Putters are arguably the most important club in the bag, but most of us still don't know if we should be playing a mallet or blade-style putter. In this video, we pit the two styles against each other to try and answer that question.
In MGS fashion, we're bringing in our data set of 23,000 putts to give you a breakdown of which putter performs best at 5 feet, 10 feet, and 20 feet.

DO YOU PLAY A MALLET OR BLADE? THE FIRST 500 COMMENTS ENTERED TO WIN A FREE PUTTER FITTING ⛳️
I play a Cleveland Frontline mallet with a Super Stroke grip.
Just feels good, and I sink more 4- and 5-footers than I did with a blade. But is it the best??
Odyssey 2-ball fang, and I love it!
I play Ping Ketsch. It's been in my bag since they were first issued.
Nike Method Concept Mallet (in red). No real reason why other than liking the looks of it a few years ago!
I've been playing an Odyssey WH #1 blade for over 10 years. Tried a mallet but it didn't feel right. Would love to see what a professional fitter would say.
I WAS just looking into this with a deep dive to order a new PLD Anser. Thanks for the video!
Great information this new series is outstanding. I have not purchased a club in the past 6 or 7 years without checking MGS.
Man great content! Subscribed!
Awesome input. Thanks
I was fit for my Newport 2 timeless 6 years ago and still absolutely love it. Hoping it stays my only putter for life.
Great stuff! A bit of a surprising head-to-head result to me.
Great test as usual. I like mallets and think the 5 foot mark is the most important for strokes gained, since the bogey golfers out there will two putt from 10 and 20 feet about 80-85% of the time, while making 50% of their 5 footers.
Same that is why I switched to a mallet putter, I was missing way too many short putts. It was also causing me to leave a lot of my longer putts a bit short because my only goal was not to leave a 4 to 6 foot putt that I was struggling with.
Love it!
Excellent video.
I've only just watched a few MGS videos today, but I see a solid trend. No matter the club or ball, go get fit!
Love the video and the honesty with how mygolfspy does business. I have landed in the opinion that toe hang, loft and lie angle overmatch mallet vs blade. I think it’s more about neck style as opposed to head shape. My testing doesn’t involve 23k putts but I do see the same specs (toe hang, loft, offset and lie) regardless of head shape influence start line and speed more than the style of putter.
I miss slant necks and heel shafted putters to the right and I miss plumbers necks to the left in both mallets and blades.
“Visual cues have no correlation with performance” …..5 min later….. “The triple track technology works”. What gives?
This is based on how our testers score a putter looks vs how they perform during our annual mallet and blade testing. We have been taking subjective data vs objective data for years.
@@mygolfspyvideos got it. Thanks
“Ugly putters perform just as good as beautiful putters”
Meaning it doesn't matter how cool it looks
WOW.....glad yall caught that too!
Great video!! At last count, I have over 30 putters in my garage, not counting the ones already sold this year. Interesting how we (I) always blame the putter for putting woes and thus are constantly searching for the “right one.” Best comment ever made by my wife: “If that putter isn’t working for you, what makes you think another one will? Why don’t you change the golfer instead of the putter?!” BOOM!! Got fitted and now am rocking my putter - no one/thing to blame but the “indian” shooting the arrow now!
Awesome video. Thanks! Do you guys have any data on grip weight? Seems to change feel a lot due to swing weight changes. Been trying out a few things including the gravity grip from Evnroll. My distance control is better with a heavy feeling putter but I do love the balanced feel of a counterbalanced putter like evnroll with gravity grip. Would love to see actual data on this.
Time to go get fitted for a new putter then. Thanks for the data, very interesting points. I continue to have to line putts up using the ball and focus very hard on contact, maybe having the correct putter will change that.
I'm using a classic Ping B60 and rolling the ball very well this year.
Good timing with your video since I’m in the market for a new putter. Any advice on what to expect a putter fitting to include?
Great video. I've been playing an Odyssey WH #1 blade for over 10 years. Tried a mallet but it didn't feel right. Would love to see what a professional fitter would say.
