Hi, Bryan. Happy to see you again. After watching all of your travel videos, my wife and I decided to travel across the United States with our model Y starting from Northern California on 09/11. We focused our travel destinations mostly on National Parks and camping within the national campgrounds. The total trip took us 70 days. There were some rough times when we had to setup camp in the dark with pouring rain but other than that, we got to meet some of the nicest people and seen lots of beautiful sites. It was a trip of a lifetime with priceless memories and experience. We wouldn’t and couldn’t have done this trip without your inspiration. Thank you.

Wow, 15mins and you added 50%/150mi! impressive. I liked how you showed the accurate arrival estimate, and nav estimating time needed to get to next stop while charging, I love that part of the Tesla nav & ecosystem... especially the part showing estimate %charge on arrival, updated live as you charge, so *I* can choose when to unplug, to arrive with safety buffer desired (as I'm sure you appreciate w/ cargo box extra drag etc).
Edit: also glad you decided to stop for a charge before camp, when arrival showed low, just in case... always a good idea if destination has a problem, need enough charge to get back to power! and, if tired, the extra break in middle of long drive really helps, one reason I *like* charge stops.

Yep it really charges up fast when you're under 10% to start. I'll admit, while I missed the extra cargo room, I definitely enjoyed the extra range on this trip. Appreciate you watching 😀

That park has gorgeous trees... love how the tesla/google maps has POI even for campgrounds/parks like parking lots and campsites, really helps!
and glad you got a chance to point out camping tips, re camp mode for 12v, and@25:55 reducing charge power below max, for poor outdoor wiring... normally a NEMA 14-50 should be able to handle the 32A, concern is more for folks using the TT30 30A, have to reduce below 24A... always a good idea to set low as possible to still get enough charge in time.

Did you ever hear back about the Stowaway? I actually already own a brand new standard cargo box and swingaway frame that I bought when I thought I was getting a Rav4. Now I'm geting the Model Y.
According to Tesla their 2" receiver has a 160lb. weight limit. The Swingaway frame is 47 lbs, the standard size cargo box is 47 lbs. That leaves 66 lbs. to fill the box with which I think should work for most people's situations as long as you just put the heavier things in the car and the lighter but more voluminous in the cargo box.
Nope. Never heard back from them. Reached out twice. I'm guessing they're a small group that aren't very tech or social media savvy (I'm basing this off their website & social media presence or lack thereof.) Turned out great though as I'm loving the Yakima box and am now working with companies like REI & EXPED which are more established brands with top tier quality products.
As for the weight... you're correct. I use it for lighter, but larger objects like tents, fold up camping chairs, golf clubs, tripods, fishing rods, cooking supplies. I also love that I can cook on top of it and swing it out. For me it's great for camping as that's when I'll actually have it on and when I don't want those things taking up space on the inside. I just want my fridge/freezer in the sub-trunk and my Jackery inside so I have the full bed in the back. I'm in Las Vegas currently and have it off while I'm here, but will be camping next weekend so can't wait to put it to the test.

Another good one Brian thanks for taking us along. And very informative with the info boxes too…Is there a way to know how many kWh it adds with each dollar total? It’s interesting to see that it charges a different amount for apparently different charge speeds, but I tried to look on the Tesla screen but didn’t see the kWh added type of info..like for example when you put $21 or so total, I’m always curious how many total kilowatt hours it added.
Hey Ronny - If you check your account on the web at Tesla and click on charging you can view all that info. Funny thing though is the info it shows is different depending on what state you're in when charging. For instance it now only shows the price per speed when in Georgia, but if I'm in South Carolina it will show amount of kWh added. I agree the amount added is more beneficial, but for some reason they don't show that info for charging in Georgia.
Doesn't your fridge need some ventilation for the motor?
Yep. I've covered this in a few videos, but if you watch my most recent camping video to Mt Whitney or my review of the ICECO fridge you'll see I put 1 inch wood spacers with velcro on them which gives it plenty of airflow. I've kept it on for weeks straight without any issues. One other advantage of using the sub-trunk is how cool it is down there even during summer so it makes it easy for the fridge to regulate temps. This also means it barely uses any power. Sometimes it's zero watts and other times it's like 5 watts. I love it because it keeps it out of the way most of the time since I only need to get to it for a few seconds every few hours at most.

