Thanks guys. I wasn’t aware that he was creams drummer. I’m still learning who’s all apart of the bands I react to. This is a learning experience for me. Not an expert on knowing who’s all apart of each band
He was also the drummer for Blind Faith with a very young Steve Winwood and Clapton and a guy named Ric Grech. Do What You Like is a great song by them, with some good solos by Clapton and Winwood on keys and Baker.
You should watch the documentary Beware of Mr Baker about him from about 10 years ago. The guy was a nut and gigantic.
@@jzeke1712 Winwood was only 3 years younger than Clapton and actually began his career at 14 years old when he joined THE SPENCER DAVIS GROUP.
@@donaldschank2302 Yes and he was younger than that when he was playing pubs with father and his brother. They would actually turn the piano around so he didn't face the crowd, because it was so obvious that he was underage!

I was about to say the same thing. It was actually Ginger's idea to put Cream together - so I guess the correction is that Clapton was Ginger's guitar player.

Cream were a British rock band formed in London in 1966. The group consisted of bassist Jack Bruce, guitarist Eric Clapton, and drummer Ginger Baker. Bruce was the primary songwriter and vocalist, although Clapton and Baker also sang and contributed songs. Formed from members of previously successful bands, they are widely regarded as the world's first supergroup. Cream was highly regarded for the instrumental proficiency of each of their members.
Ginger Baker, one of the GOATS 🐂🐂. This was great to see and hear again. The man was 66 freakin’ years old for this performance. Really a generational drummer. Ginger was a deep student of African drum rhythms as well as jazz. He was one third of the iconic supergroup, Cream, with Clapton and Jack Bruce. ( all up there) Great selection, Chod!
I was also hearing some Celtic rhythms like you’d hear on the Bodhran ( Irish hand drum).
I believed that Professor Neil Peart gotten his influences from Ginger Baker.
Ginger was originally a jazz drummer. You could probably tell that. This was the Cream reunion from 2005. GB popularized drum solos in rock music but very few were as inventive as this one. He was more than a drummer, he was a composer and arranger as well. A musician in other words. He raced bicycles which gave him the leg strength for his double bass; he would do solos while he smoked a cigarette. Ginger was an authentic and eccentric -some said crazy - Cockney tough guy. Not someone you'd want to piss off. RIP
He is not Eric Clapton's drummer, He was the drummer of Cream.

Ginger Baker is THE drummer, along with Jack Bruce and Eric Clapton are Cream. Ginger Baker was highly influential to drummers around him and countless more since. But when you get 3 type-A personalities it was bound to explode sooner than later, which did happen. Watch what he does with many of the songs he plays, power yet subtle, he set the bar high at the time (and since).
Supposedly Ginger and Jack Bruce hated each other. Bruce gave an interview in which he said that Ginger knocked him to the floor once and then pulled a knife saying "Don't come to the next gig". He laughed about it. Just a clash of personalities

But certainly after seeing the doc, Beware of Mr. Baker, it's easy to see that Ginger had a permanent shiv stuck in the side of his personality.
This IS Cream, on a quick three city reunion tour in 2005 with only 4 shows in the states. I was at one of the MSG shows. a life long dream. Unfortunately time has caught up to both Ginger and Jack Bruce with only Clapton enduring. One of the first true supergroups.
Ginger Baker is a legend for many reasons.
Ginger Baker was the most influential rock drummers in history. His work with Cream in his prime was ahead of its time. Louie Bellson was the first drummer ever to use double bass (in jazz), but Ginger was the first drummer to use double bass in rock. He’s a legend and was an innovator. Check out Cream’s version of Toad recorded live in the 1960s so you can hear him in his heyday.
There’s a video of The Toad performed in 1968 at the Royal Albert Hall you should react to. Ginger in his prime putting on a clinic. The live version on Wheels of Fire is also phenomenal and may be the quintessential performance. It’s the one I tried mimicking when I was learning to play drums in the early 1980s. 👍🏻

Chod, I can't believe you're a drummer and don't know about Ginger Baker. He's one of THE rock drummers of all time. People who don't automatically say Bonham or Moon, would probably say Baker is the GOAT of at least of that generation. And he's got miles wide horizons, played a lot of jazz, played drums w/ Fela (amazes me), could do anything and did. Cream was just his most famous gig.

