      Yep. Hard wood is hard. And you're going to need to touch the edge up bare minimum afterwards. It's not difficult to pack a folding saw or even a hatchet.
      A Tramontina 12" machete (around $15) will outperform large chopping knives also, the geometry is simply better, and you can swing it easier.
      As far as battoning goes, just make a wedge with your knife and pound it in with a branch or rock. Sure it's a useful skill, and depending on the type of wood not always a bad idea.... But If you're actually in a situation where you're dependent on your knife, don't risk destroying it. Skills matter.

    Great review! It appears to be pretty solid and good overall. The handle for me may be of issue. I prefer back of a larger knife handle to flare progressively in greater diameter vs. this doing just the opposite. If running asymmetric at the back I'd rather it transition more conservatively. To me this is a handle design not well devised for the cold, wet, to freezing conditions. As for the bolts being a bit proud... maybe a cool little liner on both sides would be nice and give it a personalized look.

    The handle is the reason I've never purchased a KABAR Jarosz fixed blade to date. Looks so good performs not so good. In short the spine of the handle is shorter than the belly leading to hand position issues. The blades however I think are spot on for their task. This is designed as a camp knife - I'm not surprised that it's light and not a super chopper/splitter. Providing the handle works for you these are great value knives. Just not good enough to convince me to move away from my BK7 & BK16. Sharp blades all.

    I think this just might be the knife that I have been searching for years. I have been looking for 7-8 inch blade that is a jack of all. Something not to big or small, not to heavy, in that $100 area, and something that is also somewhat tactical. There are a few others that come close but haven’t fit all the requirements. They are ether to heavy, to expensive, or come with crappy sheaths. To me the sheath is equally as important as the knife, I hate when a decent knife comes with a horrible sheath. Decent knife, but quickly got tossed aside when I picked up an Esee and a few others. Handle scales and sheath are crap. I like the blade but for the chop force the weight is impractical. Decided to use that 1095 crovan steel and forge it into a larger blade. They really should have went with kydex on the sheath and something that isn't hard, cold, cheap plastic for the handle.
    The screw also extended too far on one side poking my fingers/palm, which of course had to be customized. That was out of the box.

    I own the BK-16, great little knife. But, when I took the handle scales off, the tang had been skeletonized. I.E. to reduce weight they had cut out some of the metal in the tang. So before you baton with a Beker or this Kabar, you might want to remove the handle scales to make sure its a "Full" tang. Nice looking knife though.

      I've run a BK7 & BK16 combo for many years hiking, camping and field work. At times I've pushed them real hard with no problems except some very minor blade damage (ie. easily fixed with stones & strop). KABAR's 1095 CroVan is really tried & tested and works hard. The weight reduction is needed to get the balance right. I don't baton too much with my BK16 (mostly kindling) - that's why I run the BK7 (or occasionally a BK9). Have a great day!

    The issue I have with KaBar and Becker knives is their terrible warranty. Which is why I got rid of all of mine. If you read it it basically says that if you use your knife for anything other than cutting paper the warranty is worthless. If you baton pry chop dig any harder use tasks your warranty is void. Spend the extra few bucks and get an ESEE you get a bulletproof warranty and a better heat treat! ESEE even warranties their sheaths! If you can swing it better yet get a Busse. I know there’s a lot of people that call Busse knives overrated overpriced etc. but I can tell you first hand INFI steel is amazing stuff! Some of the toughest steel you can get never rusts under normal circumstances and is easy to sharpen. Warrantied for life to whoever owns the knife as well. 3 Dog Knives out of Anchorage Alaska has a great warranty too. The only thing they don’t cover is if you try to cut metal let the knife stay exposed to 200 degree heat for an extended period and trying to cut stone. Other than that you’re covered. I have their Amuk in Elmax steel and their heat treat is awesome! Elmax can be chippy but they run theirs at around 58HRC so a little softer than most that use Elmax and it’s not chipped once! I’ve batoned with it some super hard seasoned oak chopped with it you name it and no chips. But you pay for it. My Amuk was $425.

      I’m in Aus and I have a Condor bushman Parang and a Condor terrasaur and those two combined came under $200. They do everything I need to do. To be honest even the parang is pretty useless chopping our hardwood but great for pine etc. Chopping wood with a knife should be avoided entirely unless you are in a survival situation.

      Any length blade is legal to carry here in Texas. No Tomahawks or trench knives either, other than that everything else is fair game. The only length limitation is on restricted property such as schools, churches, Govt. buildings, etc. Then you are limited to 5 1/2". The laws changed awhile back! Carry on Brother!

    • @rjflippo
      @rjflippo Před rokem +1

      @@onebadjack1313 true, but a blade less than 5 1/2” is legal to carry anywhere knives are permitted. Can’t take that 5 5/8” blade in one’s pocket into a bar. Limited legality is still a restrictive infringement of the 2nd Amendment.

Sold off my knife collection and went to practical tools and put the funds into good footwear and better clothing where it does more good.

    • @squidbad
      @squidbad Před rokem +1

      @@gideonstactical I have a few things to say. Firstly, I did see that. Secondly, I do not consider the two written words "sponsor link" placed at the end of your paid segment a declaration of sponsorship. You could have said aloud in any way that zoleo was a sponsor, but you didn't. You could have written so in a full english sentance, at the beginning of your ad. But you didn't. "Promo" doesn't mean they sponsored you. "Sponsor Link" is a nice clue, but it's inadequeate not only for the casual veiwer, but the people who are merely listening to your videos. You went out of your way to transition into advertising without telling the veiwer by slicing it into your discussion about chopping, starting the segway with "And" as if what you were about to say had anything to do with knives. You did not change frame, microphone, background music, pacing, tone of voice, or other visual or audio cues. And most annoying of all, the only point you have about the text "sponsor link" is AFTER all the shilling you did. Hardly upfront.
      The FTC has a guide for how to and how not to declare sponsorships called "Disclosures 101 For Social Media Influencers". Some excerpts:
      "Place it so it’s hard to miss."
      "The disclosure should be placed with the endorsement message itself."
      "Disclosures are likely to be missed if they appear only on an ABOUT ME or profile page, at the end of posts or videos, or anywhere that requires a person to click MORE.
      "
      "Viewers are more likely to notice disclosures made in both audio and video. Some viewers may watch without sound and others may not notice superimposed words.
      "
      TLDR; just say aloud when you are sponsored. It is easy, effective, and "upfront" as you say you are.