Using a Tour Edge OS10 center shafted mallet. Went back to a centered shaft after one round using my old bullseye and putting lights out. I used to have 10 putters. Sold all but 3. For me the center shaft seems to be more important than blade vs. mallet.
Scotty original Newport 2 blade. Love it.
Blade for now. Looking at trying a Mallet. Really just want one that fits my length and lie.
The aiming exercises that Edel does in their fittings, looks interesting.
I go back and forth between mallets and blades; I prefer blades for look and feel, but mallets (TM Spyder) remains a go to club when the blades go cold.
Currently playing a mallet. Always and I mean always trying new putters. Trying to find the magic one. Enjoyed this video. Really like getting the email notifications also. Great info with research behind it with this one as well as with all your videos. Thanks!
Do you know how to spot a good putter? Look at the bottom of his putter and see how worn out it is.
Great vid
Have used the same center shafted Odyssey for the last 15 years. Love it. Wish I could say the same about my driver. 😫😉
BRILLIANT video.
Tried a few putters as a kid. In my early teens I came across a heel shafted, blade putter that just fit me perfectly. It was a straight shaft too, not one of those with a weird kink where it meets the clubhead. I used it successfully for the next 20 years or so, got down to single figures handicap, played for my County, won a few comps etc etc, until I got bored/dissatisfied with the sport and stopped playing.
I now play a Mallet; Ping Tyne C, that I purchased at the end of last year. Before that I was Blade, an Odyssey. In between I did try the Pyramid, a Blade, but hated it and just recently donated it to my baby Brother. If I remember, I purchased a Mallet based on a MyGolfSpy article; I like it and probably would not change it no time soon although I wouldn't mind a fitting just for adjustment purposes. I went to one with a friend earlier this year in AZ; they only made a few adjustments but it definitely helped his putting this season...drats!
Brilliant, I am now wondering as to WHY I’ve never been fitted for a putter, am going to change that and first get some advice from my pro. It has been very frustrating these past few months with very dry few single putts, mainly two putts and the generous sprinkling of three putts! Thanks.
Bought a $500 mallet putter last fall. Played about 15 games with it plus practice. Couldn’t even get close to the hole. Got fed up this spring and bought the Kirkland putter from Costco. I have never putted so well. Absolutely love it. And I didn’t even have to buy the weights to modify it.
Been playing center shafted mallet for years! YES Natalie. Doesn't mean I'm a great putter unfortunately and should get fitted for sure!
Odyssey Model 7. May try one of my blades this weekend.
I run the Cobra Agera 3D Printed putter. It's very forgiving, feels good, looks good and I can putt with it well!
I just started using a Kirkland putter and it has improved my game. Was using an older odyssey blade putter and had many 3 putts. Now my 3 putts are less than 1 a round.
I switched to the Cobra Agera Armlock last year and wanted to try out an armlock method. Took some getting used to but really come to like it now. I'm curious how the Grandsport blade style would compare. Would love a little more depth into why the blade style seemed to consistently perform better at longer distance.
I switched from the Armlock blade (the Cobra highlighted in this video, in fact) to a traditional mallet. I brought my putting stick to the corral and spent about 90 minutes putting different putters through a test suite, starting with the stick to make sure I kept it in line, then various distances, including a 25+ foot lag putt. I found that a mallet with some moderate toe hang suited me best. At a round the next day, I gained 6.8 strokes compared to my old putter. For puts 25 feet and longer, I was actually gaining strokes compared to a scratch golfer... and I'm no where near a scratch golfer.
Sick video
Currently using a Carbon blade putter, but will practice with a Taylormade mallet when my stroke needs some adjustment
Got refit into my old Scotty blade with loft, lie and face angle adjusted. Puring putts now for the first time ever. Crazy.
Playing an Odyssey Duel Force 660 blade putter for many years. Funny to me how Adam talks about changing putters multiple times a year when I have had and only used this on for over 15 years. I make a whole lot of 5 footers with it. Had it bent to as flat as I could get it before the hosel world break. Love it, feels good and have had good success with it, but technology has passed it by. It would be hard to replace it, but would do it to improve my golf score.