Cream is the group, all players are members of the group. People forget you are a younger generation. Ginger is a iconic drummer.
Forgot to mention that he loved African drumming and music. You can hear that in this piece. He put together a band called Air Force post-Cream. Well worth a listen, very Afro-inflected. He eventually married a Nigerian woman and lived in Nigeria

The history of the drums in one solo: from the rhythms that come down to us as Afro-Cuban, to jazz, to swing, to rock. It's all there. One of the all-time greatest drum solos.
When Cream first came out, he played what I called lead drums. White Room & Sunshine of Your Love are just 2 examples. He was the best, IMHO. And they were called Cream because each was considered among the BEST at their instruments.✌️❤️🎶

I am sure if you had asked Ginger when he was with us he would say that Eric Clapton was his guitarist ! LOL Beside the fact that he never got along Jack Bruce as it was total chaos of a band but they made great music. I saw they way way back at the Grande Ballroom in Detroit Place was an haunted old theater with the seats removed.....Wild everyone was so high on something you could walk right up to the stage and be 15 feet from the band .....
Before Cream, Ginger Baker and Jack Bruce were both members of The Graham Bond Organization. Check out their song “Camels and Elephants”. It’s another great Ginger Baker drum solo.
That's Ginger on the Cream t shirt he is wearing. He is the first person on the left. Named Ginger because of his ginger hair. Double bass was Ginger's thing! Cream was known for being loud in their live performances.
Ginger Baker and Jack Bruce, who were the drummer and bass/vocalist of Cream with Eric Clapton, came from a jazz background and were excellent musicians.
Time and Auther (Arthritis) end the careers of many drummers.
I know enough to realize I don't know enough about percussion to fully appreciate what is happening.
Jack Bruce did play jazz and blues and rock, but he was also a classically trained multi-instrumentalist who played bass, keyboards, cello, guitar and I'm not sure what else.
Yes, he and Keith Moon adopted the double bass after watching a jazz drummer perform, revolutionized rock drumming.
The first one is the CREAM reunion they had at the Royal Albert Hall . In the audience there were celebrities and musicians watching . I was there the second night in the nose bleed section . Although my seats were way at the top , I can still say that I experience CREAM.🎸🤙
Ginger (Mad-Man) Baker was the first Star Drummer in the late 60’s Blues/Rock era. I saw him in LA during the Cream farewell tour.
And BTW: Calling Ginger, Clapton’s drummers is like calling Bonzo, Robert Plants drummer.
I love your reactions but I'm surprised you never heard of Ginger Baker. He part of a trio in the late 60's in the first supergroup called CREAM. Stewart Copeland of the POLICE considers his biggest influence on his drumming. I believe like Charlie Watts, he was more of a jazz musician. Later on he toured with his own band and showed his techniques. There's a documentary called "Beware of Mr. Baker. He might have the easiest person to get along with everyone but he was himself. Enjoy and check out songs from cream like "sunshine of ur love," " white room"

It's fun to watch a young drummer see Ginger for the first time.
Yeah, Cream reunion. I saw them live in September (or October) 1967 in Boston's old Psychedelic Supermarket (a store basement venue in Kenmore Square). They did this live. It was the first drum solo that I really enjoyed. It opened my eyes. And it's true jazz in that it's different every time. It sent me back to appreciate Gene Krupa and Buddy Rich. Study the masters, they'll show you ways to go out of the box. Then be your own man.
Had the enormous pleasure of seeing him do this live with Cream and also the solo he did with Blind Faith. This is the 2005 Cream reunion tour and the song is " Toad " which you actually reacted to off the studio version from the Fresh Cream album.
Now, all that's left for you to complete the journey is to react to the " Wheel's of Fire " version. Please 🙏🤠👍

Glad you got to this. His mastery of polyrhythms is par excellence. He innovated so much for rock and metal. First drummer to bring double bass from jazz to rock. If I remember, he invented the sizzle cymbal. Crazy part is his eyes are shut the entire time! Please check Buddy Rich at the Hague

The most fascinating and insane documentary on Ginger. I think it is on Netflix. Madness, drugs, temper who knows but captivating viewing.
Ginger was a jazz drummer before he was a rock and roller. He was one of first rock and roll superstar drummers. He passed in 2019. He played with Clapton in Cream and also in Ginger Baker's Air Force.
And let us not forget Blind Faith!

