Who's had a putter fitting, what was the experience like?
I have made bad experiences with putter fittings. I got fitted for a mallet first and I was putting horrendous with it. Then they gave me a half-mallet, didn't work either. Maybe the fitter didn't know what he was doing. For me putting is 90% feel, so in the end the most important thing is that I have a putter that feels good. I'm pretty happy with my Odyssey Versa #1 putter I have been using for a few years now. When I miss a putt, I know it's not the putters fault anyway. For me it's hard to find the correct speed with a mallet or a half-mallet, which is the most important thing when putting, because let's be honest, most of us are no pros at green-reading.
I had a putter fitting done about 6 months ago. It was a old school fitting, more of measurements and scales and a swing meter put on my current putter. Based off my new lie angle(74), loft, and length. I custom ordered my new putter. Obviously practice is always necessary. My whole fitting experience was very insightful. My friends whom I golf with have seen more 1 putts from my game since my putter is fit correctly for me. Getting fit for a putter has changed my game for the better.
Wasn't fitted into a putter but I had my putter analyzed and optimized. They adjusted the lie and loft with a super slow mo camera.
We did basic putter fittings in college. Figuring out length, style, toe hang, face balance, etc. I prefer shorter, 33" putters, that are more mallet/face balanced. Also, Peter, we have yet to see you try out a Bettinardi. I have the Model 2 Kuchar Signature and love it. Best feel I've ever tried and I work with golf clubs for a living.
@@jameszaimes7407 Bettinardi rules! Studio Stock 7 here.
The older and cheaper the putter, the better. Gives me a bit more credibility when I blame 3(Or 4⊠Or 5âŠ..) putts on the club.
Not sure of your psychology towards putting đ
Facts
Yeah, whoever Scotty Cameron is, he won't retire in luxury on any of my pennies.
I just started golfing about a month ago and a friend gave me an old odyssey blade putter. Itâs a little short I think but I got that sucker regripped and went to work with it. Putting and chipping are the only things Iâm even half way good at right now
I picked up a Walmart special mallet putter because the set I started with had everything but. Still using it 15 years later. I'm currently looking at the PXG Spitfire as a replacement. I really want something with a heavier head and more perimeter weighting.
As an amateur, I've improved my driver swing, and bought a new driver, improved my iron swings and upgraded my irons. While I've vastly improved my putting (marking lines on the ball and standardizing my stroke), I haven't ever hit a putt and thought "my putter let me down just now." From a DIY golfer's perspective, technique > club change.
Have you tried different types of putters? How do you know which one suits you the best?
Did you ever think that with driver or irons?
This is just simply not true. I started playing 1 year ago with a Wilson beginners set. I had put a better grip on the blade putter of this set and refined my technique over time. Although I was not bad at putting, I got myself a complete new kit 2 weeks ago and also bought an Odyssey DFX #7 Mallet putter. Due to the shape, the balance and the soft inlay, my putting game increased dramatically, without changing my technique. The Mallet shape of this putter head, also fits much better to my straight putting swing than a blade.
@@FlowDesign82 The putter probably fit you and your stroke better. Putters are almost as bad as wedges when it comes to marketing claims. Drivers, fairway woods, and hybrids are the clubs that are going to be the most different when upgrading from a box set to more "premium" clubs. Irons are iffy since there are real differences when moving up from a box set but there are so few differences at the mid and top end lines that an amateur couldn't legitimately tell the difference. Most top-end drivers these days in performance across all brands but they represent the biggest jump.
Back on to the main point, wedges and putters are hardly different from each other at all price levels. I have no issue if someone wants to buy a beautiful set of MG3 wedges (seriously, they look great), but anyone who thinks that their $200 wedge can outperform the Kirkland Signature that are $50 a piece by a significant margin is full of shit. Same thing goes for putters. Sure, they're different and probably look and feel better, but most average golfers have garbage strokes. The main benefit most of them would see is if they just got a cheap mallet putter.
On another note, congratulations on the new kit!
@@DrProfSlugger Of course it all has to do with what fits best to your own technique / stroke. The Odyssey mallet suits me much better and immediately improved my putting. It was not that expensive by the way, but still âŹ140. Coming back to wedges, again, same story as the putter. I had a set of iron Skymax ICE IX-5 wedges (set of 52, 56 and 60 for âŹ120) with my Wilson box set. These were not bad, but the wedges that are included with my new PXG 2021 0211 DC IRONS set, are soooo much better. I'm hitting shots with the PXG wedges that are unbelievable. I never hit shots that good with the Skymax wedges. The PXG were at about âŹ75 per iron, so not that expensive still, but still almost twice the price of the Skymax. However, to me it was worth it and I'm really happy with them. Now that I'm thinking of it, I find the improvement between those wedges to be even much higher than when comparing the Wilson long irons to the PXG long irons. Although the Wilson long irons had graphite shafts and were to flimsy for my swing speed.
