    I have two large plasmas (LGs) - and yeah, they are built to last - and the picture quality still looks great and I can guarantee you they'll outlast the junk being manufactured today. Bit heavy, maybe not nearly as thin - but I like the years I've gotten out of these AND they're still going strong - one after abut 8 years. Paid $100 each USED. Money VERY well spent! Good review!

    I still have a Fugitsu plasma vision W 50in that works perfectly it’s just gorgeous. I believe it was one of the first plasma TV’s ever made. TV cost something like $10k when it was new. I got a Q80B 85in a few months ago and it is just a gorgeous powerhouse of a TV I love watching it it’s good at everything and gets beautifull bright. I’ve had 3 Samsung LEDs over the years and have had just great luck with them. I still have a 55in Samsung led from 2010 one of the first models ever made it’s not even a smart tv. Still using it almost daily 13 years later kids play games and watch movies on it and it still looks great and gets really bright. The plasma days were such an exciting time for TV’s I’ve had a few plasma’s come and go but the fugitsu is a straight relic a real gem

    I had a mid-range (or lower?) Panasonic S60 plasma that I adored. It had some unfortunate rainbow artifacting when I turned my head or blinked rapidly, but I mostly got used to it. The motion clarity was great though, and was as close to a CRT as I’ve seen. Unfortunately I don’t have it anymore. I’m sure it gets killed by OLED with contrast but I haven’t seen a TV get as good motion, especially with scrolling images/content.

  • @2kBofFun

    I've basically come to a point that I don't care about new tech. The stuff from 5-10 years ago has become so cheap, high quality and abbundant, that you are a fool to spend premium on the new stuff.
    For example I got a 50" plasma with no burn-in for 75 bucks, a 2009 MacMini for 25 bucks, and a top of the line Onkyo AV receiver 7x200W for 100 bucks. Blu Rays at goodwill are like 1-2 bucks. A 2015 MacBook Pro is 250 bucks. Every item functions perfectly fine today, and combined they give a really nice experience. The dude I bought the plasma from was really impressed by the plasma he was selling: he used it 10 year without proper setup and looked at a dull image all those years. I tweaked the contrast, enabled full colour gamut, and popped in Lego Batman, and he was seriously stunned. Same with clothes. I get everything at thrift stores nowadays. There is enough used stuff for everybody and Red sea terror should deliver 0 harm to world economy. We live in abbundance of everything. Now lets put us what we already have to good use, and stop making more new crap quality junk.

    • @MsMarco6
      @MsMarco6 Před 10 měsíci +5

      4k Plasma was simply not comercially viable and nothings changed in that regard.
      The pixels could only be made so small which is why I don't think there was ever a 32" 1080p Plasma (though I could be wrong about that).
      If that wasn't possible then neither would a 65" 4k set, it's a fundamental issue with the technology no amount of innovation can overcome.
      Add on to that the proliferation of HDR and it's a wrap for Plasma due to it's limited peak brightness.
      It's no coincidence the last Plasmas were made just before the first HDR tv's.
      Even if Plasmas kicks ass with SDR content that's not really gonna matter for much longer, heck it's only really CZcams were SDR is stil the norm.
      Plasma had it's advantages but it also had it's issues.
      The advantages of Plasma can be added to other technologies (the emissive nature of OLED and the motion clarity of PWM LCD).
      But Plasmas issues can never be overcome so it went the way of CRT, which had it's own advantages over even Plasma and could be made 4k.
      So if anything CRT would be a more compatible option for modern content.

      @@MsMarco6That isn't true. The companies weren't willing to invest in mass production of latest tech of new factories because the competitors were pumping out crappy LCD TVs, it didn't make business sense to them investing in losing profits due to vast numbers of inferior TV's being sold for huge profits. Panasonic and Samsung agreed to stop making Plasma TV's and Pioneer followed.
      Retailers simply pushed inferior tech that was less reliable because that is what returns them repeat customers on a regular basis. Everytime I went into a shop and looked at a Plasma TV 99% of the time staff would try to drag me away and buy an LCD just as expensive or more so that has huge chunks of pixels floating all over the place when all I wanted was a demo on the high quality Plasma TV's. And this was a repeated theme all over the world!
      Pioneer and even Samsung division of Plasma TV's were losing profits to the sheer quantity of inferior numbers of LCD TV sales so they eventually decided to stop making Plasma TV's altogether because of the lack of demand and consumer ignorance, inferior products sold very easily and that was why Plasma TVs stopped being made. Retailers preferred selling cheap junk in huge quantities than high quality Plasma TVs that lasted more years and didn't need replacement as often. We still have a 2006 Plasma TV that runs just as well as when brand new.
      People are ignorant and preferred to buy cheap and nasty Sony LCD TVs than Plasma TV's for a few hundred more. If Plasma TV's had as much investment then it would be cheaper and is still superior tech that was first developed in the 1960's but neglected by investors with most manufacturers fixing investments and research into LCD screens. There was a 100 inch Plasma developed which weighs half a ton. I still prefer Plasma TV's over all modern flagship models. Modern TV's lack the qualities Plasma has. Now all we get is disposable junk. Retailers love planned obsolescence.