Some nice scenery but not as much free camping here on the east coast. We do like the Blue Ridge Parkway. Let us know if you have an adequate number of charging options on your trip.
For sure. The West is wide open with plenty of great dispersed camping, but the East Coast is always a challenge. I much prefer the West, but am having a great time on my trip so far and more than enough Superchargers. Haven't even had to think about using my CCS adapter yet. Thanks for tuning in 😀
Interested in your testing of a trunk hitch
Yep, me too. From my research it's about a 10% range hit compared to over 25% with the cargo box. I'll for sure do some videos on it, if I end up going that route for a cargo box.

I’m curious if there are any trunk hitches out there that wouldn’t affect autopilot like pulling a trailer does. Being without autopilot for extended trips would probably be a deal breaker for me. But, maybe someone’s figured that out - a lot of creative Tesla owners out there!
@@bluedog9935 I'm pretty sure you can just not turn on Tow Mode and Autopilot works just fine.

Hi Bryan, When you book a spot RV site at campground or RV park, do you need to tel them that your car is a Tesla? Do they allow Tesla Car in RV spot.? If you book a campground with self - paid, for example 2 days. How can people know that your site is not available when you drive your car around and you come back to your site in evening?
RV parks don't allow car camping unfortunately so those aren't an option. For campgrounds no need to tell them, nobody has ever asked and I've talked to many campground hosts and park rangers and all are fine with it. I usually book a tent site or tent site with electrical hookups if I don't have a close by Supercharger. As for the campground... when you self pay you tear off a portion and usually put the dates you're there for so it's then reserved and clip it on the campsite number post. I also usually leave a few inexpensive items like a chair or my shower tent if I plan to be gone for most of the day. Those two things will tell anyone that the spot is already taken. Thanks so much! Mine has been working great and is very easy to put on. It might take you a couple times to get used to how it goes on, but once you do it’s super easy. The one I link to in the description has been great!

Very nice, have you thought about towing a small trailer ?
Oh yeah. I've talked about that in previous videos. I had planned to buy a small travel trailer (approx 3000 lbs), but range took over a 50% hit. That means charging about every 125-150 miles (and that's being generous) and some places that wouldn't even work getting from one Supercharger to the next. Plus you often have to detach the trailer to charge as there aren't pull in's or pull throughs.
Getting a trailer has been my plan the whole time, but unfortunately EV's currently just don't have enough range when towing. The weight seems to be almost irrelevant as it's the wind aerodynamics that make or break it. The performance is fantastic don't get me wrong, but the range is terrible.
Same goes for the Ford Lightning and the Rivian R1T. Both get between 100-150 miles at most when towing even a small trailer. This was one of the reasons I had planned on getting the Cybertruck as the stated range was to be over 500 miles with towing hopefully being close to 250-300, but it's not great looking and who knows what the actual performance and range will be along with pricing and if it ever will actually ship. I mean I think it will probably ship mid to late next year, but anything Elon says you have to take with a grain of salt.
@@bryanhauer I think the most critical part is charging within 100 miles. Not bad if you're guaranteed to find a charging station every 80-100 miles. I just drove 500 miles in tesla Model Y and at least saw 2 to 3 new tesla charging stations being built.

With the rear hatch up and open, does it attract bugs/ mosquitoes? Do you ever throw a mosquito net over it while open?
Also, I spoke with the service people in Dallas and they stated the car has a built in surge protector, Have you heard that as well?

