How I mix rhythm & lead: no more bluesy noodling

  • Here's a funky, r&b-style solo blues piece. The idea is to have bit of shape and direction when you're playing on your own, by mixing rhythm and lead guitar stuff whilst maintaining a steady groove. A really fun and useful skill to master.

I just wanted to thank you for making videos like this. For some of us…myself being one such person…it helps to cope with depression. You have done a kind thing by giving me something to focus in that brings happiness and joy when I feel a bit disconnected during this period of isolation and uncertainty. Genuinely, thank you.

I love how this channel has content about shoegaze, indie rock, noise and post-punk, but also has this kind of stuff, or more technical stuff. It indirectly tells me that "playing indie guitar is not an excuse to stay in a comfort zone". Very underrated channel.

This is a great way to practice. You end up learning so much and any time you get lost, you can just go back to the rhythm part for a few bars until you feel it again. A couple of notes makes a big difference. You always need to know what key you are playing in or you are just noodling around. Learning rhythm patterns is key here.

Very good video. I am an intermediate player and try to play blues like this but mine don't sound as good as this. My playing doesn't have this level of variety either. But, this gave me some ideas about using more chord variations to play in different positions up the neck. I like the way you showed the different C chords in their CAGED forms and how the pentatonic scale forms related to each chord version. Very cool.
