as an artist, and as an artist that often draws superheros, i can tell you that drawing tights is NOT easier than loose fitting clothes. especially since with clothes, you just draw wrinkles. whereas tights, not only do you (sometimes) have to draw wrinkles, but also the musculature of the hero, and you also have to get the anatomy to at least LOOK correct. some artists are very stylized, i prefer realism, so while this may be different for other artists, ive never met another artist that thought drawing tights was easier than loose fitting clothes.

It really depends on the character, their personality, skill set, and powers. For characters who do a lot of acrobatics (spider-man, nightwing, and daredevil) it makes sense to go capeless as it would get in the way and restrict them. For characters who are known to have a strong regal stature (superman, batman, and thor) the cape gives them a strong upper class look.
Characters known for their Physical prowess (spiderman, superman, captain america, and flash) it makes sense to wear tights that don't restrict movement and show off their muscles. Characters who are known for other abilities like tech and magic (iron man, dr. strange, or rorschach) it makes no sense to wear tight clothing.

Some genuine objectiveness on the art stuff:
Bodysuits: If you're drawing humans to a professional standard, you always draw them buck-naked and _then_ clothe them. Not detailed buck-naked, mind, and we all know not every comic artist is a spectacular anatomist coughLiefeldcough - but naked all the same. The body is the primary action, and the hair and garments are secondary reaction - they specifically follow through on the movement of the first. One common method of simplifying designs in a cartoon is making clothing that either is indistinguishable from the base model in construction or just doesn't move (see Simpsons - 3D construction, but the clothing is cylinders at the loosest), and in the more realistic art style employed for superhero comics both of these would be jarring if they weren't explained away as being spandex, which has similar properties in real-life.
Eyes: Distance means smaller scaling on a physical medium, which means that a detail misplaced by a tiny amount on the page can be greatly offset on the character model itself. This is why anime often becomes the most off-model in wide shots, and why the Steven Universe staff designed much more simplified character models for this purpose. Pupils are one of the easiest things to screw up since if you don't perfectly align them it makes the character appear to have strabismus or lazy eye, and this is genuinely harder the smaller the detail gets.

Drag is always there. The drag of the cape decreases the amount of energy the flying superhero needs to expend in order to slow down as well as decreasing the distance required for the slow down. Now at the power levels we're discussing, it's probably still negligible, but they're comics. In the end, best not to think about it too hard (as my brother put it to get out of the conversation).

I think The Question has one of the best designs in all of comic books. Whether The Question is female or male, The Question has loose fitting clothes, no trunks, his trench coat acts as his cape, and his blank face goes that one step further with regard to the white eyes. He or She is really a brilliant example of a normal person waking amongst the giants.

I dunno, I do really like Rorschach and his steez, but at the same time, his design is a bit busy. I like The Question's character a tiny bit better and he's the perfect balance of iconic simplicity. They both seek truth, but I feel The Question is a better symbol of the people, his blank visage holding the infinite masses who desire justice and truth in a world that has wronged them.

    • @conradkorbol

+TheRealVastile well Rorsach is almost a parody of The Question. His design is almost the same but if we are flaking about iconic Rosach's mask is one of the most iconic images in comic book history. Gotta say, those trenchcoats do a fantastic job at projecting the air of mystery without the imposing raw power that capes project. Maybe I watch too many detective films or something, but it seems like a trenchcoat makes a hero seem automatically 20% cooler.

Incorrect. Daredevil was created by Jack Binder and first appeared in Silver Streak Nº6 in September of 1940 and it was revamped by Editor Jack Cole. By July 1941 Lev Gleason publications launched Daredevil's main series with art by Jack Biro which would last for little over 15 years until September 1956.
In the early days of Marvel Comics which as you might presume was a time where Marvel was creating characters at an insane pace to bring as much of a broader audience as possible. At one point Stan Lee had a bet with one of his colleagues about making a superhero that was physically impaired in some way.
They rambled on for a little while and Stan said the most detrimental disadvantage he could come up with was sight, to which his friend replied it would never sell. Stan immediately remembered Daredevil, a superhero he remembered fondly and enjoyed reading.
So he called Biro whom was a close friend of Stan and asked him for permission to use the character's name to which Biro happily agreed. However it was basically a new superhero since the original Daredevil, Bart Hill fought with a Boomerang instead of a Baton and was a mute instead of a blind man.

+NerdSync The Capes could help with flight patterns depending on how its used. An example of this would be if Supergirl gripped the cape while adjusting her flight pattern left or right slightly. This would have the cape act as sort of a parachute catching wind and pulling her body in that direction (allowing her to maintain near maximum speed while making a sharper turn without much effort).
Additional explanation: With parachutes this technique is known as "slipping". It is usually used to slow a jumper by pulling one side of the chute in the direction they are currently going or against the strongest winds. This slows the jumper enough to create softer landing.

