- Bikes have been a hot ticket item during the Covid pandemic as more people look for recreational activities and outdoor transportation. With more bikes and other forms of micromobility on the road, transportation experts say the moment is prime for a transit upheaval in the United States. Here’s how the Covid bike boom could change the way Americans get to work and around major cities.

Covid-19 Caused A Boom In Bikes, But Most U.S. Cities Aren’t Ready For It
Did you invest in a bike during the coronavirus pandemic? Let us know in the comments if you plan to stick with it after the pandemic.
The boom is mostly because of Xiaomi trotinette and the use of powerfull brushless motors and li ion bateries from China. These bikes have motors and can have a decent long range .

If you haven't visited Amsterdam or Copenhagen then you have no idea; the bike is ubiquitous & purpose driven in all weather, parking can be a problem, most have integrated locks, drivers are much more respectful compared to North America because in Europe driving is more of a "privilege" than a "right."
I can't fully agree with your comment. Copenhagen is shown as a great city to bike in while it is not a safe city to bike in. Nice that they have a lot of bike lanes but if you don't feel safe when biking then what's the point? I certainly do not think that crossings they use are any safe. Very often no split between cars and bikes and no elements slowing down cars. Most cities want to be like them because it is low cost and does not really annoy every other vehicle but they are not a good showcase for biking. Probably why many videos talk about Copenhagen while it is not really safe but it is very realistic to implement in let's say New York city without destroying existing infrastructure.
Amsterdam, really? Just don't go into the Dutch, they breath bikes. Well designed cities and streets with massive focus on bikes. Whole country is one massive bike line to be honest. I honestly think that no other country is able to implement what the Dutch did because their streets are made to be safe for bikers and not cars. The amount of small little elements they place on the streets to make biking safe is crazy. They are really masters of sea and bikes.

- high speed bycycle lanes that are as most crossing free and seperated from car traffix as possible.
- by law the car driver has always keep bicycles in mind. _IN case of an car/bicycle accident the car driver is always guilty as long as it could not proofed that the biker was driving like a total idiot.
- new kind of streets created where bicycles have absolute priorety, cars are tolerated but most always give priorety to the bikes (mostly in residential areas)
- Traffic light sequences (crossing to crossing) adopted to "typical" bicycle speeds - Therefore no red light (traffic lights get green before reeaching it) for bicylces when drivign at that speed - This also decreases the driving speed from cars, bacause they know - Driving faster often means waiting longer at red light.

