    Hello everybody!
I transcribed the last track of the new CD that ZUN released.
This feeling of sadness and melancholy left me perplexed.
It's been a long time since ZUN composed such an incredible and shocking melody. So automatically this track became my favorite of the whole album and, of course, the first one I was going to transcribe. (I still don't know if I should transcribe another track from this album).
ZUN seems to be using new instruments such as piano variants, acoustic drums and FX's, so my instrument finding is pretty bland.
I tried to improvise with another drum kit and piano, and the result wasn't too bad. The pitch movements of some instruments are not correctly adjusted based on the original track, I wanted to finish the track as soon as possible, but I have faith that the transcription of the notes is pretty close to the original. Sorry if it's not, doing things fast is counterproductive.
As for the album. I was listening to several of their tracks and the originals really caught my attention. ZUN seems to be experimenting even more with different instrumentation and composition style. Some tracks even reminded me of the old style that ZUN used to compose....
It's certainly something quite refreshing and you can definitely feel the effort and passion that ZUN tried to bring to the tracks.
With this I close the description so as not to make it so long. If you liked anything from the album and you have any opinion or recommendation of what other track to transcribe, I'll read you in the comments!
    Anyway, enjoy!

i think this theme is an instant classic. ZUN is clearly expirimenting with different chords and instruments, but his usual strong melody writing shines through. I really love the counter melody going on between the lead and piano as well as little things like the guitar trills to mimic vibrato and the tom fills.

  • @corbeauwrite
    @corbeauwrite Před 8 dny +1

Great work on an already great work.
After listened to it a LOT of times, I think it is one of the most emotionnal music from ZUN and I have a feeling this one is very unique, because it seems to be partly personnal. This music gives me feelings of loosing someone : there is little hope, courage, suffering and then the end is like a scream. Everythings tells me he lost someone close.
The instrument at 0:00 in yellow far bottom (sorry don't know which one), is exactly the same sound of hospital beds metallic wheels. It's a very unatural sound too, that is very mecanic (unmelodic) by its nature, it "should" be not here, but it is. The whole piece starts by it and almost finish by it. It's like the original "problem".
The pianos melody plays as the "surface" emotion, that tend to cycle between, short little joy, hope and sadness.
The back melody (ZUNpets) plays as the "hidden emotion, sadness that boils more and more to a point of explosion.
The last "explosion" is explosing in pain. I think it is the first time we have seen ZUNpets, not as intense demonstration of power, but as intense felt pain.
The parts after explosions got long weird notes of piano, it gives a feeling of emotionnal pain, right?
At 1:39, there is a little piano sub melody that is joyful and ephemeral during the difficult moment, why? Because I guess you try to have a little smile and good time for the other person, even during the difficult time. It happens a 2nd time at 2.48 but you can barely heard it, because the ZUNpets (strong emotions) are taking all the place. You get the idea.
Note that the "wheels" sound is always with the top melody. Meaning? Hospital visits are sad. There is not kicks too, because time is stopping in a way.
The first kick leitmotiv and last kick leitmotiv sound like an heartbeat. Everything starts and stops at the exact first and final heart beat.
If someone knows enough in composition structure, they should defnitly loook into it, to see if it is used in this context. ( Idk, like broken compo for difficult moments, and something more expected for calmer moments?)
You can I am over-interpreting (it's not new in this community^^), but yep, I got theses experiences too, and anyone that got them can relate to them, I have never heard a piece that just hit the nail perfectly like this.
This music is an absolute best for me. from what I heard, lot of touhou music seems to chain ZUN to his full potential somehow.
My poor guess is : he is less pressured to not do touhou music games, and hifuu is actually perfect for this.

I love how people interpret the harmonic structure of the themes from their point of view.
Everything is subject to experiences and that makes various ideas and thoughts go hand in hand with the emotional, from the deepest part of oneself.
As you mention, hifuu not being subject to the theme of “a game”, ZUN can take creative liberties that I personally also like to hear.
I'm bad at interpreting things so usually my analyses are really very vague and simple.
What I can say is that from the depths of the theme I felt melancholy and overcoming.
All the sections have a “sad” harmonic base, in fact the whole beginning implies that. It is not until the implementation of the rhythm and the Saw (0:56) where the song surprisingly gains strength, giving the feeling of overcoming.
The song follows this theme and little details make everything gradually becomes more hopeful:
(1:38) the ornaments of the accompanying the melody.
(1:51) the piano embellishments in the chords
      (3:00) and finally the trumpet.
Despite all this accumulated energy, the ending closes with the same melancholic part of the beginning. It feels liberating, but sad at the same time.
Thank you very much for your comment, I always like to read this kind of interpretations

@@KarlZuniga I am a huge fan of Independent Simulacrum too, when you can "hear" both the imagination (ZUNpets) and the keyboard coding work of an indie dev (piano). There is a wild dialogue between them, then a teamwork of both. Both are building up in a very interesting way. They feel very "loosy" or "relaxed" at start to a more etablished form, until it's repetitive (and effective?)
Tempo is giving the "fever of artists" and I guess flutes are more the personnal satisfaction.
      And obviously signature ToES.

