  • Metal detectors, police officers, handcuffs: is this an episode of Orange is the New Black, or an average day at a New York City public high school? Every year, New York students are pushed out of classrooms and into the criminal justice system via the School to Prison Pipeline. Learn about how the School to Prison Pipeline works, its destructive consequences for students, and how educators and communities can work together to fix it in the NYCLU's latest episode of Project Liberty.

As a Public School Educator, on behalf of many parents, children, and educators, I wish to deliver an immense THANK YOU to Executive Director Donna Lieberman, everyone in the New York Civil Liberties Union (NYCLU), and Vocal Students for facilitating the exposure and much needed public scrutiny of this significant portion of the rampant abuse of power and legal infractions that exist in our public schools, for enforcing the safety and best interest of our children, for being public role models of ethical and moral conduct, for upholding human and constitutional laws, and for your efforts in inspiring the public to believe that there is a light at the end of the tunnel and it is not necessarily an in-coming train. Best wishes always.
    Sincerely,
    Luis Angel Perez

Very informative video. Those failing schools are predominantly in low income communities of color which 75 percent of NY state prisoners come from. This is a tragic phenomenon that has endured for decades.

Very thought provoking video. I'm commenting on this video one day after it was posted, and sadly, I'm guessing if I were to revisit this page in a few months, the comments section will have filled with racist vitriol.

What brought Police to be so much a presence in those schools? Who made those decisions? Are the schools safe with or without Police/ Security? Those who do not like Police presence in school should probably ask those questions and more importantly ask if you feel safe sending your kids to those schools without Police. If the answer is yes then what happens when a violent act occurs? Yes, you guessed correctly "Call the Police" right? Right. Get used to having school Police/ Security or what have you in schools. If you do not approve then try to go to one of those schools and feel a sense of security...good luck.

Chad, do the research, schools are quote often the safest place to be in for many kids. The book Lockdown High provides a lot of details

but one can only say it helps with empirical evidence instead of merely assuming which isnt as strong.

Blame the freaking miscreants for some of things that we have to go through. If it wasn't for them, there wouldn't be metal detectors.

No part of this video addressed how mamas can give their kids some decent home training as part of the solution. All I heard throughout was victimhood.
