  • Hello CZcamsrs .
Nikon Z6 and Z7 full frame mirrorless finally arrived !!! Are they good or Nikon blow it again??? Let`s talk a little bit about the details and let`s see if they did a good job or NOT????
The Nikon Z 7 and Z 6 are equipped with a new backside illumination, Nikon FX-format CMOS sensor with focal-plane phase-detection AF pixels, and the latest image-processing engine, EXPEED 6.
The Z 7 has 45.7 effective megapixels, and supports a standard sensitivity range of ISO 64-25600. In combination with NIKKOR Z lenses, the camera achieves an outstanding level of sharpness and detail, all the way to the edges of the image. The Nikon Z 6 is an all-purpose FX-format camera with 24.5 effective megapixels, and supports the wide range of ISO 100-51200 standard sensitivities. With superior performance at high sensitivities and full-frame 4K UHD movie recording with full pixel readout, the Z 6 responds to a variety of needs, such as shooting in dimly lit environments, and movie recording.
1.Equipped with a new backside illumination Nikon FX-format CMOS sensor with focal-plane phase-detection AF pixels
A backside illumination CMOS sensor, with focal-plane phase-detection AF pixels, has been adopted for both the Z 7 and the Z 6. The Z 7 has 45.7 effective megapixels, and supports the ISO 64-25600 range of standard sensitivities (reduction to the equivalent of ISO 32 and expansion to the equivalent of ISO 102400 is also possible). The Z 6 has a 24.5 effective megapixels, and supports a broad range of standard sensitivities, from ISO 100-51200 (additional reduction to the equivalent of ISO 50 and expansion to the equivalent of ISO 204800).
2.A hybrid AF system with focus points covering approximately 90% of the imaging area
The Z 7 has 493 focus points* and the Z 6 has 273 focus points*, enabling broad coverage of approximately 90% of the imaging area both horizontally and vertically. This hybrid AF system uses an algorithm optimized for the FX-format sensor, and automatically switches between focal-plane phase-detection AF and contrast-detect AF to achieve focus. The use of NIKKOR Z lenses further increases AF accuracy with both still images and movies.
3.The new EXPEED 6 image-processing engine for sharp and clear imaging, and new functions that support creative imaging expression
The Z 7 and Z 6 are equipped with the new EXPEED 6 image-processing engine. Employing the superior resolving power of NIKKOR Z and NIKKOR F lenses, subjects are rendered more sharply than ever before. Noise is also effectively reduced.
4.An electronic viewfinder that utilizes Nikon's superior optical and image-processing technologies to offer a clear and natural view
The electronic viewfinder adopted for the Z 7 and Z 6 is comfortable and easy to use, comparable to optical viewfinders. Both cameras are equipped with an electronic viewfinder for which an approximately 3690k-dot OLED panel has been adopted.
5.An ergonomic design unique to Nikon that enables intuitive operation
The Z 7 and Z 6 have inherited the superior operability that Nikon has cultivated over the years through its development of cameras. The bodies are compact, while boasting a firm grip that is easy to hold, and buttons such as that for the sub-selector, AF-ON, ISO, and exposure compensation are all placed so that they can be operated swiftly and easily.
6.Movie functions such as 10-bit N-Log that captures a wide dynamic range, and timecoding, responding to professional needs
The Z 7 and Z 6 support recording of not only full-frame 4K UHD (3840 x 2160)/30p movies using the FX-based movie format, but also Full-HD/120p movies. Sharper 4K UHD movies are made possible, using the full-pixel readout.*1 Additionally, Active D-Lighting, electronic vibration reduction, and focus peaking can be used with 4K UHD and Full-HD movie recording. Nikon's original N-Log can also be used with 10-bit*2 HDMI output. The cameras utilize extensive color depth and twelve-stop, 1300% dynamic range to record a wealth of tone information from highlights and shadows for more effective color grading. Timecode support*3 makes synchronizing video and sound from multiple devices easier. Additionally, the control ring built into NIKKOR Z lenses can be used to quietly and smoothly adjust settings such as aperture and exposure compensation.
    7.Nikon's first*1 in-camera vibration reduction with approx. 5.0-stop*2 effectiveness

