I watch this and it makes me want to cry for todays children what they are missing is sad.
I just saw on my nightly news local schools that aren’t having Halloween parties or parades. So sad 🎃👻

Im 21 and ive never even really celebrated halloween. My family just never did anything for holidays as a kid and i was just kept inside. Once i was grown i was too depressed to start lol
I grew up in the early 70s in a very small town where everybody knew everybody, so there was never any fear about hitting all the houses on Halloween. The only scary thoughts entering our minds was having a house run out of candy before we got there! What great times!
Blame the mass media and the fear mongering by overblowing child abduction.
90% of abducted kids are by a parent in a custody battle; it should really be called "parent danger" instead of "stranger danger". The next 8% is a know adult of the family. Less than 2% of abductions are actually done by a "stranger".
This is INSANE.
Wish we could go back to those fun innocent days.

Don't forget there was the one family that gave out small boxes of raisins. "Loved' those raisins.
To this day, I still dress up as Charlie Brown with a sheet full of holes and a bag full of rocks. The parents get a big kick out of it, but the biggest kick they get is when I lift the sheet. I'm still dressed as Charlie Brown with the Zig Zag Shirt and a bald head. LOL "I GOT A ROCK!!!" lol I remember once in the 80s my Sister dressed up as a BOX OF TYLENOL. lol

Back in the 80s there was a big scare where boxes of Tylenol had been tampered with and everyone was ordered to remove the product from their shelves to prevent anyone else from being poisoned by Cyanide. It prompted the overkill use of the Tamperproof Safety Seals we see on everything today. Look up Tylenol Cyanide, I'm sure there are articles about it somewhere on the Web.

I was a 70s Halloween kid. So much fun. Back then Halloween costumes and merchandise would not appear in any of the stores until sometime in October, and we couldn't wait to go buy our masks and costumes. There would be one costume dress-up day allowed in school, and then trick or treating always took place on the evening of October 31st, regardless of what day of the week it fell on. We would never start until it got dark and would stay out wandering and going door to door for hours. Pranks would consist of soaping windows and sometimes throwing eggs. The parents stayed home for the most part and didn't worry about the kids being out alone, unlike today. It was a different time.

I was a '70's kid also. A great time indeed. Sad that because of some sick b*stards that the holiday has been so diminished.
I was a 70's child as well. I remember running with friends from house to house in the night, costumes flying, shouts of joy and laughter ringing out. So much fun!! One parent would generally chaperone the group. And oh, all that delicious candy!
Growing up in a semi-rural area, we would raid cornfields and spent hours in our secret hideout shelling corn. Mischief Night was when we'd throw corn at cars, soap windows and play Ding-Dong-Ditch.

So many 50's memories with neighbors that made homemade treats, brownies, and we handed out Kleenex with small candy treats inside tied with ribbons or orange or black pipe cleaners. Mom and Dad checked the candy, my Mom made the costumes, we went out for hours and walked at least two miles collecting candy in a pillowcase. No danger, just fun.

Great memories for sure. Especially knowing how tired we’d get from carrying the pillow cases full of candy. But never tired enough to fill up on it when we got home! 😂 We had it so good back then. 😊

I was born in 53. We really didn't have parties. Home made costumes and we went all over the neighborhood to fill our bags with loot. Cardboard Unicef boxes included. We had a huge Ragamuffin parade that was awesome. Real cowboys and indians in full regalia along with Big Balloons (like Macys parade) and bands. Great time to be a kid.
I was also born in 1953. I had forgotten about the UNICEF boxes! I can only remember a Halloween party one year in grade school. It was at night in the gym and the principal was dressed in a costume. We all sat in a big circle and when the lights were turned off things were passed around like a bowl of spaghetti was supposed to be guts, peeled grapes were eyeballs, etc. That's all I remember. I lived in New Hampshire, and we often trick-or-treated during a light snowfall. My parents had a tradition when kids came to our door for treats to invite them in and give them cider and donuts while making a big deal about trying to guess who they were under their costumes. Everyone loved that and to this day I enjoy having cider and donuts around Halloween. My mom's special treat were popcorn balls, until it got so parents wouldn't let kids eat homemade goodies. Those were the days!
I was born in 1956 and remember the UNICEF boxes too! It was so much fun to trick or treat back then, no matter when Halloween fell, it was trick or treat time, many times on a school night. Our parents sent us out with pillow cases for our treats and I remember getting full size candy bars, apples and homemade cookies. None of which our parents worried about. I also remember the smell of burning leaves, alot of people burned their leaves back then, they weren't picked up in the street like today. Those were good and fun days. ~sigh~

