I know this video is 2 years old. I have Phonak hearing aids. My hearing professional never showed me how to set up the app. Every Thursday I go to trivia night in a noisy environment. I followed your instructions and was able to understand people sitting at my table finally. Thank you for making it simple.

Thank you Dr. Cliff. I needed hearing aids. I knew nothing about them. I found your channel and did my research there. I am in Maryland. When I went for an audiology appointment, the audiologist fitted me for Phonak Paradise rechargeables. I was happy to have learned about them from you. It greatly reduced my anxiety level about the whole experience. I wear them every day. They make such a difference. Thank you again!

Thanks for the video.. I made some adjustments on the clarity for the tv program.. I went up on the soft sounds with the tv on and off.. I noticed the sounds I was hearing with the tv on was things making soft sounds such as the dishwasher because you can’t hardly hear it running with normal hearing.. So it made a racket while soft sounds were up so I found it was better to go back down on it .. Getting there though.. Plus I have to consider every one else hearing is normal besides mine.. Have the washer and dryer in background sometimes as well..

I just bought my first pair of hearing aids, I believe it's the phonak 90 lumi or paradise, one of those but it's the rechargeable one so this video will be great. I already have an incredibly soft voice so I won't need that setting 😅 but the noisy environments I struggle with my anxiety become of the overwhelming noise so having this set up I hope will help ease some of that anxious feeling :)

Cliff, can you do a video (or two) on two related subjects?
    (1) The importance of having a dark mode for the app interface-of ANY hearing aid, not just Phonak. I go to the theatre frequently, every theatre is different and there’s no way to make nuanced adjustments on the app without the white-background screen disturbing those around you.
    (2) Your review of the Signia 2-processor model blew my mind, because I FINALLY understood why the Bose Hearphones were so much more versatile than ANY hearing aid - including the Phonak Naida Ps that I now wear - in letting the user control real-world and streaming input independently. CLEARLY the Hearphones were designed with two processors, one for each function. And dollars-to-doughnuts, the reason why the new Bose hearing aids don’t Bluetooth stream is because they eliminated a processor in order to keep them small - and because at that size, they couldn’t replicate the Hearphones’ level of control between functions, which must have established an operational standard for Bose. On regular hearing aids, the transition time between the release of the Bluetooth hold and your being able to “reclaim” real-world sound is a constant pain; as is not being able to adjust the two levels of volume independently. In fact, I usually have the Hearphones with me anyway, because in some environments they’re much better able to handle my needs. Give some thought, please, to advocating for a separate Bluetooth processor as a standard feature. (My hearing loss is moderate to severe, by the way, and the Hearphones would still provide ample benefit if I hadn’t started losing high note-pitch and key center in music. And my audiologist is excellent: it was his Real Ear Measurement of the Hearphones that triggered his ordering a power BTE pair for me, rather than trying yet another RIC that didn’t deliver a wide enough envelope for the way I need to hear music. And for that, the Phonaks are a life-saver.)

Good point about using the Phonac app in a theatre setting. I turn my iPhone's display brightness to the minimum setting. This, and keeping the iPhone on my knee, out of the line of sight, this seems to work reasonably well to prevent disturbing my neighbour during a play.

II have learned a lot from your video's. Thank you. I started out with Oticon hearing aids and after several weeks I decided to switch to Phonic Audeo P50-R. I like these a lot better. My Tinnitus has disappeared and I understand speech better. The problem is my audiologist forbids me to use the app. I do understand sound and the adjustments one can make with the app. She wants me to leave all adjustments to her including the volume. I hear way too much of the high frequencies and it is disturbing. It sounds like I have chains clanging everywhere I go. Is there a reason to not make adjustments and leave the programing the same, like do the hearing aids learn and adjust themselves ?

Hi Dr. Cliff, I've been following your channel since the end of last month (Oct) when I started experiencing "double hearing" in my right ear. I could not find any related topic in your channel, but an online search indicates that I might have what they call "diplacusis monauralis". I already booked an appointment to see a nearby audiologist (in Canada) but the appointment is still about 2 weeks away. My main symptoms include hearing additional sound in my right ear, on top of the original sound, with different tone/pitch, and light imbalance especially in the morning but nothing else. I don't notice any hearing loss compared to before. I wonder what should I do while waiting for my appointment 2 weeks later, as the dizziness (although rather light) still bothers me. Thanks for any advice or suggestion. Sorry that the question I ask here has little to do with the video above. I like and appreciate your channel.

I have a Costco ReSound GN HA pair. I have tried the ReSound app on a iPhone and had some success, BUT--the app kept hanging, and required completely turning off the phone, then restarting phone and app. This was such a bummer that I stopped using the app. Seems the app was not well written and updated for HA's or phones. What I would really like to adjust are the individual freq bands, compression and gain. The feedback suppression works different on L and R HA's Costco only can give us 4 programs, the phone app is flakey.