Recently purchased the putter I used in high school, Taylormade Nubbins M4. The nostalgia alone saves me a few putts a round
I just can't use anything but a PING Anser style putter. Basically grew up with it. As a kid, I used to tag along with my dad to the driving range. While he hit balls, I would grab his putter and use it on the mini putt course. His putter ended up in my bag as I was learning to play golf and was the only club to stay in the bag for 20+ years. About 4 years ago, I was looking for a new putter and tried everything. I really wanted to try out all the different styles, but everything felt off, so I ended up getting the PING Anser Sigma G.
A lot of putting is the confidence you have and sometimes that comes from the look.
I, like you, grew up on the Ping Answer and now I use a Newport 2 because it's just that same design.
Great video Pete and very informative. I look forward to seeing your putter fitting video.
Thanks so much for being part of creating a passion for golf! Love the content
Seven years ago i was desperate to find a new putter and headed off to a local golf shop here in Thailand where i was teaching English and struggling on the greens. Unfortunately i wasn't able to find what I was looking for but did find my future life partner who was the shop manager, happy days. PS I have since returned to the putter I found in a bargain bin in Australia more than 20 years ago, and it works fine. Cheers and thanks for all your excellent videos.
Watched quite a few putter videos and yours is so far the best by a mile. Very informative - thank you
Brilliant video. Never realised how much detail there is in different putters. Keep it up mate.
Make a video of your fitting! Would love to see the process and how you personally deal with that situation. People might be afraid to get fittings because they donât know what to expect or are insecure. You can help a lot of golfers by exposing the process along the way with your own CZcams personality style. Thanks
Looking forward to the fitting video to drop.
And let it be said that I was here before you hit a million subscribers! 500,000 is just a step on your way there. Thanks again Pete, this is by far my new favorite channel!
Hope the wrist is getting better sir.
My putter of choice sort of has a perimeter weighting, all of the toe hang you could ever have, and subsequently a very steep swing arc, and looks a little like you're about to hit the ball with a barge when you set up to it. However, the symmetrical and rectangular head makes aligning putts an entirely new and different game, and it checks off the biggest factor of my club choosing analysis. Yes, the Ping 1-A is the most fun putter in the world
This is great. I have been using a blade (Wilson staff 8802) and this made me realise that the shape of the putter is the reason I miss more puts left then right. I need a more balanced putter for my "straight" back-forward stroke.
We found you because of watching Rick Shields, but now you are really the only golf CZcamsr we consistently watch! Hey, my wife and I absolutely love your approach, and choice of content! Thanks for doing this one on putters, like so many others, I never thought about the number of strokes with the putter compared to the driver! I know you're not asking, but as a 19 handicapper, I have stumbled across the tour edge driver, and definitely love it! That led to their hybrid, and then a Tour edge Putter! If I were a pro like you, I might have settled on a different brand, but alas, I'm a 19! Hey, thanks for the work you do to bring us information and entertainment at the same time!!
Just ordered the cobra 3D armlock. Super pumped. Hopefully itâs a fit for me lol. Thanks Peter!
Putter fitting was my first and only fitting so far. I went for the hybrid shaft and really like it.
Having used a mallet putter for years; with occasional success, I've recently purchased a wide sole blade putter with a full toe hang. My putting stroke has an arc so hopefully this new putter will keep some of my miss hits going straight - with some practice of course.
Love your content Pete. I have stuck with my 1970âs Ping Anser and I love it. Having been covered all itâs life, itâs in pristine condition. It doesnât like uneven greens as it does not have a modern face insert.on good greens itâs amazing.
Biggest thing for me was selling my toe hand Scotty Cameron blade for the new oddesy face balanced mallet with the cherry red shaft, face balanced was the biggest difference and the mallet is much more forgiving for me, and my lines and stroke now add up in my head!
Defo try both face balanced and toe hang and see which one you prefer!