I am not a Nikon (or any other) fanboy, but I think this is what happened: They proudly announced the cameras beforehand, but could not complete all the design modifications in time. They should have taken more time, but they did not want to push the date further as they have already generated too much hype.
    (1) They put in XQD (upgradable to CFExpress by firmware update) card, not SD card, as they found SD cards to be too slow. However, XQD cards are larger in size, so to put in two slots, one has to either make the body taller, or put two XQD cards side by side (make the body deeper). IMO opinion they did not had time to redesign the body for two XQD cards. The buffer in these two cameras is inadequate.
    (2) They did not think of a new larger battery in time (what is adequate for DSLR is NOT adequate for mirrorless, as EVF/LCD draws much higher current). When they thought of it, it was too late to order a new battery. they just created a new version of the old to enable USB charging.
    (3) They did not have time to perfect algorithm for eye-detect autofocus, so they did only face-detect.
    (4) We do not yet know whether Z6/Z7 will overheat or not.
    (5) The two Fn1 & Fn2 buttons in front cannot be reached by thick fingers with lens attached (according to DPReview).
BTW Sony had exactly the same problems initially, which they fixed in later iterations. So hopefully Nikon will release new versions after an year or two to address these problems.
Thank God the new AF system for stills/video is much better (according to DPReview better than A7III).

Some good arguments, but other Nikon cameras do have XqD and SD card slot so a few mm of space is not the issue here. New battery require different discharge profile and thus main board and facility has to be different than DSLR and I think they just re-used stuff from dslr and did not put anything new in there.Buffer is a joke ,while they have a great one on d500 and few other models. All in all they will never changed, protecting product A vs product B. I hope they will go out of the business due to one reason ,they never listen the customer.

It's not realistic to expect for Nikon Z6 to drop their price below 2K considering it appears to be a successor to the D750 (I think it was $2200 when it first came out?), and the specs are better, except for battery life, but that may have been inaccurate. We will see if it all plays out, I hope it turns out to be a good camera. Once card slot is not a big deal for my needs, but I can surely see it being an issue for wedding peeps. One thing I like is the 90% autofocus point coverage, which is one of the things I don't like about my D750 with limited coverage.

It might not be realistic for them but definitely it will cost them a lot. 😂😂😂😂 We'll see how it goes but I'm not really optimistic. This was the last drop for me with Nikon. I'm not investing anymore at all in Nikon gear. But that's only my opinion.

This cameras is for existing Nikon users and seems to be good enough to satisfy their needs in terms of a smooth transition to the mirror less system.Regarding two memory cards and eye focus seems to be not a big deal for Nikon to put it up in their next Z camera ;The important thing is that they managed to bring up a fantastic EVF, F mount lens adaptability,Sensor stabilization,Video capabilities , Z mount for the future possibilities and auto focus in place in full frame considering this is their first baby in the new system.
The drawbacks are a room for improvement and we know they can do it so quickly in the future if they are willing to do so.
This cameras might be a disappointment for people to decide on whether to change to Nikon from Sony/Canon/ any other manufacturer but the real intention for this cameras is to safely and smoothly move the existing Nikon shooters out there.

Someone should invent a a dual SD card so we shouldn't have to have dual SD card slots. It could be double ended and automatically transfer data into it's second on board card. Then if one end fails we should be able to flip it around and retrieve the data from the contacts on the other end.