Halloween was great in the 60s! We went trick or treating w/out parents. Everyone was out. Yards & streets were filled with kids! Now a days, so few kids go out ☹️☹️
As a grandparent now I see a lot of churches having Trunk or Treat as a youth fundraiser. Kids walk around the parking lot collecting candy. My 2 grandsons 4 and 6 go around to their neighbors with a parent. Not the same as when my kids went out in the 80s 90s ran around the neighborhood and when they got home they dumped all the candy on the floor, took inventory and started trading getting rid of want they didn't want
Speak for yourself. I was a kid in the 1960's, and I wasn't allowed to go anywhere without my mother accompanying me until I was eleven.

older kids age 16-19 go to strange dress up partys some still watch scarey each other for fun by watching scaring movies on DVD
aludts age 20-30 have kids under 10 go trick or treating with little ones before 7pm
im not sure what persons age 50--80 will do? i think they but stay home play grand kids give out candy making there own fun
about 2 years ago i saw kids age 11-14 drees down as ghost/witches/monters alians come by trick or treating

As a kid living in the country I really wish someone had trunk or treating at the church or school when I was a kid! My mom would drive us for miles to my grandparents and a few other relatives houses that were within a half hour drive of our house. If we had walked around the “neighborhood” it would’ve taken us all night to stop at two houses that may not even have candy!!
In the 60's we went out with out parents also like most kids did back then. After 9 pm we would go home and watch scary movies and even before we went out. It was a fun time but lucky for me, I live in the same house I lived in as a kid, but now a renter here. I plan to walk around the and re-live some memories for old time sake. . 👻👻
Late 50's early 60's mom would order pizza and us 3 kids would be out the door. Our biggest concern on Halloween was a rainy or snowy night. Come home, empty our pillow case and out the door again. It hurts that children today cannot enjoy trick or treat the way we could.
I was born in 1956. These days will never return. My mother always made holidays so special. We had 7 girls in our family so there wasn't money for store bought items. We always made our own costumes. Mostly out the of the Old clothes that were ready to be sent to the Goodwill. It taught us how to be creative. Mom always fed us a hot meal before we left for trick or treating. When we got back we would have hot chocolate as it was always cold outside. Then we would sit on the living room floor and dump out our candy bags. Such treasure! The candy back then was not like the candy today. I call it fun candy.
To this day I love Halloween. Thanks Mom!
I was born in 1989 so trick or treating and Halloween was very much "PC" by then. I cannot begin to imagine what it must be like to grow up with 6 siblings around the holidays.
I was born in 1957,and I would go Trick or Treating in the 1960's. It was much safer and easier back then. But,you still had to be careful and have your candy checked out to make sure that the candy was safe. Now,a days Halloween can be very dangerous. You never know what will happen next.
Crime-Drugs and Perverts have destroyed the good old days.

Actually, it has _never_ been a thing for people to poison candy given to strangers' kids, nor put razor blades in fruit. It was the result of one or two people who killed their OWN children this way, then made it look as if strangers had randomly attacked unknown kids. All these years, many treats have been denied kids and parents have wasted hours and hours checking for punctures in candy wrappers or going to the local ER to have the food x-rayed.
Thank you for this look back at a fun time. When the world let kids be kids 😊
I was born in 1963 and remember wearing those plastic costumes with the masks. I still remember the smell of them. Halloween was and still is my favorite holiday.

In our neighbirhood in the late 70s there was a neighbor who would keep a fire going in the backyard . Trick or treaters and their parents were invited to sit by the fire and have apple cider and spiced wafers. I was disappointed the first year that there was no fire.