It has been a long time since I have listened to Toad. I am a big Rush fan. You can really hear why Baler was an influence for Neil Peart here. Listen to Peart's great drum solos and you can here the influence. So many great drummers cite Baker as a major influence. He is such an innovator and a legend.
IMO, with '60's Cream, Ginger had possibly the best drum sound ever. So natural. The tom sound on Fresh Cream was the bees knees!

Ginger was the drummer for the power trio "Cream" The members of the group were Jack Bruce - Bass and lead/ background vocals Eric Clapton - Guitar lead/backgound vocals and the great Ginger Baker- Drums /percussion. They were THE power trio of the time!
This was the "Cream" (2005 reunion concerts at the Royal Albert Hall),
All 3 WERE "Cream" and all 3 are VIRTUOSOs in their own right, on their own instruments, in fact Jack Bruce (on base) is a virtuoso on Double-bass(played for the Scottish Philharmonic Orchestra as a Kid before he played Jazz and Blues) and on Bass guitar, he also plays piano to a high-level and a couple of other instruments also! He writes songs (Cream Songs with Clapton and Ginger Baker) and also Sings Lead Vocals on many of Creams songs.. but he only ever plays Bass Guitar usually in Cream and other appearances but I did see one clip from the 1980s of him singing a sublime Solo song (playing a Grand piano!) which is well worth checking out! Only time I ever saw him play a piano and you'd think he was known as a pianist watching it!
Ginger Baker is a founding-member of Cream (With Jack Bruce and Eric Clapton) he was a Virtuoso Jazz drummer, before during and after Cream played all his life until his death a couple years ago and was revered as probably the best drummer of all time by other musicians and drummers, he was known as (and considered himself) a jazz drummer above all else (as did Jack Bruce consider himself a classical musician originally, then Jazz Musician, aswell as Rock and Blues afterward playing with many famous bands and people on collaboratons)
Eric Clapton obviously in the heyday of Cream before and after was considered one of the greatest Blues guitarists and Songwriters of All time.
Together (all 3) as "Cream" were WITHOUT DOUBT THE GREATEST TRIO/BAND of instrumentalists the world has EVER seen! In terms of their INDIVIDUAL VIRTUOSITY coming together as ONE group/Trio in "Cream" hense the name they were "The Cream" of the crop and the influence they had, discovering rural blues in america, bringing the records back to London and reinventing and reintroducing it in London and then exporting the Blues back to America and the rest of the world, and Writing iconic Rock and Blues songs! (All 3 acknowledged eachother as the Cream of the Crop on their own instruments and that's why they called the group "Cream").
They split up in 1968or 1969 (there's a famous tribute to them by Jimi Hendrix on BBC2 Top of The Pops in 1969 where he played their song instead of his own as homage to them having split up(it's on CZcams)
Anyhow this set of concerts was the first time they'd played together since late 60s when they split up(as they weren't talking) they reconciled and played these concerts as Jack Bruce had nearly died from Cancer and wasn't in good health here even though he was fantastic you can see he's not a well man and he died not that long after these coverts I think. So these concerts are like a moment of Musical Gold in Music History as they got back playing like they'd never been apart and in fact they all said they were probably better than in the 1960s as they'd all gained more experience over the years in their own genres and ventures but Ginger Baker is renowned as probably the best Drummer of all time. He played with other artists and away from Cream he was also heavily into Jazz. Lived in Brazil I think and incorporated many influences from Scottish marching bands to Brazilian beats, big band sounds, Jazz, and many other genres in between. It's what made his playing unique. His mind CLEARLY worked on a while other level in terms of coordination.. IMMENSE SKILL and Dexterity on drums!
He died a few years ago but theres a documentary on his again I think by the BBC following his death that has interviews with both Ginger Baker before his death, Eric Clapton, and Jack Bruce about the band their history about Ginger Baker and a drummer and many famous people paying tribute to him. There's also another tribute to Jack Bruce im which his many many high level endeavours are talked about again has all three members and others in that also so well worth you checking those out!
So yeah Ginger Baker wasn't just Eric Claptons Drummer, he was a renowned Jazz artist in his own right(and had a reputation for having a temper and being hard to get along with lol I'm Claptons words "He was a Loveable London Rogue" I think he put it in one of the documentaries.

This is Cream playing...Ginger on drums, Eric and Jack on guitar and singing. Back in the day he had a head full of red curly hair, ha ha but he can still drum it. I think this is 2005 in the UK. Says they hadn't played together in 4 decades...I hope they had a great time! He even has on a Cream t-shirt.