Thanks so much! You are correct. The Tesla does have built in surge protection, but the one I was using also protects against high/low voltage levels, fault detection, reverse polarity, open neutral, and other wiring issues. I also plan to use it with a trailer so for me would have two uses. I don't think it's absolutely necessary as I camped without one for over a year and never had any issues, but just decided to get one for peace of mind as well as for use with a travel trailer. Nice trip and coverage, I might have to try that location, never been. Have you ever been refused access to 50amp at an RV site because you have a Tesla and they know that you’ll charge up? (I’ve heard non-confirmed rumors.)

As for camping with a Tesla... what I've found the last 18 months doing this is as long as it's a campground nobody has said a thing and I've often talked to rangers or camp hosts and nobody cares at all.
Now RV parks are a different story. I haven't found an RV park that will allow EV's. They all say they don't allow them. My guess is the policy was put into place well before people were traveling around in Tesla's and their main point for the policy was to prevent people from camping in their cars for long periods as it would attract homeless people looking for inexpensive ways to stay long-term as a location with electrical. Hopefully that policy changes with so many new EV options coming out, but wouldn't hold my breath.
Nobody so far has cared that I was charging at a campground though and many campground hosts have walked up to me and chatted about the car while it was charging and didn't seem to care about the extra electricity being used.
Cool video. Skidaway Island looks nice, although you could tell they are going through a drought. The per-minute pricing at Superchargers is really bizarre because it varies so much. I've never seen that before. Usually it's just a flat per-minute rate.
At 22:30, is the 32 amp limit imposed by your car or your mobile charger? It should be able to accept 40 amps on a 50 amp circuit.
Agree on the pricing. First time I had seen that too. It seemed to be a Georgia thing because South Carolina was per minute pricing.
I believe that’s the car limiting the amps as I have gotten more previously.
Actually I just looked back at my Tesla Charging at a Campground video from a year ago and wasn't using a surge protector and that time to the car auto set itself to 32AMPS. This time 32 made the post run hot and tripped the circuit so I lowered to 24 and that was fine, but it was 32 on that 50AMP hookup as well. czcams.com/video/V4V-Ji1bzw0/video.html
@@bryanhauer Oh okay, that's interesting. You should be able to set it to a max of 40 amps, I guess the car isn't allowing you? I'm only asking because on the screen it says "32/32 A" instead of "32/40 A" which appears to be a hard limit of 32 A. But I know a lot of campgrounds have old/poorly maintained wiring, so you might be forced to set a lower limit.

Tesla’s already have that built in so there’s no benefit. For trailers/RV’s it’s still recommended.

Hey Bill - After more research you actually don't need to use the surge protector as the Tesla has all those protections built in. They're still great for RV's, but no need for the Tesla. Did I miss what happened to your glass roof?
I think I mentioned it briefly a couple times. I know the first time I noticed it was on the way back from Vegas to Nashville in the summer when a rock hit it. Then a few weeks later I noticed a larger crack towards the back, but am unsure how that one happened. Showed it to Tesla and they said I'd need a replacement glass roof. My insurance covered it $2200 and my deductible was $100. Took about half a day once I dropped it off. You will need to cover the cost and get reimbursed by your insurance as the top glass has to be replaced by Tesla themselves and Tesla like other car manufacturers doesn't work directly with insurance companies. This probably isn't the case if you have Tesla Insurance, but I currently don't have that.

You’ve got the megamat auto recommendation here but in a video a month ago you suggested most comfortable mattress to be the one from formytesla with the 5 inch self inflated? Which do you r3commend most and why? Felt like megamat stores much smaller. Please do a detailed comparison if you don’t mind.., have you used the tescamp version?
Will definitely be doing a comparison video at some point. Both are very comfortable with the big difference being how much smaller the Exped one rolls up and stores. Both are great options though.