I grew up in the 80’s and it was the best time! I loved picking out my Halloween costume the one in the box with the plastic cover. I remember the elastic band on the mask would snap within the first 5 mins of wearing it. My favorite Halloween Costume I wore was my Strawberry Shortcake. 💕

In the early 90s Halloween decorations changed, for example, suddenly there were "friendly" ghosts, witches, and Frankenstein's with *smiles.*

The kids of the 90s have no idea how memorable old days were.
I vividly remember the Halloween parties held at our local community center. They were tame (especially by modern standards) and so much fun. A section was set off for the Haunted Tour. You walked in blindfolded and led by an adult. Your hand was guided to a bowl you were told was filled with eyeballs, and then brains, and other creepy things. Once you came out at the other end you and your friends would swear that what you felt was real. Bobbing for apples was also on the agenda, and the guys would strategize about exactly how they were going to seize an apple. The most popular method was to use your teeth to carefully 'tweeze' out the apple by its stem. My personal method was to choose an apple, and then press it to the bottom of the tub where it could not move and then bite it hard. I loved the homemade costumes my mom came up with, and loved watching her get excited about the adult block party that was going to be held after the kids went home. Halloween was never better than in those halcyon days of youth.

Wonderful memories!! At the end of the night, we would all sit down on our living room floor and empty out our pillowcase filled with candy into giant piles. We must have had hundreds of pieces. Then we'd divide them up by category and trade. So thankful for my childhood!! ❤️
In 1957, my school had a Halloween party for my class. One of the games involved blowing a ping pong ball across the width of a table, trying to get it past the kids on the other side. I woke up the next day with a raging case of that Asian flu that was going around at the time. I can't help but wonder how many kids I gave it to by blowing that ping pong ball around.

I loved Halloween, and really looked forward to “It’s the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown!” I remember being Batman, a Star Wars Stormtrooper, and Darth Vader over the years. The 70s/80s were still a special time to grow up in, especially in a small southern town.

Just recently I found out there was never an incident with a razor blade and an apple. It was indeed an urban legend while we thought it happened all the time it never even happened once! I was so fortunate to be a trick-or-treater in the 60s! Maybe even 71 or 72. Your videos bring back so many memories that we tend to forget in this decadent age. Thank you please keep posting them!
Those were the day's, kids today don't have a clue they take everything for granted.. nothing is appreciated.
70's trick or treater, I always came home with soooooo much candy, loved being creative with my own costumes every year. No plastic pumpkins with handles, we used old pillowcases 😊😊😊, and my parents ALWAYS checked our candy before we could eat any of it. Usually an older sibling passed out candy at home and my bit older sister and I went walking our entire street and next one over, safety in numbers. It's not anywhere as fun nowadays 😥😥😥😔😔😔
Yes we used pillow cases as well for our candy. And those plastic costumes were brutal, I couldn't breathe in the face mask and my Dad would cut holes in the nose areas.🎃
My first memories are of the 60’s. Buying pumpkins & having them stolen from our front porch! I remember my brother in a store bought witch costume. 70’s were the classic years. We would venture out & return to unload our treats only to head back out in the evening. 🎃👻🍁
they used to kick in pumpkins around our neighborhood , we would put ours on our kitchen table in the house, haha, one neighbor would put a anvil in his , I would hate the person who kicked his pumpkin, LOL !

My dad setup a speaker system along our backyard trees and played the album “The Chilling Thrilling Sounds of the Haunted House” by Disney. Scared the **bleep** out of us. Those were fun times!!!🎃👻

I remember most of the things in this video. However, the 1950's to 1960's were my favorite years for Halloween. The years when it was safe for the kids to be out without parents!

@@samanthab1923 my favorite is a 4’ cardboard jointed skeleton that my neighbor’s had hanging in their front living room window. It was probably from the 60s, but I remember it in the 70s, and how it would spook me at night because their house was directly in front of ours. It was until the early 90s that I was able to find one. Now I have collected 6 of them over the years. One in a bag never opened. I only display 1 every year and the rest I carefully store. I have so many great pieces and duplicates of cardboard pieces. I also collect the blowmolds and I have a few of the popcorn items. Most of my decorations I don’t actually display.