I agree with the need for dual cards, but a lot of wedding photographers in the states and fashion photographers too dropped NIkon and went for the A7R2, despite no native lenses and a single card slot. Figure that one out. I ran market research for a very large corporation, a fascinating wonderful experience. We customers are just as dumb as the companies it seems. I love them and hate them in equal measure. They got many things right which concerned me ( IBIS, good video AF at last, touch screen, excellent EVF, top e-ink display ) but then they screwed it up with the very things I took for granted on a Nikon which I automatically never gave a thought would be omitted! One card slot...what! A battery that can barely shoot a few hundred shots? When, as Nikon shooters have we ever concerned ourselves over these two issues? We've come to expect that Nikon gives us these features as standard ( D7500 not withstanding ). So I'm really in a quandary. In some ways I'm optimistic about the direction Nikon are going, having protected legacy users to a point in offering what should be a good adapter but also futureproofing us with the Z mount. Then they kick us in the nuts by omitting features that might prevent Nikon selling these bodies and having no future at all! Now all of this is really not going to affect me in any way because I intend to stick with my DSLRs for at least a couple more years anyway, mirrorless or not. Oh and I won't be getting either the Z6 or Z7 for another reason.....I can't afford them anyway lol. Understandable. But most of us on this side of the screen are not wedding or event photographers. Yes, one card slot was a mistake, but I'd rather have the superb build quality, superior ergonomics and the fantastic EVF of the Nikon. I am not convinced of Sony reliability, but I'm sure the Z6/7 will last many years. Their lens road map is very good too. @Saurat, XQD cards APPEAR more robust (though several times costlier than SD), but that is not its strong point. It is many times faster than SD, so buffers will be cleared a lot faster than SD in 9fps/12fps shooting. UHS I max is 104 MB/sec, UHS II max is 312 MB/sec. (When UHS III finally comes out, they are estimated 624 MB/sec which will be quite adequate). XQD version 1.0 max. speed is 500 MB/sec, version 2.0 is 1,000 MB/sec.

Unfortunately no they didn't. We could say that if they would charge 1400$ and 2500$ for their cameras. Because these cameras does not worth more with a single penny. They are good cameras don't get me wrong, but not fot a 2000/3500$ price point. Believe me this is not hype. Why should we pay more for something when we can pay less??? Just because it is Nikon??? I don't give a crap on brand. They want to fool us because after 5 years of waiting they release a camera with mediocre features and premium price point. It's not a problem if you can't make better, just don't want to fool us again like many other times before. I don't care about brands, but when someone thinks that I'm stupid enough to buy that crap that makes me crazy. If those cameras were 1400/2500$ I would say fair enough they have to start somewhere. But acting like they are the boss and giving us BS that is not for me mate. I really respect your opinion and I don't expect you think the same way about this, but that's the way I feel. No matter how it feels in the hand and what kind of photos it takes, it is still an inferior camera for that price point. But I will try it out soon at Photokina.

@@miloradkaravidin8818 😂😂😂 did you see my video about the X-H1?? Definitely not. The X-T2 is the best deal at the moment. 1000$ for a pro grade camera which has the dynamic range and low light performance of a full frame camera almost. Very tiny difference. But not the X-H1. That camera worth maybe 1500-1600$ max

SD cards and XQD cards are not the same. The form factors are different, the electronics are different and it is quite possible that it was not easy to fit 2 XQD slots in the camera. Further, the reliability of XQD and SD cards is from what I understand an order of magnitude at least different. This means that the likelihood of failure for XQD is very low. Given that, and also likely that Nikon will eventually release a bigger form factor camera for the ‘Professional’ user, I don’t think that it detracts from the camera to have only a single card slot. The card slot is designed for upgrade to CFExpress. Delkin is coming out with a line of industrial CFexpress cards, rugged and with built in life cycle management. These cards would be industrial grade and designed for extremely high MTBF ( Mean Time Between Failure ). Mostly that is likely to obviate the requirement for dual card slots in all but the most mission critical applications. I think it is premature to criticize Nikon before we see real actual failures of XQD cards in the field. If Nikon had come out with only a single SD card slot, I would have been highly critical also.