    Well lets be fair here. This plasma was likely heavily used which causes a reduced brightness (that's prob why the bright highlights arent quite what you were wanting). The motion looks more juttery not because its worse, but because plasma tv's are an impluse technology therefore they strobe very fast to produce less unwatned motion blur (ghosting) for use cases like gaming. The reason the QLED LCD tv looks to have smoother motion is simply due to the sample and hold tech thats used in modern displays that produces unwanted motion blur (because of image persistance in the eye). And the banding problem is a non issue because almost all SDR content is 8 bit anyway not 10 bit, so the 10 bit panel on the QLED will only really help in cases where the content was designed with 10 bit color (such as HDR). So the only real wins for the QLED are HDR support, and higher brightness (when viewed from a content perspective at least because they are more effecient in power consumption and are much lighter). Also the plasma is going to look worse in a well lit room due to the grey glass with no polarzier, therefore the light from the room can wash out the blacks. And both tv's were not calibrated in this comparison as you can tell because the white points are completely different. This can change a lot of the image and isnt due to the Plasma producing worse colors, but is due to the settings on the tv not being set the same way as the QLED lcd.

    I've been using a Samsung PN42B430 for a TV hooked up to my computer. It's not my main screen but it works for watching stuff, or the odd game. One thing it fails miserably at is upscaling or down scaling to non native resolutions. It just ruins the image and motion quality to a point that I only ever run it in it's native 768p resolution at 75hz which it runs fantastic in. It's surprisingly good at non competitive video games, things like shadow of war/Mordor Or GTA. It may not look as nice as my 1440p monitor but if I use AMD's or the in game super resolution setting then It cleans it up rather nicely and you don't really notice very often that it's only 768p. The feature I love most about this TV is it's rugged center swivel stand it is a far better design then what modern Tv's are using as stands. I want to eventually get a 4k 120hz one that has good scaling so I can pick and choose my resolution more. But for now I have yet to find a TV that would fit in it's current space better then the Samsung PN42B430 Plasma TV has been doing.

    Our 8 year old plasma, the last in production from LG had already been retired to the bedroom after upgrading to OLED in the lounge. Roll on 1.5 years, the picture is just way too dark despite the nice colouring, couple that with energy price hikes it is time to put it into permanent retirement. We can barely watch dark scenes in tv shows and films. I would say that HDR is the game changer more than screen resolution even. Despite its inky blacks and natural colouring, plasmas lack of HDR ability, its ageing and fading display and high energy consumption doesn't work for us in 2023, we have just ordered a QLED for the bedroom.

I am not sure about the banding on the Samsung plasma, I don't see it on my Panasonic plasma from 2009. My Panasonic plasma is my living room TV and the picture is still incredible, as long as it is nighttime...LOL. While the plasma definitely has its strong points, I was pretty sure that modern LCD panels could compete. One thing that I appreciate about the plasma is its screen uniformity. I notice uniformity problems on every LCD I have looked at, and I don't like it at all. In addition, plasma does a great job with colors and motion. I'm still a plasma fan.

    I think it would come down to the type of content you like to watch.. Sports would look better on the plasma... 4k HDR movies will of course look better on the QLED.. Also I think older 1080p/720p might look better on the Plasma.. It really depends on the specific QLED tho many modern QLED still struggle to up convert a low res signal to 4k..... In the plasma case it either won't have to upconvert at all or not nearly as much as the 4k..

      in brightness yes but that was always the case due to the backlighting technology of LCD TVs, on the other hand in terms of contrast, it is false! Panasonic plasma TVs without forgetting of course the Pioneer Kuro plasmas have a much better contrast than the LCD and QLED TVs of the moment! I have two Panasonic 55st and 65vt60 plasma TVs as well as a Panasonic 55jz1500 OLED TV, having put the plasma side by side against the OLED, personally I prefer the general rendering of the plasma for films and the OLED for games 4k videos.

  • @Stoddardian
    @Stoddardian Před 3 měsíci

    The motion clarity of a plasma is still vastly superior. Most plasmas have a persistence of 4ms. QLEDs with 60fps@60Hz have a persistence of 16ms. Even TVs with 120fps@120Hz Still have a persistence of 8ms. In other words, you would need TVs with 240fps@240Hz to get to the motion clarity of a plasma. We're not there yet. And it gets even worse. In order to get that motion clarity you need 240fps content, which is only available for the most powerful gaming computers. You can forget about 240fps movies or TV shows. That's never going to happen. This is the fundamental flaw of sample-and-hold displays like QLEDs or OLEDs. Plasmas however were like CRTs. They were impulse displays, which means they didn't need high frame rate content to generate clear motion. On a plasma a 24fps movie or a 30fps video game looked like 240fps when panning the camera. That's the beauty of impulse displays.

      The blacks are good, but the screen coating is very reflective and the panel has a greyish appearance in a lit room. I can tell you that in a somewhat darkened room, the plasma contrast vastly exceeds IPS. But if the sun falls on the panel, you have serious problems. An LCD will work better as the brightness is higher, and the matte black coating takes away most glare.