"I Feel Free" by Cream has the most iconic hit hat pattern in Rock music. Highjy revered by other great drummers. Check out his documentary, he's a total original.
At the time of this reunion in 2005, Ginger Baker was 65 years old. Jack Bruce had survived a liver transplant two years earlier. Eric was the youngest member of Cream. I believe he was 60 at the time. They performed for one week (five performances) at the Royal Albert Hall in London. Cream formed in 1966 and disbanded in 1969. The world waited 35 years for a reunion. Tickets sold out within hours. They were The Cream.
His timing remains impeccable as well throughout! Mr Baker was and is quite a drummer! 👍

Saw Cream back in 67 and Baker was just insane on drums. The best of the best. Review the Cream at the Grande Ballroom 67. I was at that concert. They changed everything.

back in around 1970-ish Ginger had a stage built in the middle of Africa, somewhere, miles from anywhere. Native Africans came from miles around, to hear him do a massive solo. i used to have it on tape
Cream was at the top back in the late 60s and Ginger was one of the first to utilize double basses. The Sizzle ride cymbal he is playing in this 2005 live reunion concert was the same exact one he played in Creams time!

The name of this song is "Toad". His 1970? version of Toad is really good. He was in his 20s. He was one of the first with double base drums.
You oughta check out the biopic titled "Beware Mr Baker". A really good movie that doesn't hide what a difficult personality he was, while displaying what an incredible artist he was. After drumming in Cream, & then Blind Faith, he went to Africa and drummed with the legendary radical Fela Kuti's band. I got to see Cream 3 times; the second was the night before they recorded the live sessions at Winterland for Wheels of Fire. Words can't express.

Yea watch the documentary Watch Out For Mr Baker. This man was one of a kind and someone you didn't want to piss off. He was a real BAD ASS. Also one of the best drummers ever. Same level as John Bonham. In all seriousness as a drummer you will want to see and watch how Brilliant this man was. He was a bad ass right up until he drew his last breath. 1968 The cream played their final gig at the Albert Hall in London, we who loved Cream wept.
The 2005 reunion was a dream come true & they were even better.
Sadly we won't see their like again!
You must be very young to have not known who these guys were. I bet your parents were infants at best in 1968 if indeed they were born.
IMO, Ginger's best drumming is on the live version of "Spoonful" on Cream's "Wheels of Fire" recording. In addition, Ginger recorded with Charlie Haden and Bill Frisell and there are live versions of these compositions on CZcams that are worth checking out.
Eric Clapton, Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker formed Cream in the late 60's. Back then Ginger's drumset had hardly any mics.
Of course you can buy a ride like this now. But way back in the day...50'ish years ago we made our own. A trip to the office supply store, tape measure, and a drill.
I think Ginger Baker is quite possibly (imo) the best drummer I have heard. He had a strange life - multiple influences - eccentric - huge talent.
Your watching the great cream. Arguably the top 5 in there instrumental categories in everyone’s list. He played with blind faith after cream. If you really want to check out greatness watch buddy rich playing impossible drum solo. He actually had a heart attack and finished the show. He is and was the greatest drummer ever no doubt. I promise your mind will be blown away with his speed and skill.
I remember seeing an old drum solo of his and it was clear what an influence he was on Neil Peart from Rush as there were elements from Neil's solos that were directly from the Ginger Baker solo I saw.

Gene Krupa, along with Buddy Rich a superstar drummer who always included a massive drum solo in concert. I couldn't remember his name. Popular in WWII. A long time between superstar drummers. Chick Webb was the man in the thirties and he died young.

1st Baker was 66 years old when they made this. Neal Pert said that Ginger Baker had much influence on hs style
I was at that concert at The Royal Albert Hall in London, when Cream had their final reunion before the sad death of the great Jack Bruce.
this is cream, they put the best drummer, guitar player , and bass player together and formed Cream, the original super group
Hey Chad. I saw Cream play live in my youth. Yeah I'm an old dude and I enjoy your channel and the energy you bring to it. As for Cream, they were ahead of there time. Thdey would go off into these 20 minute jams that were mind blowing. We walked out going what the f***k did we just listen to!
You should watch "Beware MR. Baker", it will give you more insight on the man, his personality, and his accomplishments. It was done 7 years before he died at the age of 80.
