I actually studied electronics technology in VoTech and Trade School, but was out of the industry for the past 20 years, this was a great refresher course for me. It all came back to me, thanks for posting. 👍👍
This video has given me more information and explanation than 6 hours on google and other youtube videos. I bought a set of relays from Amazon that did not state they were 5 pins so I've been trying to see if there's any way to avoid a return and use them as an SPST. Thank you for the video, it has helped tremendously.
of course there are other uses for the 5 pin but this is a beginner video.. i will UPLOAD a video on other uses for the 5 pin when i get back in the garage.. THANKS for watching..
Love love your wiring vids!!! Thanks man ! I have some fans I need to wire I just came across the 4 pin relay definitely seems a lot easier .. Looking forward to your upcoming vids!
One thing I would like to see on your video is to advise viewers to mount this relays with the mounting tab on top. Most imported relays are not water tight and can short out of fail with ease if mounted in any other direction. Great video and excellent explanation. 👍
Love your video man very well explained thanks a lot for doing this a lot of people doesn't understand how to do I really appreciate that my friend I have to watch that a couple of times before I understand
Good video. I usually use 5 pins even though I know I don’t need to. I honestly barely can find a decent 4 pin from a reputable brand. It never hurts to have the 5th pin so I just use them 99% of the time. Actually just did a project using the rare 87A. I have a daytime running light on my truck that is powered by an ignition circuit. Interrupted it with a 5 pin relay triggered by the parking brake ground. Parking brake to 85, ign to 86, ign to 87A, 30 to DRL. pull brake, DRL shuts off when the relay switches to 87. Works like a champ.
Such a great vid... I was listening to a new mixed tape and didn't want to listen but watched your vid accompanied by Mary. Jammed out and learned the wiring set ups with cool-ease. your diagrams... Best Regards!
Hi Chris - I learned a lot about relays from your videos. I have a 5 pin starter relay on my 2005 Volvo v50. It won't start and I want to try to a repair I'd seen on a forum where the mechanic grounded the relay to the strut tower of the car. I just want to confirm that to try this repair of grounding the relay I would ground from the #85 pin of the relay to the grounding point (nut on strut tower). Thanks, Tom
@chris craft thanks so much for this video. Such a clear understanding of what could be confusing topic. Now I can wire up my external horn switch. Thanks again.
When I want a short sleeve shirt, I buy TWO short sleeve shirts. I put the first one on and tear it off like Hulkamania Running Wild. Then I put the second one on. Good vid!! Very well done. Stay gold.
Exactly to the point lots of youtube videos have the 5 pin bought a 4 for a horn setup but other videos made me lose my nerve and you reassured me that I had it right :)
Great video man, seriously. The drawings make is all click for us visual learners. I don't need or want over the top graphics or background music, just the facts. Thank you, thank you for helping me learn something.
Holly crapper! You made the relay go from a shell game to idiot proof in my minds-eye! Thanks so much for demystifying the relay and how to hook it up.
I’ve watched about 100 videos on relays. After watching both this one and the fist one you did on the 4 pin where you turn on the a/c i do not need to watch another. Thanks!
I watch both ur videos for my son mustang fans his high speed wouldn't work and videos and knowledge help alot keep up the videos bro and show tht chevelle when u done!!!!
I'm trying to power a two speed stock ford fan watching this I believe I can just use a five pin relay. I enjoy this style of seeing this drawn out being an artist it works with my brain.
I’m doing a 4 high conversion on my truck and bought a 5 pin relay instead of a 4 pin, and all I need to do is tap into the wires, would I be able to hook 86 and 87 to my high beam wire and still get the same effect as a 4 pin
Question trying to wire a old car antenna up to a 12v 110 power supply with a timer for a chicken coop door the antenna has 2 power wires for open and close one is constant and the green breaks to close antenna would i need a relay to achieve this or could i just run my timer and constant antenna jumped from 12v source and use the timer as a break for my green on the antenna and ideas for simplicity or am I on the right track
Chris Craft wanted to see if you can help. I have Polaris Ranger with cab heater that has quit working. I used a test light to determine the relay needed to be replaced. I put on new relay checked positive with test light and it works but when I check the wire (87) going to the heater control panel there isn’t any power. Any ideas? Thanks in advance fo any help.
I want to create a car alarm like in your previous video. How do I use either of these (4pin or 5pin) to have the parking lights on disarming the horn when starting my car...?
You can use a 5 pin relay to over ride a thermostatically controlled fan with a toggle switch as well. I'm sure there are other similar uses, just can't think of any at the moment, but definitely not in place of a 4 pin.
Very impressed video and nicely explained.Thanks.I am trying to connect a second passenger electric window switch on the drivers side as there isnt one .In my case ,can I use the 5 pin relay to use 87 and 87a for up /down?
This was what I have been looking for. I've watched so many youtube videos and they all recommended 5 pin and all I am doing is lights...so I bought 5 pin and have had the toughest time trying to figure out what the darn thing does and why my switches are powered upside down...this video was perfect. The one question I do have that may be answered in the comments, but didn't see it right off the bat, was what do I do with the extra wire now? Do I leave it? do I cut it? Do I cap it? Appreciate your guidance. Thanks again for a great video!!
hi Chris great videos I just have a question for you as i hooked up a five pole relay the way you said to but am wondering if I just leave 87a not hooked to anything? I installed a bumper that had 4 led lights in it . hooked 86 to my head lights 87 to my led's ran a 12gauge wire from 30pin straight to the battery with a 10amp fuse then ran pin 85 and led ground to chasey ground . but the lights come on right away without anything turned on. when I do turn ignition on and put high beams on the led lights shut off and work correctly the way I thought they should but they stay on when i turn ignition off. i just left 87a not hooked to anything. thanks for your time Chris hope to hear back from you soon .cheers mark...
Perhaps a dumb question but can a 4 prong relay be used as a 3 prong relay? I have a 3 prong relay on my horns in my car. So If I plug battery to 30 and the wire to the horn button is a ground (so 85), that should basically work also no?
Can you reverse the polarity of the relay? i currently have a button for my trunk release. Wiring diagram says that trunk release is white cable (-). Im going to add a remote on that, so in order for it to b continuous, can i add both negative wires on 87a and 30? then blue wire for my remote is 87? then 85 and 86 would be connected to both positive? is that going to work? i need my original switch running, then just adding an additional switch.
I think availability is a reason why people may use a 5 pin. In my circumstance right now, I need a 4 pin normally on relay, but I don't feel like ordering and waiting for the part. Since I can pick up a 5 pin relay anywhere and wire it as such, win.
I have an 08 pathfinder. I'm trying to wire in my remote starter. My car has negative door locks. The door lock switch has a one wire communication line that goes to the bcm and the bcm reverses polarity. Can I wire in a 5 wire relay straight to the driver door lock actuator to reverse polarity. And will it affect the operation of the bcm?
My 1996 ford ranger has a 5 pin relay it says its for the WOT a/c relay. Im thinking its for the a/c compressor. I need to add freon to my ranger but my a/c compressor is not engaged. How can i jump the relay in order to engage the a/c compressor so i can add freon?
I need to connect up another headlight to a motorcycle wiring loom. I've taken the full bike apart and transferred what I can over to a kitcar. I take it I have to use the 5 pin relay to connect another headlight, if I piggy back it of the other will it pull too much power and set a light.
A 5-pin relay can be used as a 4-pin relay. If the price difference is not much, I'll buy a 5-pin relay so I have the option of using it as either 4- or 5-pin. Thanks for the useful video/explanation.
I really enjoyed watching video But I have a question. I want to tap led turn signal strip (12V) but my turn signal voltage drops around 10V when the car is on (when car is off it is sta bil 12v). Can I fix this with a relay and with a stabil 12v froma car battery...
So far the best relay explanation
I actually studied electronics technology in VoTech and Trade School, but was out of the industry for the past 20 years, this was a great refresher course for me. It all came back to me, thanks for posting.
👍👍

