  • In this video I'll show you how to get an old double-hung window open again after it’s been painted and caulked shut for decades. It’s all about knowing where to cut the paint free and a couple simple pieces of molding to remove.

We have two very large sash windows in our bedroom. Need to do this from the outside. Don't think they have been opened for a good 40 years. Thank you for this

I remember windows like this in the house I grew up in, I recall if you moved them up or down fast you could hear the weights in the wall. LOL that was a few decades ago, thanks for the memories.

I want to thank you so much! I just moved into a new house 🏡 and its 85 degrees outside. I couldn’t feel the air conditioning because i couldn’t get the window down. I used a knife 🔪 and wd40. ✅

The upper sash was the one I'm most interested in. That's the one that is always stuck on every window.

excellent video. My window has a fuzzy lining where you are sticking the sash. What then. I am afraid i'll ruin the insulation.

I have a securely stuck upper sash and I'm not sure how to work it free. It's on the 2nd story of a tall house with a storm window, so cutting the paint on the outside is tricky. Any tips for cutting that area?

We're repainting all the trim in our home and want the interior of our windows to match. Do I need to take the windows apart to paint them?

No, but you’ll need to be extra careful to avoid painting them shut.

Is there ever a concern that the top window will simply crash down once it's free? Is there a way to mitigate that? Like...simply prop it up with something until you've got it free and can guide it down? I've got 2 big old original windows that I need to un-stick and re-hang the sashes on, and I'm wary of accidentally breaking the glass somehow.

Maybe this is no longer useful, but a few thoughts from my experience doing this at home. First, the paint is usually so thick that, even when you cut through it, you have to muscle the sash down. Second, I’ve found that most of the top stashes still have at least one cord still attached, in which case it won’t fall. You can check whether it’s in tact by opening to the weight pocket door and reach in and tug on the weights to see whether they’re attached. Have fun!