I'm using a "not so popular putter" for years and I still like it. A Cleveland smart square... would be curious to be fitted to see how it does.
I like my Scotty flow back mallet, putt’s great and looks nice
I do play the PXG Bat Attack and I love it. I have also played the PXG One and Don putter and it is by far my 2nd favorite putter. Tried blades a couple years ago and just do better overall with my mallets. I did a putter fitting as you suggest and they continued to be the style putter for me.
Currently back to using my Odyssey Havok mallet.
Blade! Odyssey White Hot #3. Would love to try a fitting to see if something else suits me better.
I play a Yes Callie-fc. Tried a lot of others, but this is better than anything I've tried. Haven't tried an Evnroll. Need to try one, looks interesting.
I just had a putter fitting today. Always thought I was going to be using a mallet putter. Then went through the testing and since I’m right eye dominate, I ended up being a perfect fit for a blade. The testing blew my mind. Ended with the Odyssey Tri Hot and sunk 12 straight with the most consistent put path.
where did you get fit at? I am also right eye dominant and play a TM spider but been struggling lately
Are you left handed and right eye dominant? I’m curious how eye dominance plays a part in putting.
@@FloGrown47 I’m right handed and heavily right eye. It forces me to push a decent amount of putts.
Have a Scotty 2 Blade w/ Ping grip and all the weights. I seem to have lost my alignment at 5 feet. I have a counterweighted spider ghost 72 that I have been using almost as a training aid on my birdie ball putting mat in the basement. Getting a Spider EX to help me with alignment...literally ordered today to be here tomorrow. :)
Odyssey Stroke lab #7 mallet, love it!
I think the putter I use is best described as a D-back blade, it's a Lynx Predator P-04. There were a few different models to choose from when I bought my club set and I tested them on the small indoor area the shop had and noticed I tended to roll the face open on back swing and closed on forward swing with mallets but with blades the swing was straight and true every single time.
I'm using the 2018 and 19 Mygolfspy most wanted mallet putter winner, the Tommy Armour Impact #3 mallet putter. I don't know if it's the best putter for me, but I like the weight and feel of it.
I play a blade but it's a toe up Edel for stability as I try to putt straight down the line
I have been going through the motions trying to find my long term putter. I have tried a whole lot. Odyssey stroke lab seven, 2 ball ten, taylormade hydroblast spider X, scotty cameron phantom x7, Scotty cameron phantom x5.5, Toulon le mans, Pxg bat attack, and to what is now in the bag Evnroll ER2B. so far I have figured out... I really love a black putter because glare on a putter distracts me like crazy. The evnroll just feels CRAZY consistent to me. I have only played a few rounds with it yet I feel pretty deadly. It just goes the distance I try to putt it. Some rounds they are dropping some they are not. I think I am confident that the ER2B is a great happy place for me to be. I liked the PXG bat attack a lot but I feel like on short strokes I had a awful tendency to get stabby and push the ball off to the right (I am a lefty) I think the toe hang on the ER2B helps me a lot in regards to that. It's super tough as a lefty trying different putters as options are scarce so when I see something I really want to try and it's in stock... I almost have to buy it. Wish me luck.
Scotty Newport Studio 2 GSS insert. Been in my bag over 25 yrs
Thanks for the info brother, I play with a mallet putter and have been thinking of trying a blade, after watching this, will definitely check to get fitted, haven't updated my putter in ages(tbh, I think this is only my second putter in about 7years)
2 in 7 years?! Impressed.
@@mygolfspyvideos it's not because I'm putting great with the current one hahaha, wish it was the case 😂
I have just changed putter for the first time ever. I've played with a Nike Blade since I started and have recently switched to the Odyssey Versa 1W. It Still has the visuals of a blade but the weight of a mallet. I'm finding that it's allowing me use with weight of the putter with a more controlled stroke, backed up by my strokes gained, -1.1 to +1.9
Play a Odyssey Stroke Lab Double Wide F. Was fitted into it for my stroke type. Been in the bag for 2+ years. Very tempted by that ER2 to help on the mis hits though.
