  • It's called the school to prison pipeline and it's a national trend where children are funneled out of public schools and into the juvenile and criminal justice systems.
Special thanks to Five Mualimm-ak, director of the Incarcerated Nation Campaign for co-producing this segment with us.

When I was a kid, kids just didn't get arrested. If you did something really bad, back then fighting, smoking pot, vandalism, and the cops picked you up, they took you home to mom and dad to deal with you. It is ridiculous that we are doing this to kids. We are setting them up to expect that this is their future. We are throwing them away. We have to change the system, kids are valuable.

Leaving them in the hands of incompetent parents that have no control over them does nothing to prevent the issue of thier behavior. Time to step up the concequences because slaps on the wrist aint working. The system doesn't need to change, parents need to do thier job and stop placing extra burdens on society to deal with.

Despina Belle-Isle. You're right they are been setup to fail. Also how in Gods name are any of the children ever going to trust the system when all the system ever did to them was hurt them in some way never mind the adults who will never be the same again because of a broken system which is put in place mostly by so called upper class citizens who do not have a clue what it is like grown up with every door close and the keys are keep for the chosen ones. They are then been told children of today are so lucky people have never had it better than kids today. When people are been lied too sooner or later the truth will come out. I hope it will be sooner rather than later for the well being of humanity

I've been reading the comments and it baffles me how people who live a privileged life can freely spout out the solution "act right and you won't go to prison" that way of thinking is why the system is the way it is. There is more that goes into life than just going to school and acting right. Children need patience, a listening ear, a loving and caring support system and not to worry about the stresses of life that priviledge people do not fathom thinking about. Before you judge, listen and perhaps visit the communities and learn more. If the solution is as easy as act right, then why is this a topic? It is real and because it did not impact your home, doesn't mean it isn't impactful elsewhere. Stop with the ignorance some of you display with your ignorant comments and try something like listening, getting involved and think about the children. Regardless of what America has shown you, black and brown people are not monolithic, there are things that impact our lives that others will never understand. Stress and anxiety can also hurt a child trying to learn. Where is the humanity?!

If you did the research and that proved that it doesnt happen then i understand and i m open to it..
Denying others experiences because of yours being totally different can be unintentionally cruel to other ppls issues.
For eg. In my place forget the talking back but schools wouldnt report kids even for sexual assault/violence they d just sweep it under the rug
So i m one of those ppl where i wished there were ppl that were counseled and if they didnt improve then they were sent to juvi/expelled or atleast kept seperate from victims for serious bullying/sexual assault casees.
But I dont think its untrue just because my experience is totally different from theirs.
And theres more than one documentary on this so is everyone lying? And if thy were what would they lie for and where is the proof, any one can call any thing a lie thats different from their experience

And i don't think to reply to the main comment about the point i am making which is "different ppl may have different experiences",i have to look deep into it, sure if i was saying that documentary is 100% true then i would have to but since i am not saying that and i am talking about different topic alongside it i wouldn't have to.
What i wanted to say is (if you reread and recomprehend without considering that i am talking about this documentary, and think instead as to me replying to the comment alone may be you ll c what i mean) that we cant just say whats true or false in others cases because our experiences are different from theirs...
We can only say what happened in our experiences, and at times two different opinions and experiences about one thing can be same. Even if two same opinions can make something a higher probability and stronger proof in which case even main comment can be right.
And seeing there are multiple videos on this topic one has to wonder if everyone is lying or not and if so why.and may be for whichever case you looked up you could absolutely be right and since i havent rewatched this video today and my comment was 1yo and i have forgotten the cases given but for my first previous point it doesn't clash with the point you are making anyway so both can be true.
Again i am making two different points though. One being different experiences, another being questioning the existence of multiple documentaries and biases etc too. N neither disagrees with yours.

There are state facilities that treat our children like they are in prison already. It is happening in these state run residential treatment facilities. The facilities that hold tight security can cover up their actions real good too. Upper management has proven themselves to be not accountable for assaults against these children. It is a nightmare for these children and adolescents; they are out of sight, therefore, out of mind. They do not leave my mind, for what I have seen is hell on Earth. Children need to be home receiving the appropriate services to help them adjust, or correct the system inside the schools so the children receive what they lack. Never give up on children, give them positive support!

I work the inner city. We have metal detectors, wands, backpack searches and a see-through backpack policy. Kids bring drugs and guns to campus all the time. We just had an arrest two weeks ago because a kid brought a gun and was let in through a side door by a friend. Another kid was arrested for beating the hell out of her Spanish teacher. I think it's kind of easy for people on the outside to look in and say "Oh, it shouldn't be this way." If we weren't so strict with our check-in and dress code policies, there would be at least one death a month on average at my school.

The culture has to change. It will not happen from the outside. Just listen to your local rap station. Half the words are bleeped, but the message of misogyny, being hard and banging hoes is preached over and over. Being "respected" is the only thing that matters. Kids in the hood do not get a chance at an innocent childhood. That is all stripped away by age 6. It is a culture that praises violence, immorality, and devalues education. Change the culture to one of joy, respect for life, respect for others and a desire to be a blessing in the world, and this whole paradigm will go away.

wrong, give them a pay minus the cost of staying in prison atleast so its not
All about oh let me get a kid to jail so theres more free labour.and idek if kids in prison should work cuz thats still child labour
And its not ok to treat a criminal with crime because that wont improve em,they should be allowed to study cuz they r not adults. Counseling as well.

You always hear about the crime rate going down while the incarceration rate goes up. Surely this is proof of bias, right? Wong. I think (as do many experts) that everyone is looking at it backwards . Maybe the crime rate is going down exactly because of the level of incarceration. People are in prison so they can’t commit crime. Therefore the crime rate goes down. Cause-and-effect. Why does no one gets this?

You cant stop a school shooter if his mind is truly set on going thru with it. You think chainlink fence is hard to cut?? Lmao and the new prison designs where the whole school is concrete. Yeah its called a grappling hook. I could climb ANYTHING with my arborist gear.
Thats why i think teachers should carry firearms.

I have a deep passion for researching and dismantling the school to prison pipeline. I have to chime in though on the discussion about charter and private schools - this is gross misinformation, and while I can understand the decision to use this rhetoric, it is not correct regarding public charter schools. Charters are NOT private schools - we are not making money off anyone.

Yes charter schools DO TAKE MONEY FROM OTHERS because they receive federal funding, EVEN THOUGH they are not held to the same federal standards and guidelines of public schools. When you have charter schools that take the funding, yet push out "at risk" or what they deem as "problem" students and force them out you are not benefitting the community that could use those resources for the public schools in the community, and essentially continuing the segregation that we fought so hard to dismantle beginning with Brown vs. Board.

let's see......our Ancestors were raped, murdered, pillaged, lynched, sold off from their families, etc. by the westerners.... and we are the dangerous people? hum? the more things change....the more things remain the same! we must take our power back, as a people. let us first start with the reflection looking back at you in the mirror...ask each day.....what can i change about the person looking back at me to live a more harmonious, balanced, truthful and righteous way of life? why am i here on earth at this present time? wait for the answers! as quiet as it is kept.....all you have is time. remember to love yourself, again. it is deep within you. all else (outside the self)... are illusions!!!

Do a better job of raising your children and instilling morality and values. No body really cares about the black plight, and those who do don’t actually do anything that helps. Get your game up black people, lest you be left by the wayside of the road of life.
