bewitched" would have sounded with Johan singing them

      @thesultanofswing8706 Před dnem

There's no human being who could sing Bewitched the same way that Messiah could. Bewitched is the song that made me a metal head.

I think these guys had the right idea in doing totally different versions with Johan and Messiah. Too many bands make the mistake of doing the song exactly the same way with a different vocalist and most of the time it doesn't work for that vocalist. These guys are brilliant!

It feels odd to hear this, because I'm so used to Messiah's version. But Johan's version grows on you, after a listen or two. He has a raw emotion to his voice that no other Candlemass singer has been able to match, even though Rob Lowe got close at times on Death Magic Doom. Johan is a sadly underused singer, and I hope you will join me in shouting MORE LÄNGQUIST FOR THE PEOPLE!

Johan is a great emotional singer and Epicus is trully an amazing album, but Messiah's performance in nightfall is flawless. The best metal singing performance I think... We love both Messiah and Johan anyway...
Now for this song, undoubtly Messiah's version is far better.

My view on the eternal question wether Johan or Messiah was the best singer in Candlemass is, if you emphasize the "metal" part in doom metal, it's clearly Messiah, and if you emphasize "doom", then it's Johan (just listen to Solitude!). Robert Lowe, I think, is a very close second to them. He was great, too, and I'm sorry he's gone.

Certainly Epicus Doomicus Metallicus is the best Doom Metal album ever, and Johann's voice (gloomy, dark, desperate) is much more suited to Doom Metal than Messiah's (strong, orchestral). This Johann attempt to cover At the Gallows End is a lot better than Messiah's attempt to cover Under the Oak. Messiah himself told no one could express emotion in Under the Oak like Johann did.

Sorry, but I can not agree with the many lines here for Lanqvist as THE singer of Candlemass. He's a great singer, no doubt, but Marcolin made the special Candlemass sound on the classic albums and his voice is very much doom in the way Candlemass played at those albums.

  • @TheEbonicslover
    @TheEbonicslover Před 13 lety

@MadStone666 first off all this is a raw recording in case you didn't notice. You must accept the fact that "Epicus..." is undoubtedly the best Doom Metal album in history. Naturally Marcolin should have more power in his lungs because he is a much larger man and he still one of the great singers but does not come close to Johan's voice and the feeling. I wish "Nightfall" was recorded with Johan.