@@AliSatchu For comfort I'd go with the one from FMT, if you want it to store away in the sub-trunk or frunk the Exped is a better choice.

still wondering which sunroof cover you use when camping. you said you don't like evannex because of the suction cups. do you still use the evannex and just suffer through the suction cups or have you found a better alternative at this point?
Here is the one I use for the top glass. It's been great! It's pure black so keeps all the sunlight out and barely any noticeable sag. It’s one piece.It uses clips to keep it up and they stay in place even when driving so using it during the hot summer will work too. I noticed they're low on stock right now, but it's really nice. Fair question... I simply wanted to show how it works when I don't have access, but yes of course that would be easiest. I also was losing light and didn't want to search my frunk for the extension cable.
Does the jackery charge at the same time if your charging the Tesla?
I always leave mine plugged in to the Tesla so it’s essentially always topping off the Jackery. I kind of use it as a pass through.
Another question. Those portable fridges are like $500. Is that worth it vs just using a normal good cooler?
Totally worth it if you're going out for more than a weekend. Sometimes when I'm out West I'll be on the road camping & hiking for a couple weeks at a time and it's super convenient to just grocery shop and leave food in there for days and even a week and never have to worry about refreshing it with ice. I use the Govee wifi thermometer to track and get push notifications if the fridge turns off or goes above a specified temp. I'd say if you're just planning a weekend camping trip a regular ice cooler works just fine.

I'll do a bit more research on them. I see they announced it would cost $3600, but now they're selling it for almost $9000 which is way too much. You gave me a good idea for a video though 👍🏻

The one I found was EVSolarKits, but that project is a giant red flag of fraud due to no refunds even if they don't ever ship, inflated price of almost $9k plus items design is terrible. Hey Joel - I got them from Evannex. They've been great! I should clarify... every window, but the top glass is great. The top glass uses suction cups which aren't needed for the other windows and getting them to stay is a bit of a challenge. The rest of the windows are fantastic! To cover up the holes (where the suction cups would go) I used black gorilla tape and that's worked great. I did a review of them in a past video if you search my channel. I see Evannex just started an affiliate program recently so will update this comment with a link at some point soon.

@@bryanhauer sweet thanks! Been looking to possibly get an electric vehicle, i know Teslas are the "rock" in the ev's but Ford has some good ones too not 100% though lol Loved your video btw! I travel to theme parks a lot and car camping saves tons of money on hotels and what not.
@@skeletor212 Thanks. Lots of great new EV's out there. My main issue with suggesting anything other than Tesla doesn't actually have anything to do with the cars, but more to do with the charging network & infrastructure.
I'd like to actually buy something other than Tesla for my next car (thinking Cadillac Lyriq), but the problem is if I plan to travel Tesla's charging network is a 9 out of 10, while the rest of the 3rd parties like Electrify American, ChargePoint, EVGO and others are like a 3 out of 10. It's quite terrible! They're super unreliable and often don't work at all. I'd honestly say that at least 50% of all 3rd party charging stations in the US don't work. Like if there's 8 chargers at a station... at least half are unusable. I'm actually probably being generous too as the ones that do work almost never give the full power they're supposed to. It's probably more like 70% don't work properly.
If you plan to charge at home 90% of the time and rarely travel, I'd say go for Ford, GM, Lucid, Rivian etc... All are great! But if you plan to travel, it'll be a nightmare for the next 2-3 years for EV's unless you're using a Tesla. It's unfortunate, but true.

While I appreciate the feedback, it's the exact opposite of 90% of my viewers. Most ask for longer videos. What I've found is younger crowd wants shorter videos (seems to be TikTok & Shorts influence), while older crowd enjoys the longer videos. My preferred sweet spot is around 20 minutes, but it may fluctuate largely depending on the content. I understand that's not for everyone and I'm perfectly fine with that as I can't make everyone happy.
@@bryanhaueryeah, I’d say 20-25 is a pretty sweet spot, plus you can use programs to make shorts out of the video if you want so you have content for both crowds.