I would like to be able to control the direction of the sounds I need to hear with my hearing aids to hear and understand speech better. I need to just pick up their speech and amplify it enough to hear some of it and not everything else around me at the same time. And I would like to be able to have more amplification for softer voice and sounds to get them up to my level of hearing. Some people have softer voice i am not able to pick up at all so my hearing aids need to pick it up and amplify it a lot more to help me hear some of it to understand speech and read lips helps me too if my hearing aids can pick up more sounds of speech I can amplify it and understand speech better.

I am testing a Phonak hearing aid for a week. I am OK with doing the dynamic settings but have a problem to save my individual ear volume settings. My right ear needs higher volume than my left ear - once set, the setting changes by itself by adjusting the left ear to high volume whenever I use my phone and it goes back to my saved setting. It sometimes changes when background noises change like going outside. I notice because I hear a swishing sound in my left ear and have to readjust it back again. Cliff, thanks for your great help!! Two questions:
    1. I want to fine-tune the hearing aids with a CUSTOM setting, then make that my "AUTOMATIC" setting (e.g. when the hearing aids are turned ON in the morning). Instead, users have to change from the AUTOMATIC setting to their CUSTOM setting EVERY time they use the hearing aids!! Frustrating. The woman who helps adjust the hearing aids at the hospital is unable to replicate a CUSTOM setting into the AUTOMATIC setting. Instead, she creates some "mix" of setting changes made over the prior week(s) since last meeting with her.
    2. Why does the sound volume commonly alternate between the right and left earpieces? While laying on a bed with NO apparent background noises and no head-movement, the volume will randomly jump back and forth between the two earpieces. Is there something "broken" in the App or "broken" in the synching between the two earpieces? Or, is there some setting that will "lock" the volumes set for each earpiece so that the volumes will not change (unless the user makes adjustments on the mobile phone and/or by touching the back of the earpieces themselves)?

    • @tomuprichard9674

RE 1. I suspect that would require a new chip for the hardware, which would remember the last setting before the device was switched off. That way we wouldn't need to have our smartphone in our hands when we switch on again. It might have to draw power from the batteries even whilst off.

After I had a bit of a moan on the subject of fine-tuning the device, it turned out that the Automatic mode can indeed be tweaked to suit. Maybe the audiologist at Boots (in the UK) had a more sophisticated piece of kit. She did say that whilst we can save a variety of settings ourselves, only she could reset Automatic. Default would be a more sensible name for that setting; Automatic implies it works things out for itself. Forget my previous reply; it got overtaken by this discovery.

@@DrCliffAuD Hello, thanks for your videos. I'm new to hearing aids, so you help me a lot with your videos. I bought a phonak audeo P50-13T last week and can't connect two hearing aids to the program at the same time, writes: "Your hearing aids are not supported by myPhonak".
I can connect to the program only certain devices: left or right. Can you tell me what could be the problem?

I've a HUGE problem with this app.
I am a musician/performer, and a live music listener. When in performing and listening situations, I must adjust the app for that particular situation constantly. Every situation is different. If I perform in multiple situations per week, there's no way I could save dozens of settings, and... even if I return to a specific location, the sound changes, and I need all new settings anyway.
When listening to performers, each performer requires different settings. Again, I cannot save these settings since there is so many.
I notice that if I exit the app, the devices returns to a default setting. I need things to remain the same at times. At a concert, I need a specific setting, and I don't want to be distracted playing with the app everytime it goes back to default. I want it to stay where I put it when I put the phone in my pocket.
I'm angry that I have to deal with this. I find the app lacking in so many ways for my purposes.
I am a skilled listener, know about EQ, compression, etc, since it is my job, my passion.
Can anyone help me? Any suggestions?

I've found that whenever I listen to live music, I have to remove the hearing aids from my ears, otherwise any "Music" settings will make the sounds shrill and unlistenable.

Do you really find that a hearing aid can handle the incredible subtleties of a live performance? Tell the difference between the sounds of, say, the Chicago SO and the Vienna Phil? Are we not listening to the hearing aid rather than the performers?

I find that the music quality it’s usually very good with the phonak ones.. they have a good dynamic range but probably depends on your hearing loss and how your hearing aids fit properly

I agree with Juan !! I want to fine-tune the hearing aids with a Custom setting, then make that my "AUTOMATIC" setting (e.g. when I turn on the hearing aids in the morning). Instead, I have to change from the AUTOMATIC setting to the CUSTOM setting EVERY time I use the hearing aids!! Frustrating. The woman who helps me at the hospital is unable to replicate my CUSTOM setting into the AUTOMATIC settings. Instead, she creates some "mix" of setting changes I have made over the prior week(s) since I last met with her.
