- Russillo is joined by Anthony Slater, who covers the Golden State Warriors for The Athletic, to talk about why Klay Thompson decided to not return to Golden State, how the player’s relationship with the team deteriorated, and what the future of Golden State can look like as the Warriors try to maximize what’s left of Steph Curry’s prime.
(NOTE: This interview was recorded before news of Klay Thompson signing with the Dallas Mavericks became public)

Imagine how it felt to work so hard to get back and watch Draymon act a fool and still get his $$
imagine getting paid a max and not playing 2,5 half years and the other 2,5 years playing like a minimum player and still thinking you deserve more money 😀
Happy for Klay deciding to join the Mavs and rejecting the Lakers. Klay will be fine next season and he will definitely make the Dallas team so much better.
Lets be honest, Draymond destroyed the Warriors. And they rewarded him for it with a fat contract, I'd leave too
Draymond is number 1, but Klay and Wiggins falling off while being paid the max didn't help.
@@shorewall dont' forget poole. What a disaster class by warriors management. Paying poole and wiggins the max and not paying klay is insane
I wonder how much Steph had to do with these contracts? You’d think he would have to at least be informed and listened to about making those deals. If he agreed, I think it makes him partially liable for the mistakes. Steph is a one in a billion talent, and appears to be an amazing human being
Underrated comment.
This guy sounds so much like nephew Kyle it was messing with my head. Since when does neph care about the nba at all and how did he get so plugged into golden state.
I thought the same.
I'm just a bit sad they decided to pay obnoxious Draymond but decided to go cheap on Klay....
I hate Draymond, but he can still play basketball.
That's not what happened
they actually were gonna pay him. not the money he wanted but the deciding factor was coming off the bench. I dont blame him for telling GS to kick rocks. Come off the bench for guys that arent cornerstone or transcendent players? It would be different if Bob Myers actually was decent at drafting and took Lamelo Ball or Tyrese Haliburton or Maxey....You want klay to come off the bench for Moses Moody or Brandon Podzemski? LMFAO gtfoh
Klay made close to 70 million when he WASN'T playing due to multiple injuries and this past year he was mid
Tobias Harris was worse than mid and got 22 a year. He took 16 a year the money clearly wasn't the issue.
@@gabriel-uc1uz Klay is a bench guy now.
@@shorewall Still better than alot of starters.
yes klay made close to 70 mil when he wasn't playing, because he got injured while playing for the warriors in the finals, and his contract was fully guaranteed, like the vast majority of contracts in the nba. How is that his fault exactly? And sure this past year he was mid, but the warriors gonna be mid without him anyway lmao. Their ownership aint trying to pay luxury tax. They made no real moves, and they won't make any real moves. And who knows steph himself might be mid next season too with all that running and long range bombing he's been doing for the last 15 years. His decline has begun but the warriors are blind thinking he can still carry a mid squad to the playoffs.
Warriors also won 4 titles. They don’t do that without Klay Thompson.
This is really great for both the Warriors and for Klay, and it is super great for the Mavericks. The Warriors now get a chance to get a super young star player like Markkanen to combine with Steph Curry, Kuminga, Trayce JD, Kyle Anderson, Hield, DeAnthony Melton, Moody, GP2, and Draymond.
It all started when the Warriors eagerly paid everyone on the team but hesitated to pay Klay. I guess his feelings just got hurt.
They gave Poole a bag, also gave Dray his $$$ despite the increasing antics. But it’s also clear money wasn’t the only issue because the 2yr/$48m the Warriors offered is more money per year than the 3yr/$50m Klay is getting with Dallas, even when you account for Texas not having state taxes.
Klay got paid the last 4 years
@@JRMason-ri4ii True but this was explained pretty well by Bill in his podcast with Wildes. You're more likely to be offended by an offer when you've built up equity at a place. You're more likely to take that same deal with another place that isn't emotionally tied to you or that you have done nothing for. It's very true outside of sports too. If I were to ask my boss for a raise and he offered basically the same as another place, I may just leave because a place that doesn't even know me is willing to give me the same deal.
I'm not saying it's right, but it's just human to be like that.
Warriors still paid him even after tearing his ACL and missing time.
Unfortunately I doubt this iteration of the Warriors is winning a chip anymore. Curry and Draymond will retire that way. With that being said, Warriors should've handled Klay better, if for no other reason, to keep him as a Warrior to retire and save face.
Some of y’all act like the Warriors were paying Klay $7.35/hour.
He’s been on the decline for a while and was still paid big dollars.
If y’all wanna set up a GoFundMe for him, after he’s made over $250,000,000, then have at it.
Klay was paid well when he was hurt and rehabbing for a couple of years. When he came back he was clearly not the same player. To think the Warriors was going to give him the $35 million a year he allegedly requested lacked self awareness
I mean he took 16 a year so I don't think it's really about the money, seems personal
@@HookedonChronics He made it personal. If I was on that team, I would have hated having to deal with his ego compared to his ability.
@@shorewall fair enough, just saying it wasn't a money thing, he seems like he wanna prove something beyond that. Them giving Dray and Poole big contracts prolly made him feel a certain way. He a sensitive dude.