Born in '68, I was a seventies Halloween child, but enjoyed it as a teen in the eighties. People still celebrate today, but with all the dangers, and craziness out there, it's just not the same. I really miss seeing kids in costumes everywhere. My dream... If I had the money, I don't sadly, I would love to rent a big, clean warehouse every year and put on a safe, Halloween party for the local kids ages 5 to 15, to attend. I would allow anyone, including store owners to set up treat tables for kids to trick or treat, games, a movie room where the classic horror films, Frankenstein, Wolfman, The Mummy, etc. would play constantly, and of course, and small haunted house. Clean fun music for those who want to dance or just mingle, and a costume contest. There would be trusted adult volunteers watching over, making sure everything was safe and clean for the smaller boys and ghouls, and yes, they would be dressed up too. Right now that is just a dream I have. Someday I would love to make that annual party a reality. At least a small group of locals could enjoy Halloween they way we did in the 70s and 80s.

Our local Police Department decorates their large warehouse as a haunted house and local businesses donate TONS AND TONS of candy. All the employees dress up and hand out candy and local businesses do trunk or treat in the parking lot, costume contest, dance contest. You get a ticket for one free hotdog and bottled water. They fundraise for this event for a year. It's HUGE!! Very safe.

I trick or treated in the 60’s. We wore our regular clothes with a mask over our face. The mask had just a thin piece of elastic to hold it on. My grandkids have such awesome costumes! I did dress up at my workplace in the 90’s as Big Bird. We had neighbors with young kids. I went to their houses. It was so much fun to see their faces.
Now you just wear a Covid mask.
Even costumes of politicians like Nixon, Clinton, etc.
Tipping over outdoor toilets.

In the 60s my mom was a teacher. She would make a 100 of the best large popcorn balls that was soft & chewy, not hard as a rock. They became so well known that kids would line up down the street to get one. Can't do that anymore.
In my little town, some of us still make/bake homemade treats. We wrap them in plastic wrap or zip lock bags & include an address label as to who made it. We've done this for many years.... No issues.

In the late 60s me and my brother went to a little old lady's house on the edge of the neighborhood.
We surprised her because she didn't realize it was Halloween and didn't have any candy. After looking through her kitchen for a treat she gave each of us a sweet potato and told us to get mom to cook them for us.

My first school costume was a Casper the Ghost one because at the time he was my favorite cartoon! This was 1969 kindergarten and I'm not sure of the manufacturer but it likely came from Woolworths or Gemco! My dad always accompanied my brother and I trick or treating!

I had a Casper the ghost too. That was around 1963 or 64 but my fist one was an astronaut. I believe those were made by a company called Collegeville...
@@rickymcginnis7300 yep we had a casper and an astronaut, a princess, flipper. I loved the Casper cartoon and I also LOVED Wendy. I used to pretend I was Wendy and wave around a "magic wand".
I just watched the Casper movie last night and was thinking about the cartoon and I think comic books too. The first costume I remember was around 69-70. I took dance lessons and was Red Riding Hood for my recital, so I had to wear that for Halloween. It was better than the plastic masks that would come the next couple of years, though.
I trick or treated in the late 60s and early 70s. I always dressed up as some form of pirate. Gummy red nickels, popcorn balls, and sen sen - yes, sen sen - were my favorite treats.

My ealiest memory was when I was 5 years old as I was....... "Popeye the Sailor Man" for Halloween.
Halloween was the best back them. My friends and i started planning in Sept. of what we were going to do. When my best friend Marcy's grandma Opal made sugar cookies with orange icing we knew the time was near! YIPPEE!

I'm 61 now and boy, do I have memories. Like being terrified of the mask I picked out myself, the bigger kids chasing us younger kids saying they wanted our candy, the house nobody would go to because we were convinced it was haunted, etc. Years later taking my own kids trick or treating. What fun.
The fifties were my time for Halloween 🎃 the innocent years. The only costume I really remember is the time I went as the popular “tramp”. My grandmother was in charge of my costume and I didn’t check it out till it was time to go. To my dismay, she had sewn it perfectly because she was a seamstress and just couldn’t do anything else! I had the most perfect patches-all tucked in around the edges and carefully sewn!
Then my mother refused to let me have the burnt cork darken my face! And I couldn’t wear an old jacket because I didn’t have one! The thing I remember most is that every house we went to, people said I was the neatest tramp they’d ever seen!
In the 80's my friends dressed like Tramps...dressed like Madonna! 🤣

@@micwilliams7743 Barnabas Collins is my all time favorite Vampire, my late Wife and I had the coffin shaped box set, and we would count how many times the microphone would pop into view or a crew member would walk by a window, they have the show here in Minnesota on broadcast TV channel "Decades" at 4 to 5 am
I have the DVD and was lucky enough to find the book at a thrift store. I also have Charlie Brown Christmas on DVD and have the book my dad gave me when I was 9 years old and it still has my name and age I printed on it inside the cover.