Love the video! I have found that an old Sam Snead "pay-off" putter works best for me. That's right...an ugly metal version of the rubber two-way putters you use at mini putt golf courses. 😂
Massive and beautiful putter collection. Streaky putter. Face balanced Ping Sigma 2 Valor currently. Battle yips on 30 plus footers when I have to swing harder. Scotty select squareback from 2018 is on deck because it looks prettier, but deep down i know it doesn’t putt as well!
Currently playing a mallet and have been for over ten years...the same one. Looking to improve with a new one.
I have both! Odyssey R-Ball mallet and a Mizuno M Craft Blade. Each has a different feel and look that almost feels refreshing after I start to struggle with one. Great video!
I have a ping sigma 2 tyne stealth. Fang style mid mallet like the pxg in your video. I got fitted for it. I do like it and do pretty good with it but still miss the feel of a blade putter.
Thx
I play an Evnroll blade. Question if we don’t have access to a high level fitter like you guys. What are your thoughts on putter fittings from places like Golf Galaxy and Club Champion?
The first!!!!
What I heard is the way to align to the target(hole) depends on eyes. If someone who is familiar with horizontal line feels comfortable with mallet and vertical line feels comfortable with blade.
The Cobra Grandsport 35 gives me the feel of a mallet but the look of a blade. Successful with the straight back and straight through swing I like playing with even though it has a plumbers neck.
Playing the Taylormade Spider Black Tour with my Taylormade set but the insert in the face was way too soft and feedback was mute. Ended up getting a Taylormade Spider FCG and the difference is night and day with the CoG in the front and the insert being the right amount of firmness. The FCG is a mallet putter with a blade putter feel.
I have been using a Bobby Grace F22 for 14 years. It is dear to me because a) I have never found a better putter and and b) it was fitting to me by Bobby Grace at his tour shop. No other putter has ever come close to the roll this putter puts on a ball
Blade putter. I did a putter fitting at Club Champion a few years ago.
Currently using an odyssey mallet, but contemplating trying the blade as I've been missing more from over 15 feet.
Do a fitting. You'll be greatly surprised on much it matters
Interesting to see blades score so well with all the mallet moi ads. It's hard to find a good putter-fiiting pro and with so many putter types to choose from it's difficult. Currently rolling Evnroll er2.
Odyssey 2 ball Triple Track mallet. Backup is an Evnrol ER2 mid blade.(for when the triple track is acting up!)
Also great video
Glad you enjoyed it!
I play mostly blades but i have a couple of mallets too. I like the old blades like acushnet and 8802 but I probably sink more puts with the newer putters.
I've played the same blade (Odyssey #9) for like 15 years. Only putter I've owned since I bought it.
Curious to see the results.
I like mid-mallets. I like the additional weight. I think it helps with consistency. Gives me more speed off the face too. I have a slower putting stroke. I also like the visual aids at address. All about confidence. I have never liked blades.
i’ve been using an odyssey white steel #1 all season, love it to death. once i got the right grip for me, i’ve been putting a lot better. i got it during the off-season at golf galaxy for 25 bucks. haven’t looked back
Ideally the “face balance” of the putter keeps the face of the club square to the putting stroke. If one uses a straight putting stroke a mallet that balances on a finger with face level (i.e., horizontal with equal mass in toe and heel) is the best choice. If one uses a curved inside-to-square putting stroke then an Anser style putter which will hang at 40-45° is a better match to the putting stroke. What happens if putter balance does not match stroke? The heel-toe balance will try to twist the putter in the hands when swinging back and forth, potentially opening and closing face adding a variable during the stroke.
Regarding inserts on the faces? Premium balls like ProV1 have a very hard layer of plastic under a very thin cover which doesn’t yield much when struck will low energy levels and will have a softer feel and different skid/roll characteristics off the face of a putter with a polymer insert.
