Fly with a SERVICE DOG // How To Do AIRPORT SECURITY SCREENING with a Service Dog

  • A frequently asked question about my service dog is how to get the dog through airport security screening! When I first considered flying with Buddy, I didn't know how to get a service dog through airport security. I had so many questions!
    - What is airport security like with a service dog?
    - What is it look like when TSA is screening a service dog?
    - Do service dogs get searched at airport security?
    - Does airport security separate you from your service dog?
    - Do my dog's shoes go in the x-ray bin, or are they in an exempt group?
    Going through airport security with a service dog isn't as challenging as you might think at first, but it is a lot easier when you know what to expect. The security process can already be stressful enough without a chronic illness and worrying about getting your dog through security too!
    If you are considering travel with a service dog, I hope you find this video helpful. The service dog screening is much smoother once you have clear expectations!

    I love this. I have a service dog in training and she’s still working on self control when it comes to “direct contact” with people. She’s 9 months old and when people touch her/pat her down, she thinks she’s not working anymore. I switch to a slip lead (has no metal on it) and walk through with her. I’ve had no issues. I just grab my belongings and keep it moving.

      I use a gentle lead to train Freja on distraction and pulling. Good idea to set boundaries for your service down when it is OK to interact with people and when it is time to work. Try to train your service dog with training in the gear. Freja knows when it is time to work when she has her gear on. On Duty and off duty is a great concept to train self-control. I am still owner training Freja since she is almost 17 months. I would do a lot of handling exercises with treats. Also let people try to handle your dog when they are off duty.

    Thank you so much for this video. I'm trying my dog to be my service dog. And this was a nerve racking thing for me. Thank you for explaining it. This is my very first time doing all of this. So this video helped me so much. Any advice is very much appreciated 😊. I'm trying my dog to help with my social anxiety or anxiety in general and my high functioning autism and my adhd (not hyper but I get hyper fixated or focused and it can be hard to switch gears into doing something else 😅) . My dog is a Cavachon named Sunny and he's a super sweet boi with a heart of gold 💛. Do you have any advice for hotels for service dogs?

    SAME I am going on my first flight with my SD and I am terrified of taking all her stuff off, so I would much rather have both of us patted down (despite hating being touched) than have something go wrong. Most of her work is done at home, but even when we go out its not usually to big crazy places like malls or airports so we've been practicing so much for the sake of training as much as my own comfort and being able to believe in her and that it will go smoothly. As stated in the video if they sense you doubt them, then they will also doubt you and that's when things can go wrong more often than not.

    There are some creators on etsy who make no metal harnesses, leashes and collars for service dogs, they just use the plastic clips, zippers and clasps instead of the metal ones.

    Glad to see service dog videos are coming back 🎉 I have an Assistance Dog in Australia and am considering flying with her (domestically on short flight first to see how it goes). How long can Buddy hold his pee for? Whats the maximum flight length you would consider taking him (I mean how many hours max)? Toilet stuff is what I am most worried about.

    • @builtontherockhomestead9390
      @builtontherockhomestead9390 Před rokem +2

      My dog isn't a service dog but she holds her pee a ridiculous amount of time. I can be gone all day but she doesn't want out when I come home. My friend's have to get someone to let their dog out after just a few hours. Every dog is different. I would take notes on how often does your dog ask to pee? Learn your dog's habits.

    • @MommingwithMigraine
      @MommingwithMigraine  Před rokem +3

      Definitely depends on the dog, and even if they CAN it doesn't mean they SHOULD. Buddy is a hold-it-forever type, so I'd say 16 hours is the max I'd be comfortable with for him, but with strategy in place for when to limit food and water. I'm choosing that number because that's the stretch he seems comfortable with naturally if I don't ask him to pee in the morning. I've never tested or thought about this, total gut reaction answer 🤷🏼‍♀️

    I am in a wheelchair and use to fly regularly with my service dog. They cannot separate dog from handler ( even to go through and then call your dog through). It's ADA. Where I go, she goes! I never had an issue. They just sing a wand around me and my dog...no pat down, no touching.

  • @EminayDrackoness

    also, if you have liquid medicine like saline bags or banana bags or liquid food they have a special machine that can test the liquids and you can have them. Also good for baby bottles.

    Does anyone know if they allow an extra bag for supplies? I know they allow it for like medical equipment and technically the dog is medical. Like if I have a whole backpack in addition to my carry on limit do I have to pay for it cause it has my service dogs equipment in it?

      At one point I was a service dog handler (she passed away in March of 2020) and haven't found another potential dog yet. But I wasn't able to go through metal detectors/body scanners when I had to fly because of medical equipment in and on me. I always had to opt for pat downs however, I actually prefer to do the strip search option because of how severe my chronic pain conditions are (light pressure hurts to no end while deep pressure feels good for me- best to not ask.....).

      FWIW, I trained my wife's Service Dog, (Such an amazing creature) he is young 2 years now and has been on 2 flights with American Airlines, The experience with both them and the TSA was awesome. My wife has a lot of metal implants and usually opts for the pat down so I walk her SD through security and neither of us has set off alarms. We don't fly enough to warrant the expense of doing a pre-check. YMMV.

    You should talk about Angel Flight. These people provide free flights for people in need of medical treatment far from home using volunteer general aviation pilots and aircraft.
    Just totally skip TSA.