@@shorewall nah warriors made it personal by paying dudes like poole and wiggins before klay lol what a fkin joke
this is bullshit... klay was great in championship season... he was also very good in the first half of 22/23,this false narrative has to stop
I think he cares more about winning a title than revenge, the Lakers are a circus
I guess his feelings just got hurt.
😂
The problem is Klay still thinks he is 2017 Klay.
Says no one except folks like you and people on social media
and even then he was never worth a max
The problem is your mind is still in 2017 and think that him wanting 20M a year is an overpay when its not. New TV deal and rising salary cap. 20M will be the MLE within 2 years....get a clue
How late is this podcast?
Can someone clarify with me that warriors had a choice between wiseman and Anthony Edwards and they ended up picking wiseman because they needed a big?
I think because it was both clippers and warriors lost the free agency because they both aprons teams they could have traded Paul George to klay and draft picks or young players would be a better fit for both team because clippers would give klay 3 yr for 60 to 80 million and the warriors could give Paul George for 4 years max and he could be closer to his family
Why put out this video when Klay has already signed with the Mavs.
Maybe a late upload?
I don't see Curry on another team, but I wonder if he won't just retire if next year isn't competitive. Here's hoping he won't.
Klay already got paid after his devastating injuries. You don’t get two legacy contracts.
How did the KCP thing come apart though?
Klay leaving shouldn't be surprising to anyone who follows the NBA. Its not hard to connect the dots
What I don't get is KCP leaving Denver. I'm supposed to believe a guy who has made $170m just _really_ needed that extra $5m? There has to be more.
He has 2
Rings already so he is maximizing his pay. The nuggets didn’t want to go over the second apron. It’s that simple
@@Shortballa11 What kind of psycho would leave a job they love and pull their kids out of school, move their family (to Florida of all places) for a 10% raise?
That doesn't even make sense. The offer had to be like $64 over 4 years. If it's close why wouldn't you just stay?
For PG it was $50+ million guaranteed. I get that. But a couple million when you've made that much? What are you buying with $175m that you can't with $170m?
@@michaelahurtIt's not like Orlando sucks. They're a good team. Denver has always been cheap.
@@michaelahurt it’s more than a 10% raise cuz Florida has no state tax. And it’s the kinda Psycho that cares a lot about retirement. He not making 100mil. Every mil matters. It’s very simple. Ppl have left for less
@@Shortballa11 He literally has made over $100 million
I watched the games. Ws management watched the games. Bringing back Klay without improving other parts of the team would doom the team. Klay will likely help the Mavs, but he wasn't going to be a difference maker on the Ws anymore.
Funny that they talked so much about how the Traded Player Exception is worthless and the Warriors got Kyle Anderson and likely Buddy Hield with the trade exception 😁
Why did they upload this, very late. Lazy
If Bob was atill the GM Klay would still ge with the warriors. New FO doesn't show love to the players like Bob did.
Neither LA teams or warriors can compete for a title. All those teams need to blow the rosters up and rebuild unfortunately.
Cali state championship ain't what it used to be
I mean they couldn't trade with both teams
You know…the, you know, warriors, you know, aren’t going to be, you know, competing for, you know, championships, you know, anytime soon
I appreciate the contribution Klay has made to basketball (& I'm sure the fans of the team do as well) But he was getting paid a lot to do very little & considering the injury history, even if the Warriors prioritized other players over him, I don't know if I can be that offended if I'm him considering how good that direct deposit must feel. Also, I know taxes in Texas are different but phew, wait until he sees that property tax.
Klay went 0-10 stop it
These two guys making it sound more dramatic than it probably was. If klay wanted to be dramatic he would have went to the lakers.
The Mavs may get one “fuck you I’m still him!!!” type season from Klay, but they aren’t winning a chip off his addition. .
They could, they improved this off-season and have a more experienced roster, an actual camp with PJ and Gafford, an improving Lively, and hopefully a healthier Luka. Just hope Boston don't make it out the East really, they can beat everyone else
You don't know wtf can happen....mfs always talking out they ass ...
@@coreyhiggins6890 I know the Mavs won’t win a title
Idk man, when Klay gets hot, there’s nothing you can do to stop him. Him and Steph are the only two guys I know that can seriously go nuclear for a quarter and win you a game. Klay may not move like he used to, but he’s still an elite shooter.
@@THE_BEAR_JEWfacts
Klay is a big ass baby. One down now all they need to do is get rid of dumbmond green. Then they can retool and compete again.
Klay is the only great shooter that forgot how to shoot 🙄
imagine beeing a 3 and d player and getting paid a max - and then imagine you dont play 2 years of that and the rest playing like a minimum and still you want more money - 😀
Antony slater says nothing...just couches every opinion
Klay took a worse deal than what was offered last year. Pride a mother fam.
Obviously not about $. He just wants to contribute to a contender and as much as I dislike Dallas he made the right choice
Never seen people talk so long about a team that did not get a guy they realistically did not have a chance to get imo. Stop talking warriors. Until they get a guy.
He took 4 less shots and averaged 2 less points last year. The warriors fucked up.