You are right about the difference between the XQD and SD. But we don't know if it will be so good as they say because it is a new product and the only company who produces XQD card is Sony..... 🤔🤔🤔🤔 Does that say anything to you? If you are right than maybe it will be fine. But would you risk your reputation on MAYBE??? The price point is too high for single card slot XQD or SD it does not matter. If it would be a 1500$ camera I would not complain. But a 3500$ price??? They are stupid that's it. It was a big mistake in my opinion. And hey we do not have to agree, that is my opinion. 😂😂😂

The XQD slot in the Z camera's is a firmware upgrade for CFexpress. CF express will be supported by ProGrade ( formerly Lexar ) and Delkin and also others. It will not be a Sony only proprietary format. Therefore, Nikon will no longer need to depend on Sony in the future once these new cards are released. They also allow much faster data throughput and higher reliability than any version of SD card. We have to see if this format succeeds in the long run. However, it does offer many benefits including higher reliability than SD cards.
For the vast majority of people who are going to buy this the Z6 or Z7, they are not Pro photographers. It will not matter to them. Lots of camera 'fantasists' will spend there time online criticizing the camera (especially Sony fanboys) and not take the time to really take better pictures. Camera specs are on the whole not that relevant unless you are really really good.
I am an amateur photographer who is well able to afford the Z7 plus 24 -70 as a hobby. It cost me less than a business class return ticket to Europe/Far East from Dubai, which I fly on average every month. People like me are the vast majority of customers who will buy this camera. We really don't need the extra card slot. Also most of the amateur fanboys who are shouting the loudest don't really need an extra slot for the low use they get.
Nikon will eventually come out with a full featured Pro camera with a larger body, more buttons and Dual card slots and a lot extra. Till then, there is the D500 and D850.
I don't agree that they need to price this camera low. They need to make as much money as they can from the rich amateurs that are going to buy this camera. That is why they are selling the Z7 before the Z6. I would have bought the Z6 if they came out at the same time. As it is, I just preordered the Z7 and they are pretty much all sold out on Amazon. There are a lot of people who don't mind to spend the money just because they are Nikon shooters have a bunch of lenses and can afford the camera.
Nikon will attack the volume market and the Pro's later once they have milked all the people who can afford to buy these camera's without much thought.
I do appreciate your channel and its content and I very rarely chat on youtube. We all have our own opinions but I think these camera's will sell like crazy and Nikon will wait till the second round to get camera's that really try to beat Sony and then most of us will buy again. On the other hand maybe everyone will switch to Sony. We shall see.

@@sundeeprao9661 I am really curious if it will happen like you say. I don't know where are you from but here in Europe and Asia I don't think you can find many people who can afford a Z7 5000-6000 euro kit (with just 2 lenses) for Hobby. I think we can count on my hands and I'm not even joking. But we will see I suppose. In my opinion Nikon is not going to do great if they do stupid moves like this.

I am from all over the place. However, now I live in Dubai. If it is two native lenses or three, is no matter. Many buyers will be those who have lots of Nikon glass. Further, you need to look at the price from a different point of view. Yes you buy at around 3,000 to 4,000 $ but some part of that is recoverable if necessary on resale or as a gift to someone. Try to sell an older Olympus, no buyers ! For a lot of buyers the fact that it is Nikon and they know and trust the brand and that they have some lenses and they know how to work with it is enough. As far as affordability, many people in the world have expensive hobbies. The middle class all over the world is expanding. Do you remember that at one time the Japanese were traveling all over the world with cameras and snapping everything. Well, now we have smartphones but a certain percentage of people still like cameras. The Chinese and Indians are now beginning to travel, a lot more customers than in the past. A lot of them have bought in to Nikon at the entry level. However, badly it performs compared to Sony or others, the cameras are enough for a large amount of people to buy them without a thought. Either as they can afford or because they want it and have Nikon glass or they are familiar with Nikon. Next round, Nikon will have to up their game or they will lose. For now I believe the camera will be sold out just like the D850. We shall see. If I am wrong I will be happy to admit as such to you in three months.

I agree completely with you! But wait, Nikon is bringing a professional camera in the future with two card slots and so on for 4.500 or more . But for this money we can get almost a Fujifilm GFX or something like that. They are really stupid. May be they can retain the Nikon users that did not change already to Sony but nothing else.