Amazingly well explained man!
This is a great explanation for how this is. Honestly as an electrical guy this will be very helpful.
of course there are other uses for the 5 pin but this is a beginner video.. i will UPLOAD a video on other uses for the 5 pin when i get back in the garage.. THANKS for watching..
Honestly it's the best explanation of 5 and 4 pin relays ever. I however I have many cut off shirts lol.
hands down best video on the tube!!!!! / I'm now a subscriber⚡
No fluff, straight to the point, and a great explanation.
Love love your wiring vids!!! Thanks man !
I have some fans I need to wire
I just came across the 4 pin relay definitely seems a lot easier ..
Looking forward to your upcoming vids!
Great video! Explained very well. Resolved my auxiliary fan wiring problems! Thank you!
Thank you for taking the time to explain the subject as well as you have! The best I've seen, so thank you again!
One thing I would like to see on your video is to advise viewers to mount this relays with the mounting tab on top. Most imported relays are not water tight and can short out of fail with ease if mounted in any other direction. Great video and excellent explanation. 👍
Best explanation of a relay I have found.
Love your video man very well explained thanks a lot for doing this a lot of people doesn't understand how to do I really appreciate that my friend I have to watch that a couple of times before I understand
Well done ...Never I seen explanation like this. Thanks

Cuz we don’t know any better until we watch someone like you.🤯
First 2 minutes of this video was just what I needed! Thanks :)
👌best video on the subject period!!!
This was extremely helpful, thank you bro!

Glad I found your video/tutorial, very clear and well presented 👍
Outstanding presentation. Just plain and simple.

I put the first one on and tear it off like Hulkamania Running Wild. Then I put the second one on.
Good vid!! Very well done.
Stay gold.
cracking up at the shirt analogy...lmao.
The t-shirt analogy made me laugh so hard, i spit my beer out. Thank you for this. I learned a ton. Cheers!
Thank you so much. It is easier than read the explanation.
Exactly to the point lots of youtube videos have the 5 pin bought a 4 for a horn setup but other videos made me lose my nerve and you reassured me that I had it right :)
cheers mate just what i was looking for 👍✌

Do you have a video explaining how to read a wires volt and amp
perfect explanation! Thank you.

Great job with this video, thanks
For the 86 pin can I run that on the on and off key switch?
Well explained ! Thanks !
Great explanation!
You sorted me out brother cheers

that may be true.. I found a 5 pack (5pins) online for $12 with wiring plugs and all, shipping included .. the 4 pins were not that cheap
Excellent presentation, communicative description
Very informative. Thanks