Also moving the ball from middle of stance to now off the front and holding my Finnish when I putt has helped me tremendously, if you finish in same spot every time and hold it does wonders
I was always bias toward the blade until I finally played a round with an old mallet. Just preferred the extra weight...felt like I didnât need as big of a backswing, especially on 40+ footers.
this is great, love it. Very to the point and helpful to me. i have been struggling and helps.
I use a mid-1980's-ish Northwestern Gary Player #804 putter (much like the second putter you showed). It has three alignment lines on two different heights to get alignment squared, and outer edge weights in the heel, and I still do fairly well with it.
This is very well explained. Top top video. Great info. Cheers Peter
Great talking on what I also think is by far the most important club in the bag. I also have never been fitted for a putter. Actually never been fitted for anything in my life. Iâve probably had at least 12 different putters the last 2 months that Iâve been trying out. Iâm down to 2, a Toulon Portland style and the newest Scotty Cameron square back 2. I really wish I would have just got fitted cuz Iâve wasted so much money messing around đ€·đ»ââïž. Great video Mate!!!! Hello from Texas
I use a Cameron California Del Mar. itâs been in the bag for over 7 years. Iâve tried others but nothing compares. No fitting, just trying the standard setup proved that it was what I needed. Iâll keep it in the bag unless I get a new Del Mar.
Congrsts to the two million! Well deserved!
I believe good putters (those who know how to read greens well and know how to start a ball on line at the right speed) can use almost any putter. Proper green reading and practice is much more important than the stick you use, in my humble opinion.
This is correct, long story shot when I was young and striping my driver and irons my putting was horrible and cost me. I made it a point in college to practice putting and one thing struck me hard, from jack nicklaus, âputting is an attitudeâ. I used to hit it to 6ft and be terrified to have to make the putt for the birdie I should make, and then missed. Now putting is by far my strong suit and I can have 20ft for par and I truly believe I am making it. Everytime I stand over over a putt within reason (35ft) I believe I am making it, and I make a lot of putts now.
I also got into collecting putters as I got into putting, I sold some but have like 25 now of varying expenses and shapes and I have a gamer, but when I practice I will bring 4 and you never know what one wins the practice day.
At the end of the day, putting is speed control, seeing the line, being able to start it how you see it, and of course, the attitude of a narcissist as the special ingredient. If you can do that and have a decent wedge game your putts per round will be in the 20s regularly.
Had a putter fitting - last club in the bag to be fitted (doh!). Enlightening process and ended up with a very different putter than the one I would have chosen without it.
i think along with the putter fitting a proper reading of ground contours on greens is a must needed skill.
Great advice again Pete!
Excellent advice as always, although itâs interesting that you have never been fitted for a putter yourself. If someone told me that they could lower my shot count rather than drive the ball further (normally further into the trees), Iâd take that.
Brilliant summary of putters and what we should be looking for.
Odyssey 2 Ball Ten has been working wonders for me. It has the White Hot insert too which is đđ
Great video lots of info Iam one of the guys thatâs either going to have a heal shafted blade or a slant neck blade currently rocking a Yes c-groove Tracy 2
Still a fresh video anytime - anywhere đ„
Thank you Friend!
I found the putter fitting to be super beneficial. The technology they use gives you a lot of data on your mechanics that you arenât aware of (ie strike and path). That alone made me a better putter and opened my eyes to different styles of putters. Cheers.
Back in the 90's I borrowed three different putters from the pro shop to try them out on the course. On the first hole I grabbed one of the putters and holed a 45 ft putt for birdie. On the second hole I grabbed one of the other putters and holed another 40 footer for birdie. I decided it didn't matter which putter I used, so I kept my old putter. Currently I'm using an Odyssey White Hot OG #1WS Golf Putter and I've had people thank me for the putting display I've put on during the round... I also have a Scotty Cameron Pro Platinum Laguna 2.5 at home, but I feel like the ball bounce off of the face when I'm using it, while the Odyssey putter has a much softer feel to it. I've never been fitted for a putter though, but I might consider it in the future if I loose all confidence in my current putter.
New ping sigma 2 adjustable is a nice intersection for everyone messing with their ideal length that suits them
When I bought my latest set of clubs (2016-17 Lynx Predators) I had a few putters to choose from with different head designs, I just stepped onto the indoor test green (carpet) and had a swing. First thing I was looking for was head twisting during the swing (got rid of two straight away because they dragged the head round), the next was the control of the swing and I found I hated the large mallet putter as it felt like I had less control over the pressure I applied and it hit "heavy". I ended up choosing a Lynx Predator P-04 blade putter as it just felt right (doesn't mean I'll get the ball in the hole ever time but it will give me a fighting chance).