I absolutely love Halloween! Halloween has always been my favorite Holiday because there are no limits to your IMAGINATION or your CREATIVITY! I remember how each year, our School had a HALLOWEEN PARADE on the School Grounds, then there was a HALLOWEEN PARTY held in each classroom during the last two hours of class on Halloween! Then later in the evening, at the neighborhood park, just before we would start our TRICK 'r TREATING, we would go to the park to watch as they lit the ANNUAL HALLOWEEN BON FIRE! The people who organized the BON FIRE encouraged kids to make their own Costumes! My Siblings and I had no choice, because we were too poor to buy Costumes! The Organizers would then hold a COSTUME CONTEST at the park for the kids in different age groups! They had 1yr - 4yr, then 5yr - 8yr, then 9yr - 12yr, then 13yr - 16yr old. The Prize was $10.00 dollars. I remember my brother entering the Contest in 1961, and he created his own Costume and Make-Up. He was 12 years old at the time. He took different color candles, then he melted each candle, and let the wax drip onto his face! The hot wax did burn him slightly, but he thought that it was worth it! He called himself the "INCREDIBLE MELTING MAN" Everybody loved his COSTUME and CREATIVITY! He WON the Contest in his age group! After the Contest was over, we then started our TRICK 'r TREATING about 6:30 PM, but in those days, people were willing to answer their door all the way up until Midnight, and every house gave out something! It was rare that we came across a house where no one was home! Our Pillow Cases would be full by the time we decided to finally go home! In those days, kids could stay out at night for hours without having to worry about coming across some Weirdo, or Psycho, so we felt safe on Halloween Night, even without Adult Supervision! You brought back so many happy memories! I wish it were still like that on Halloween for today's kids! It is sad that a night like Halloween, (that is such a part of childhood), has become so dangerous!
Hearing ben Cooper costumes brought me back to 1974 and so on
I remember Halloween as a child fondly. I was in the era where you had to be careful because people were putting razor blades into the candy and fruits. I remember the local hospital would send the candy through the x-ray machine for free to make sure it was safe. Last time I went trick or treating I was like 17-18 years old and I went as Freddy Kruger. Too funny.
The media is saying that razor blades in apples was a myth, that there is no record of anyone biting into a tampered apple like that.

I was born in 1958, so I went trick or treating in the 60’s. My sister always took me, we headed out when it was dark. It was spooky because we didn’t really go out at night, and you wondered if the ghosts, witches, and ghouls were gonna get you! The smell of burning pumpkins is one of my favorite aromas. I remember being very young and the neighbor lady came to show my mom her costume. She was dressed as the devil in a close fitted red leotard outfit, a mask, and horns on her head. She scared the hell out of me! 😂 Halloween is my favorite holiday!!!
I still remember very first Halloween costume. I was 4 or 5 and the costume was the Shari Lewis character, Lamb Chop. I don't think anyone in my family knew Lamb Chop was a female character. I can't really remember any of the other costumes I wore through the years. One thing I do remember, that was fairly popular back then. I was a Cub Scout, and we went Trick or Treating for UNICEF. On Halloween, in the late afternoon, all the kids would get together, and we were give a small cardboard box with a slit on the top. We would go from house to house and collect loose change for UNICEF. After we finished, we waited for the sun to go down and started the real Trick of Treating.
Trading candy was like money to us and the best candy was always horded .

Yeah I remember getting it home and sorting through it separating it by good stuff to eh stuff. Going out as much as possible and repeating the process. Anybody ever go to the same house when you knew they were giving out the good stuff 😂

Halloween was almost as magical as Christmas for me as I grew up in a small town in Ohio during the 1960's ! No one worried about checking their candy and the worst thing would be getting a stale popcorn ball left over from the previous Christmas ! I remember going as an astronaut , Casper the ghost and a devil . One year I made my own costume . It was a hillbilly,complete with hat,beard,clodhoppers,bib overalls and a corncob pipe ! There was always a big parade the weekend before and houses were decorated but not like they do nowadays with big lawn ornaments and electric lights ?
I learned early on to eat or hide the best pieces of candy. If Mom found them, they were gone and all I had left was the cheap stuff with no chocolate.