Thank you for transcribing this wonderful track! Great work, it was very precise, this quality at this speed is impressive.
Wow, how much beauty, how much tenderness. This track is really touching, it has such a nostalgic feeling, as if you are walking through memories, some melancholy and some happy. I love the feeling of melancholy mixed with satisfaction/fulfillment. I think this feeling suits a lot as a final track reminiscent of Hifuu Club, this should be the standard for them on CDs. ZUN is a king in creating these feelings, in forming this kind of nostalgia, in building such beautiful melodies. It also sounds kind of spiritual, which makes sense, after all, us and phantoms can't really be said to be that different (that's an excerpt from the story, in this track).
I was really excited to feel how ZUN incorporated old styles. He particularly incorporated elements from my favorite CDs into the style: GFC, CoSD, TGA, NToJ. It also has elements of RCS. The way ZUN commented on the tone of the CD, I imagined we would have a track like "Merry, the Magician", how sad that didn't happen. The arrangement of "Does the Forbidden Door(...)" disappointed me a little, the others are very good. Do you want a transcription recommendation for an original track, right?! How about Tinkerbell of Inequality?

    • @KarlZuniga
      @KarlZuniga  Před 2 měsíci +4

Thank you. I missed transcribing as soon as a track came out.
I love how you explain what you feel when listening to music. You are so much more expressive and it's nice to read your own interpretation.
I can't help but feel sadness and melancholy when listening to this song, although the chorus sounds "hopeful", the most striking thing is how it changes and transports to the sad melody abruptly. As if there is a void always present; and that happens in all the choruses.
Overall, I liked all the tracks. Maybe the Crazy Backup Dancers song doesn't convince me at all (It's my favorite song of all Touhou).
I like the one from TH16 much more. There it sounds much more frantic and crazy, as the title indicates, haha.
It seems like "Tinkerbell of Inequality" was liked by a lot of people, or at least shocked several. I will try to transcribe it, although it will be a headache, everything related to that topic gives vertigo, haha.
Thank you very much for your comment

@@KarlZuniga Thank you! It's cool that Crazy Backup is your favorite Touhou song. I get it, an arrangement that slows down a frantic and crazy song really tends to be disappointing.
"Tinkerbell of Inequality" is certainly shocking. It's funny you say it gives you vestigo, because the first few times I listened to the track it reminded me of your style (well, maybe just 1/4 of the track to be exact). "Morning Comes on Tanabata Hill" also reminded me.

Too bad you couldn’t get the drums, piano or synth but at least it still sounds nice, though honestly i wouldve taken you taking maybe two more days to flesh this theme out more but its fine. kinda sad that it seems the sd-90 is slowly fading out with only the zunpet remaining as the sole thing ZUN will never replace, tg3 seems to have been replaced with 4knob popd
Lets at least hope ZUN keeps these drums because they’re the best he’s used in a while
So would be either another tjd track, th19 theme, or original i assume

    • @KarlZuniga
      @KarlZuniga  Před 2 měsíci +1

Honestly, my main goal of the transcriptions is not to make them sound very similar or exactly the same as in the original. Those would be recreations (which I have uploaded a couple of).
Rather, I'm just looking to try to identify the notes, the mixing and instrumentation sort of takes a back seat. If I don't know what instruments ZUN used, then I try to improvise with other or similar instruments. Searching for the instruments used is a tedious and time-consuming job, so I prefer to avoid it haha.
Another reason why I uploaded it fast is that every time ZUN releases something new in terms of music, I get too much motivation to be able to transcribe quickly and make the video. Unfortunately that motivation doesn't last long though.
I hope ZUN doesn't forget about the SD-90, they still use it for melodic instruments so I wouldn't worry about that.
I was transcribing the Enoko track, but maybe I'll try transcribing "Tinkerbell of Inequality". Anyway, first it's time to rest a bit and then I'll see what to transcribe first

@@KarlZuniga Well, I miss when ZUN used to use sd-90 presets for other stuff, because if he only uses it for melodic instruments, then that heavily limits what he would use, like clav, harpsichord, organ, strings (though he did use some in this album) or all the weird stuff in the special set. also what do you think the percussion in tinkerbell of inequality would be. Also given how you used "Apparitions Abound Even Outside of Night" as the translation, you should've made a reference to Rumia in say the instrumentation, given how accuracy in that front isn't your main goal. Also sorry but you've basically become my source of Touhou midi's given how all the other midi makers (williatico, lona, kr palto, etc) haven't posted in a while.