3:35 I think your animation has it the wrong way around. Hit with the toe and the heel twists forward, just like you demonstrate right after.
I literally did a đ€ when the animation popped up the first time. Was so confused.
I agree! caught this immediately. Shame they put the effort into making a backwards animation lol
I thought I was stupid and didn't understand something there, glad to hear it's not just me!
Pete... You know who you need to see for that putter fitting.
Now how the hell do I tag TXG here?
Could you do a video on how much putter technology has changed over the years? Currently using a Slotline High Moment putter and I am curious if its worth upgrading to something newer.
Great video! Iâm a recreational golfer, only playing 8-10 times a year at best. Switched from a blade to a mallet putter for more forgiveness.
Just got a used Odyssey White Hot Rossi XG. Love it, just wish it would fix the rest of my game!
I've got the original oddysey white hot 2 ball which apparently I've had for 20+ years now. Same grip but it works fine and I want to keep it original. Tempted to change but it's got a special place in my heart
Great video! I'm with you, next putter WILL be custom fitted. đ
Love my spider tour black. No line, just like DJ. I make too many adjustments over the putt to line a ball up haha
Genuinely was quite a streaky putter..bought and used many Scotty/Odyssey/TM options...could never get away from pretty good or really hopeless one day to the next...until getting a 36 inch long Evnroll ER2 from Andy Gorman. Now as the old expression goes; "I now only have good days and great days". So maybe revisit one of your videos from a couple of years back and go have a few hours down there..as I firmly believe length of putter and natural posture override all head design/face balance/toe hang/alignment aids/special grips/upcharge shafts 'marketing'.
Nice topic Peter. How about a comparison video on new vs vintage putters?
Iâve just started playing golf in the past couple months, my last game I was up to putt for Birdie several times, and I quickly realized putting is my weakest point
Honestly Peter, I totally agree, but for example here in the South of Spain, I have looked several times and so far have been unable to find anyone doing putter fitting in a 200km radius. Yet, pretty much all local clubs do fittings for woods and irons. It's a shame because the industry tends to forget about the most important aspect of the game, and there are no experts in putting, neither when it comes to teaching nor fitting.
So I have been practicing with a mallet a lot then went to my blade on the course and one putted 7 greens. I think the mallet practice fixed my alignment and gave my blade confidence
Pete love the ready brek glow near the end. I had a putter fitting using the Edel system and it recommended a 35 inch mallet head putter but I felt really uncomfortable with that swing position and, at that point, had never heard of Edel putters and would have liked to try other makes, on the day, which was not available. My advice would go to a Fitter who doesn't use one makes system then practice the hell out of your new one.
Hope your back and wrists are healing mateđ„°đ„°
I have had the Odyssey white hot 2 ball centre shaft that Iâve just upgraded to the Pistol Grip wouldnât change it for anything đđ
I recently bought a Callaway 11 putter with a centershaft. Before that I was actually using a center shaft, Wilson blade, so I hope the mallet will do good things for me.
Exactly what i need right now !!!!
The putting green is the only place on the golf course I feel truly comfortable.
I use a MacGregor Balata Face BP312" $2 op shop find.
It feels amazing when it strikes the ball and suits my Bobby Locke style of putting.
It may be old but it's reliable.
Thanks for vĂdeo and wondering how are you recovering Pete?
I like the White Hot OG #7 putter. It is a bit heavier (might get weights to make it heavier), looks good and feels good when I hit the ball. Or maybe it's just the first putter I've ever bought, idk I've tried blades and didn't like them
Pete - can't you please do a video explanation of the grain on the greens like you experienced during the PGA at Bowood?
My putting is brilliant, lucky, or sometimes awful, after reading Bob Rotella putting out of your mind, I have come to an understanding that your confidence and trust in your eyes /brain to read and execute the putt is key. Well worth a read.
using a donnay blade putter from about 30 years ago. got for ÂŁ3 in charity shop. i found my putting is much better after i had a lesson my coach said no need to change putter
Pete-
You are so fun. Thank you.
I will have a putter fitting in the next few days⊠today I tried a two ball ten armlock and I have to admit I liked very very much⊠Pete a question for you how to determine the length of the armlock?