I feel beyond blessed to have been born in 1963. Literally, the two best decades to have been a kid! I miss those days.
Ah those sweet memories of Halloween in the 70's. I had an older cousin who was a member of a lodge, don't remember which, but every year they would put on a haunted house or terror trail to raise money for charity. One evening he and his brother-in-law dropped by the house in full deranged murderer costumes and knocked on the front door. Not knowing what was writing on the other side I ran to answer the door knocking. Upon opening the door and seeing two blood thirsty psychopaths I screamed and ran back through the house, of course leaving the door wide open so the maniacs could enter and dispatch the family at their leisure. Ah good times.

I had forgotten all about the red wax lips and orange harmonicas in the early 60s! The neighborhood candy store would get them in Oct. Also, Unicef was a big deal back then. Good times back then.
I had also forgotten about the wax stuff……but I could picture them as soon as he said it. Those were fun times!
I ate a few wax candies, pretty good.
Oh, I remember going trick or treating as a child in the 60s-early 70s. Groveport OH back then was a small village of around 1k residents, surrounded by farms. On Hallowe'en in the late 60s our elementary school would have us dress up and walk a bit down Main St. for a parade. Then we go home and get ready for trick or treat, dressing up in either a Ben Cooper or Collegeville costume that smelled chemically and a mask that would get wet with your breath in the cool of the evening....and don't stick your tongue in the slit of the mask...good way to cut yourself. We'd walk together with our siblings and eventually separate to go our own way.
After hitting the houses and getting quite the haul with candy bars, assorted candy (like Smarties, Necco wafers, Mary Janes, Chico Sticks, pixie sticks, etc), popcorn balls, homemade caramel apples and stuff, we headed for the stores. The store managers would give you candy as well, and the Dairy Creme (later Dairy Queen) would give you a small ice cream cone. When a bakery opened in the 70s, they gave you a handmade donut.
The last stop was near our house, which was the firehouse. The firemen had a couple of long tables sitting in front, and they made you a hotdog and a cup of Pepsi. A warm hotdog was the perfect way to cap off a successful night of trick or treating. Then we went home and looked through our haul while watching A Charlie Brown Hallowe'en. I tell you; it didn't get better than that!
I always loved the school classroom Halloween party's were parent brought in candy and treats. Of course the walk around the school ground was fun too.
Around 1961 we were allowed to wear our costume to school. I had thr Zorro outfit made out of that cheap, flammable synthetic and plastic mask. On the way back home I really had to use the restroom but when I got home the very thin satin tie in the back was so tight it was impossible to get it loose. Of course no one was home at the time and you can only imagine what happened. I do remember crying!

I remember the mask and plastic smock. I was a pound puppy lol. And yes they had that very distinctive smell.
My mom was born in 1950 and continued the tradition of Halloween parties; they were always super fun, and she made my costumes until I was about 9. My favorite she made me was a costume from when I was 2.5/3. It was a bear costume and I loved it so much I wore it all year ❤️. The only thing I didn't like was that the lining of the faux fur was suppppeeeerrr itchy.

Ah the memories! I also recall having to get back in time from trick or treating in order to watch Its The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown on television, since we didn't have VCRs back then.
We'd be out til 11 pm! Kids can't even go alone anymore...too many weirdos out there. What a shame.
Happy Halloween!!!! I grew up in the 60's and 70's. Parties were still popular, Halloween parades were big. I lived in the midwest and Homecoming was usually tied to Halloween as they were a week apart. So big bonfires and team spirit, cheerleading and football games as well as dances were important parts of the season. I remember being a teen and having to escort and babysit my much younger siblings and their friends on Halloween night, so parents could go to adult parties! It was a great time to be growing up! I was a Mom by the mid eighties and yeah, we took even our youngest out and checked candy. You could even take it to the hospital to have it xrayed, lol! Iblived in the small town I grew up in so no worries!!! My youngest turned 18 this year and still enjoys dressing up, handing out candy, watching scary movies, eating popcorn and decorating the yard!