So what is the breakdown of cyclists during the pandemic who are strictly recreational riders vs those who have switched over it as a new mode of transportation? That would be very important to look at to determine the need for new infrastructure instead of just bike sales and miles driven. I am a long time cyclist and would prefer a smart approach to new infrastructure.
Or, maybe if the infrastructure is there, more people would use it, because some riders see lack of safety as a barrier.
Well it’s time. When I visited the US I was shocked that utility cycling was outright unheard of and no one understood why I rode a bike in winter. Most customers have been unbelievably rude, treating you like a criminal because you cannot get hold of a certain bike they want. It has been so stressful that I dread going to work now and panic when the new work week rolls around. We were a 5 man crew a couple of years ago and during this pandemic we are now down to 2... Please people, I'm glad you've found a new hobby but so has everyone else. Please face the facts that stock is going to be a struggle for at least a year, maybe longer.
Rode my mountain bike during the entire lockdown/furlowing. Had a great year =D
I ventured out more that I normally do by bike. I learned 3 years ago how much fun it is going by bike.
As a longtime biker, I have really enjoyed seeing more and more folks out and about and riding this year. But boy, did I pick a heck of a year to decide to build up a new bike haha
record use of communal bikes in covid hotspots? The USA really is the kid determined to bath with the toaster.
"Bath with the toaster". 🤦♂️
And the cyclists love tightly congregating in groups or in parks, unmasked of course. You're right the US is just masochistic.
you are never going to be closer than 6 feet when on a bike.
cars cage you in with others.
@@plasmaglowmusic1655 Tell that to the groups of bicyclists I see riding side-by-side everyday.
@@chegadesuade if you are on a bike, the air around you is moving constantly. nothing like a car.
Problem is that they are sold out. About 1 year to receive a higher end bike after ordering.
Funny how I too just got into Mountain Biking couple months ago.. and this showed up👌
Here in Toronto, Covid has caused a bike infrastructure boom. What took ten years to attain is now taking months to occur and looking good for 2021 and beyond.
This makes me want to buy a bike now
In Turin's suburbs a lot of sidewalks have been divided between bikes and people!
Herwme in my country, bike and e-scoot just like everywhere during pandemic. Until now, it still goes high and high and unfortunately, bike stores raised their prices. I, my self bought 1 too. Never had a bike before but after i had it it was amazing. I felt goood. I have a car but biking became like a therapy.
It’s easier, cheaper, cleaner and happier, that simple. 😍🥰🚲🚲
Laughs in Dutch
🤣🇳🇱
Currently assembling one 🤣🤣🤣
Looked for a entry level road bike (~$1K), none of the stores I went to were available. I had to get the bike I had in college (80's Fuji), fixed up, to ride around the city, but not gonna do any long rides I wanted to do.
7:00: One type they missed is what they have near my office. It looks like there are two sidewalks, one for pedestrians and one for bikes. I feel like that is a great idea in places that have the space for it.
City planners can create the space.
I am an avid cyclist and I'm glad to see more people riding. I hope a lot of them keep it up. I am sure a lot of the bikes bought during Covid will end up on Craigslist shortly after thing get back to "normal".
Here in Lombok Island Indonesia, even the old series bike is expensive 😭😭
Before COVID I had 1 bike. Now during COVID I end up 3 bikes. Make my pocket empty. 🥵
I was looking for a bike last summer and there was SOLD OUT notices everywhere. So this year I'm shopping now for a bike I can enjoy in the upcoming spring.
It has nothing to do with bicycles. Its everything in general. Motorcycles are selling out, pit bikes are nearly impossible to find. Game consoles are sold out. Tons of products are drying up. Also since factories are shutting down the importation and domestic production of these items are lower than normal.
Roads often not designed for bikes can flip over if bike tire falls in drain opening they should cross bar drain openings so bikes don't get flipped.
Bought a really nice used bike last May right when they couldn't keep up with demand and production and shipping was interrupted by COVID shutdowns. Within a couple week the internet was really picked over and the bikes that were available, even used, skyrocketed. I was really lucky, more than smart.
I bought my new bike last May too. I was already looking for a new one before that since my 10 year old bike had 5500 miles on it. I got lucky too. I know the mechanics at my local shop really well and the moment the one I wanted hit the floor they called me. The prices have gone insane. I paid 650 for the one I wanted and they're selling the same bike for 800 bucks now.
Kudos for pronouncing "Bogotá" correctly
Been biking for 3 years and lost 250 pounds in 3 years I love riding people dont realize it has many great benefits it cured me of high blood pressure high cholesterol I ride to stay fit and to be healthy get out there and be fit and healthy you will need your mobility as you get older theres no teling what will happen tomorrow
Am proud, keep cycling.
@@benobaars I'm proud of cyciling people just drive around in there cars smoking blunts drinking eating crappy processed fast foods doing drugs and being stupid if I hadn't been bike riding I'd be worse today bit but I'm happy to be riding it saved me from the health problems I had in 2017 now people just dont take care of them selves and spread hate and jealousy towards other people who are get out there and keep riding and working out
I bought a mtb in June for fun and a commuter bike last month! Also Seattle based, the city is very bike-friendly.
True! I'm in Ghana, but I got a bike this year!
I also bought a new bike due to this situation 🌝
Bike Paths should be like mini Roads - The Cyclist on the actual path, while giving walkers
a Sidewalk.
@Commenter2 Yep, and having been both cyclist and pedestrian, these speed demons either don’t announce themselves at all, or ring the bell only when they’re right behind pedestrians. It’s super rude because the people they sneak up on like that are too startled to react.
I wish cyclists would ring further back to give pedestrians advance notice, call out which side they’ll be on, pass with plenty of space at a reasonable speed, and always say thanks after passing. I try to do that as much as I can when I’m on a bike.
in regards to "fuel taxes should go towards car/road infastructure" well if you use more money on bike infastructure, more and more people will decide they can use bikes instead of cars, meaning less traffic on the roads
If only there were bike lanes between my job and my house.