I had a putter fitting today and it was really really good
Would love to see a putter fitting video. Make it happen Peter! đđđ»
Iâd like to see a video of you putter fitting! Iâm hoping to finally get fitted for something in the near future and it would be great to see what happens
Great video Peterđ
Hello everyone from France. I play a Scotty Cameron newport 2 oil can since 2000, my putting is not really good (handicap 13) but i love my putter. I never thought to change it but perhaps......
Thank you for all these vidéos.
Enjoying my LAB fully fitted. I am short makes all the difference have right shaft length
Iâve had a yes! sophia that cost me 7eur for at least 6-7 years now. Iâm sure that putter fits literally no one (bar Phil maybe) but itâs pretty cool, it was cheap and I can shoot high 70s/low 80s with it so no point going crazy about the 2-3 shots I could be saving if I dove on the rabbit hole of fittings. PS- this is also true for the rest of my clubs. The only thing theyâve got going for them at this point is that theyâve become very predictable đđ»
Get down to TXG in Toronto, Iâd love to see how your fitting goes
my guess is that he will. but they are kinda in locked down cause that thingy corona
Taylormade Rossa Monte carlo with a center shaft. Love the feel. Might show how poor I am but it is the most expensive club in my bag.
If I would have gotten fitted then I wouldn't have bought 5 putters this year...thanks for the tip! :P
Digging your drone shots btw.
7:05 was that a subtle dig at Rick changing putters again?! đ
I'm in the market for a new putter at present and it's a minefield. So many to choose from
You should link in your lockdown putter lessons. They were equally very informative.
I love this!
Maybe I'm a odd ball, but I like to use 2 different putters when playing. I use a mallet-style for medium to very long distance hits and a blade style for up close.
I bought the Odyssey Triple Track mallet this year and love it. I replaced the Odyssey jumbo grip with a Super Stroke midsize. I also love my Odyssey White Steel #1 blade putter. They were great unfitted. Great video as usual Pete.
Oy Peter! Love the sole of your Scotty Cameron Newport! Is that custom etching or something? I have a Titleist Scotty, but mine has newport 2 and the weights on each side. I use on fast greens and TM OS DAYTONA for every round elsewhere
Went a from an ancient anser 2 to a scotty cameron Newport about 6 years ago. Still love that anser though
Am going for putter fitting on weds always used 2 ball with soft insert with mallet for confidence stroke big arc straight through so should I be using more blade type fancy firmer face for ping sound off face
The only club in the bag you actually score with: the putter (and maybe an occasional hole-out with a wedge). Only hackers think the driver is the most important club in the bag. Great video! Loving your content (especially all the hilarious stuff you do with Rick Shiels).
The best putting that Iâve seen from you in the videos was with your LAB face balanced horse shoe. Itâs uglier than sin but you were putting very well with it.
Loved the oath - Amen đ
I still believe that no matter what putter you buy,as long as you are comfortable with it,it'll boost confidence and henceforth lead to holing more putts. I do think that shaft length and weighting will come into play for the comfort level, but does that fall into the category of "fitting" per say?
Agreed.
I like the vintage ping putters, lightweight and good feel
Great vlog Pete - awaiting my fitted SCOTTY in Sept - i know!!!đđȘđđ
I putt with an old Acushnet Bulls Eye putter. It has a brass head, and the sweet spot is right where the shaft intersects the head. It is the sweetest feeling putter I've ever used, and I've made more putts with it than any other putter I own. The best thing? I paid $10 for it on eBay. Don't write off old school putters, they might be just what you need.
I tried a mallet for many years and never was more shakey or mishit more putts. Had less to do with the actual tech but more to do with my eye hates it. Even when I know it's more forgiving, it was mostly in my head.
Waited a while, saved up and got a Newport2 (played in HS with a Ping Anser) and bam, confidence back. Still mishit but much less and making many more.
Excellent video, giving straight honest advice for the most important part of the game
Any insight on centre-shafted putters?
Happy Gilmore putter sighting!!! :) made my day
Love the oath at the endđđđ
I use a scotty Cameron detour putter, never had a 3 putt. Scottys on fire đ„đ„
What a wonderful intro shot!
Putter is the most important club in the bag. My long game and iron stroking is fine, my short game and putting need work. I hit a 90 with 45 putts last year and had to change, got myself a odyssey double wide triple track and had my first ever round with no 3+ putts last week.
The aim is to get a round with 30 or less putts and stay consistently under 35 putts per round đđœ
An excellent and valuable lesson. Now I have a better understanding of what putter I should look for as a total beginner! (five lessons in) Thank you Maestro! (If you need any video lessons on playing keyboards, let me know!)