So many memories. Halloween was the best time of the year, except maybe Christmas. What I remember most are my costumes. I was Batman, Spiderman, the Lone Ranger, Luke Skywalker, the Six Million Dollar Man, Doctor Who, the Grim Reaper, complete with a real six foot scythe that would probably get me arrested today, and Superman. I'd start trick or treating the minute I got home from school, and wouldn't come in until long after dark. Those were good times. I wouldn't trade my childhood for anything.
While we were growing up during the late 50's-60's there was always the people that left a bowl of candy on their porch.
Trusting kids to the 'Honor System'. Well of course some one would just dump the bowl into their bag right away.
If I remember correctly those early plastic costumes were a very big fire hazard. After a few accidents, they began advertising them as "fire-retardant". Also, the big homemade costume in my day was the ghost with a sheet thrown over your head with holes cut into it for eyes. It was easy and fast. Only problem, it was tough on Mom's sheet supply.
Which reminds me they neglected to mention the popularity of firecrackers....the reason flammability became a problem!!
'50s kid. One thing I see missing here is the after-school Halloween Carnival that started at dusk and went til about 9 PM. Game booths with prizes, bake & toy sales, usually a haunted house, and most of your friends cycling through at one time or another, all kept safe by your teachers who you got to see in silly costumes once each year. So, I have to ask, was that a regional or local thing, and most of the country won't know what I'm talking about? Really fun post, in any case!
Our Halloween carnival was on the Saturday beforehand. Different classrooms had different types of games there was a haunted house that was made from large boxes you had to crawl though, a hay ride, a cake walk where the moms would bring a homemade cake and
Put them all out on a table. If you won You got to go over and pick any cake you wanted and bring it home. One year I won 3 cakes!!
@@Dh-rp7gg, sounds like a great time! Maybe ours was on Saturday, or perhaps Friday night. There's been a lot of water under the fantail since then! I just remember all the kids being in costume, and I don't remember getting into costume twice each year. Whatever night it was, they created some of my best childhood memories!

@@Blakeneyd, they really should. Kids got to have fun and be safe too. It must have stopped when somebody sued a school district because their kid didn't win a prize or some such thing. Teachers' unions? Liability insurance for schools? I'm sure it wasn't because kids stopped wanting to have fun!
My early childhood was the 70's and a little bit into the 80's, and I had quite a few fond Halloween memories, many of which were mentioned in this video. The pre-packaged vinyl costumes with the plastic masks were a staple. For decorations, those plastic orange pumpkins and cardboard cut-outs of skeletons, witches, cats, and pumpkins were everywhere around the house. Mom would take me and my sisters around the neighborhood, and we'd load up on all sorts of delicious sweet treats. Reese's peanut butter cups, Dum Dums lollipops, Twizzlers strawberry licorice, Tootsie rolls and pops, and Snickers bars were among my favorites. Another slew of reasons I sure do miss that time of my life!
My Halloween neighborhood outings were in the late 1940's, early 1950's. Lots of apartment buildings where I lived so we were able to knock on a lot of doors in a short period of time. I kind of remember some folks used to fashion Halloween-themed orange napkins into little candy bags filled with smaller candy items. One year we had a bonanza when a new neighbor who came from Europe, not familiar with the holiday, had purchased the large pillowcase size Halloween bags (the type the kids carried), filled them with candy and was handing those out. When she handed one to me I tried to explain to her that it was way too much candy but she didn't speak English. After a minute or two of trying to give her the bag back, I finally took it so that she wouldn't be insulted.
I was born in 1957 and Halloween has always been my favorite, in the 1960's costumes were also made of rayon and decorated with glitter or the characters were printed on, also included masks, and accessories, really a fun time 🎃🍬🍫🧡🧡
Halloween was such a big event in 1966 in Knoxville Tennessee on Bridgewater Road, that dozens of neighborhood kids dressed up in store bought costumes and their parents paraded along in the street! I have Kodachrome 25 8mm movie film of the event that took place in the afternoon. Those were fun times for me as a kiddo.