A related variable is ball balance. The balance of a ball can be tested and marked by floating it in salt water (e.g. Epsom Salts). An unbalanced ball can deviate several inched in a ten foot putt. So if testing putters one should use balls which have been tested and proven to be in balance to eliminate that variable.
I am a blade player, but have been considering a switch to a mallet.
I play an Odyssey Double Wide Stroke Lab blade. I prefer a blade but like the heft the Double Wide gives me on the slower greens at my home course. In addition, I like a face-balanced putter, and face-balanced blades are hard to come by.
I have a scotty cameron futura x7m putter and thinking of changing to a select newport 2 notchback it's got the same neck and advice?
So this year I just recently switched putters for the 1st time this year, big help to my scorecard. Over the past few years however, I've switched and tried multiple putters. Blades and Mallets. Generally find better results for me with a mallet style. Would absolutely love to be fitted and see what comes of it. Went back to an old, old 2 ball odyssey I couldn't get rid of thinking I may need it again someday. That day has come.
The real question I'm wondering is, when will there be a Golf Trufit for putters from MGS ??????
My driver result was fantastic and could not be happier !
Good luck to all that are eligible.
I play an old corza ghost belly putter I've cut down to 36" or so. Been in the bag for ten years.
I play a Newport blade. I suck at putting but might as well look good 3 putting.
I guess different players need different putters to better suit their action. I found I liked the arm lock style of putter, mainly to take any wrist action out of my stroke. I tried a longer AL mallet and I was not too bad close in, but lag putts eluded me. Eventually I tried an Arc Master ( toe hang blae style/ long shaft) from Gravity Golf, which requires movement of your mass thorough the putting stroke. Strange as it may seem, it worked very well for me with all distances. I am only holiday at present and I brought the AL mallet with me. 3 putts are annoying!
I would always live to have a fitting to see if there is a better solution
i use a blade , it works for me , but i am surprised with this result . this is the one testing group i trust
What's the best way to get fit though? SAM putt-lab gives recommendations for what style to go towards but Trackman shows the raw data and consistency numbers. Does any place utilize both?
Odissey 7s. I'm scared of blades.. but I might have to try one again, after 25 years of mallets!
Crazy as it might seems -I have always found that you can shape a longer putt near to the hole with a blade than a mallet.
I have experimented and you need a wristy strike from a distance and a shoulder rock putter style rock as you get closer to the pin. Really close??
Then you stand more upright.
I don't do this - as you need to bring two putters and practice all three phases !
My Scotty Cameron Squareback is by far the best I've ever played. I didn't need your confirmation that blades were the best, but it's nice to see the testing prove me right. haha
Played a blade for years did ok now on to a mallet it seems to be getting better but it will take time.
Love my #ER2
Have been using an original Ping putter for 50 years got it 2nd hand in early 70's.
i played with mallets and sometimes I would putt with my lob wedge and sink it 8 ft out. So I bought the odyssey Versa 1w when it came out. Putted very good for couple of yrs. Then when I needed a straight putt. I would hit it off the heel and loose the speed or pull the putt. Now I have been putting with Odyssey EXO #7 and like I like it. The colors are fading and The speed of my course greens are fast and slow. I am either short or at hole or long. I always wanted the PING Stealth 2.0 Craz E mallet. SO, I bought one. Those 6ft putts are tuff because of the weight of that putter..
I have had the same putter(s) in my bag for more than 20 years, Scotty Cameron Squareback 2. I have 2 of them (1 in the states, 1 in the UK) and it would take something seismic to even consider a change.
I've just purchased a squareback 2 this week. Set out to get the Tri hot double wide but I couldn't get used to how soft its insert felt on testing. I didn't even know there was a squareback with a plumbers neck until I saw it in the shop during that visit. Played one round and love it so far. It came with a golf pride snsr grip which was way too spongy so I replaced it with a pro only grip today. Hopefully this will be staying in my bag for a long time!
Currently my Scottie is in time out. Went back to a very old Ping Doc putter.
andy panno been using white hot no. 2 center shafted since the eighties. have not found anything better.
I play the 2 ball mallet from odissey and i love it😛😛😛