I was born in the summer of 1967, and grew up in the Bronx, N.Y. It wasn't the safest place at night. Luckily, my family and I lived in an apartment building. There was another apartment building next to ours. My mother would get one of the older kids to take me trick or treating, in our building and the one next door. It was enough to fill my bag. Loved this video, thanks for the memories!
I was a kid in the 50s and we always trick or treated. The domino mask wasn’t plastic and I would ask my mom in early June what I could be for Halloween!

Your video presentations create such wonderful memories in my older years. Even I was in my 20s in the 1970s, that decade was the most memorable for me and my friends. Now in my 60s I can relive those great times.

Before the candy companies started sell mini candy all the take was full size, sometimes even gigantic versions of favorites. It wasn't difficult to fill a pillowcase a couple times in a few hours. At today's prices, that haul would be worth hundreds. Great times. Great vid.
I found a picture of a tin Halloween sparkler last night. It was a tin wheel that spun around when you squeezed a trigger. As it spun you could see the sparks behind two windows of transparent red and blue plastic. Mine was red white and blue with pictures of black cats. There were also pumpkins and witch face ones that I found pictures of. Anyone else have one of these in the 60s?
I had the sparklers with red and blue plastic slots with the black cats on it late 60s early 70s , after that they disappeared off the market, lol there were roll candies called smarties always mixed with rolls of fizzers , they look the same on the outside but fizzers were better tasting than smarties and fizzy, they took the fizzers off the market of course in the 80s , maybe because you could drop them in Pepsi or Coke and get a foaming mess , fun joke to pull on people , smarties are still around all alone LOL !
@@paulsolfelt8452 Never heard of fizzers. Sounds like i'd like those. My favorite candy in recent years was Chewy Spree. Can't find those anymore. Not in stores anyway. I did get some on eBay. I see they still sell Zotz. Those were a good fizzy candy.
Yes we used to get zotz all the time but I had some a couple years ago so I know that there still around!

I was born in 64 so my memories of Halloween are from the late 60s to mid-70s. My mother was a nurse and she had an old nurse's cape hanging in her closet that to me was always a vampire's cape. When Halloween came around and I was finally tall enough to wear it properly I put it on, my older sister made up my face, and I walked out the door feeling like the coolest vampire that ever walked the dark streets of Gloucester, Massachusetts. (Plus as an added bonus it was a really heavy wool cape that kept my dumb butt warm on those cold nights)...
Born in 1954 so I grew up during the days of Halloween parties with everyone trying to outdo each other on the best party. Homemade costumes, parades in town with best costume contests. Lots of homemade cookies, candy & popcorn balls - Yum!
Today's kids will never know how fun Halloween used to be. It makes me sad they'll never get to experience what we did. 🎃 I loved having our school Halloween parade. Such great memories 🎃

It was 1984. It was my first Halloween. I was 3. I was a ghost, but had to wear my coat under my costume to go out with my big sis and mom trick-or-treating. My costume changed from ghost to marshmallow.
The only thing that got scary trick-or-treating was after we heard that someone was putting razor blades in apples. We never ate another piece of Halloween fruit after that, but that was fine with us!!
And how dumb, that you wouldn't be able to tell if a razor was in an apple..oh the fear mongering.

It's so fun to watch these videos you put out! They really were magical times back then. I was born in 62. So I remember those fun Pladtic masks! You couldn't really breath well! Lol! I loved Halloween the fun light not so scary times they were magical! It is so amazing that my first son, Jack named after my Dad was born on Halloween 1990. Some friends would call him jack-o-lantern! So it is so fun celebrating his birthday! I still sneak in some kind of Halloween theme. He likes it! He is almost 32. His younger brother loves it too! And of course I do!

Back when I was an 8 year old in 1963, there were no chaperones, play dates or kids' Halloween parties. But my sisters, brothers and I sure had fun! Costumes? Always what we put together ourselves. My mom, my older sister and I were good at sewing and making costumes. We came by home by 9 pm, our pillowcases loaded with "loot". I agree - times were less scary back then, our parents knew we would be safe, and our neighbors also looked out for us. I liked those hinged paper scarecrows and witches hanging on just about every front door. Woolworth's or Newberry's in the middle of town sold all the Halloween decorations we'd need. BTW - Does anyone remember those licorice and orange pea-sized balls in square cellophane packets? I haven't seen them since the mid 1960s.