Weighing in on costumes way late but something I've been thinking about over the past few years and watching the dimming slash "more realistic" of costumes in movies and TV, is the "purposes" of costumes. So here are some of my reasons for costume elements.1. Capes like Batman's useful for hiding your shape [camouflage] and making it harder for folks to shoot you when you aren't bullet-proof. And you can use it to whip at foes' eyes, distracting and potentially blinding them for a bit. It's also why a number of early costumed crimefighters used colored smoke when fighting crooks.2. Other colorful capes like Captain Marvel and Superman is designed to attract the eye. This also helps to draw the criminals' eyes away from potential hostages when fights break out. Snappy patter like Ted Cord's Blue Beetle and Spiderman also help in keeping the criminals' eyes on them and not the regular folks around them.3. Cowls: part of the reason for cowls like Batman, Hawkman and Daredevil [besides looking cool] is it helps break up the human head outline, thereby another form of camouflage. Very good for fighting in dim areas like Bats and DD usually do.4. Dark costumes to help blend into the dim and dark areas for sneaking around if your preferred area of crime fighting is night time.5. Colorful costumes to help attract all eyes to you if your preferred fighting time is in bright light or daytime.6. Identification. Everyone knows what a policeman or a fireman looks like due to the uniforms that they wear. A colorful costume basically says "HEY! I'm a person who can help you out when you are in need." Which is one of the reasons I do not like the dimming of costumes nowadays, it is a dimming of the hero as someone you can spot to help you out of a jam.Netflix's Defenders really brought this home to me. Only Daredevil had a costume. Luke Cage isn't any more distinguishable than any other bald black guy wearing a hoodie around Harlem. Great if he is going incognito, not so great if he is trying to let the folks around him know that he is there to help if they need him and to warn crooks from trying to break the law [like why most cops wear police uniforms, because that is the message they are trying to send].So to me, the dimming or realistic costume is saying that we can no longer look to these people for help or to even trust them. One of the reasons I like Superman's trunks, they help break up the blue of his outfit and make him more distinguishable from others. Right now, Superman looks like Cyclops to me, if Cyclops added a red cape and changed his X with an S.

I was speaking from a general standpoint it seems that a lot of people do. I do as well, I love non realistic fantasy too! I was just speaking more from a standpoint of general audiences from what I have seen. I guess because we have seen recent pieces of media question and point less realistic aspects and traits in superhero stories and even in sci fi. And I know that this approach is for everyone or that it should be. It isn't, and it shouldn't....but that's just the current state of the medium, and that's fine. Plus we still have less realistic pieces of fantasy being made. That won't go away, nor will realistic fantasy. They ebb and flow. Realism may be popular today, more fantastic unrealistic could be bigger tomorrow. It really doesn't matter, Just enjoy what you enjoy and let others enjoy what they enjoy.

Okay, I do a bit of drawing as an Industrial Designer and have drawn lots of people my entire life, being a comic book fan and what not. I'm not a great artist by any stretch, but I can tell you this, based on the way comic characters are drawn, tights, trunks and white eyes are easier to draw. Based on the process most artists follow. You start with a stick figure like skeleton, you mark out the size of the joints with circles at the elbows, shoulders, hips and knees, and circles for the hands. Then you draw a sort of tube figure by drawing lines between the outside points of the circles. Which sort of give you outline of the character's body. This may even include the lines around the hip area that sort of corresponds to the bottom of the trunks. If you have a character in loose fitting clothes, you then sort of draw the clothes around these very basic lines. Then you erase them.
If the character is in tights, especially in the early days, you could kind of just directly use these outline lines without much modifications because the drawings were less detailed. This meant less erasing and redrawing of lines, instead you just filled in interior details and you could quickly churn out a bunch of panels. Having the trunks in place, also meant you didn't need to erase the lines separating the groin from the legs, which are reference lines you put on the tube figures, for your own benefit as a artist, but usually get rid of in the final drawing.
Then the white eyes also save you a fair amount of work, because when you draw the eyes in, you need to make sure they line up and are looking in the same direction, otherwise they'll look odd to people. It's a small detail, but one that people definitely easily pick up on. Doing it, even when you're practiced at it, could take a few tries requiring a fair amount of erasing, and when working on paper, that might end up ruining a drawing you've spent a long time on. With the advent of photoshop and illustrator this isn't as big a deal anymore, because the drawing can be created digitally and modified as many times as the artist would like.
However, tights, trunks and white eyes definitely would save artists time, especially in the early days of comics, as it would allow them to use lines from early stages of the drawing process in the final drawing without much modification. These days, as leg and arm muscles are precisely detailed when characters are in tights, this doesn't work so much, as those lines need to be redrawn whether a character is in clothing or tights.

I'm giving the color a pass because it has the same affect as white. The tights thing is a matter of whether wearing tights is an outdated concept because it references strong men from the 1930s which is something irrelevant for modern times. Having a sort of living goo on your body is outside the datedness of the tights so... does it count?

The Supergirl comment about Aerodynamics is non-sense IMO. She's already very agile and fast. In my own headcanon, the reason for capes (aside from a cultural aesthetic thing) is that the cape provides a greater surface area for her to absorb more Sunlight, because it's a Kryptonian material that lets her body absorb energy like her skin. Also that it can be used to shield people (it's been done a few times in the comics). Think of Superman out in space, absorbing Solar radiation with his cape floating around him, acting as a solar sail so he can recharge more quickly. The impracticalities of a cape are largely negated by Krytonian powers.

The best costume I always admired was Superman's costume at Action comics new 52. In this first issue, we see Superman in his early years, his costume shows a Superman shirt, jeans, boots (I believe its farm boots or maybe just ordinary tank boots), and red flowing cape. This costume really intrigues me of how it's playful looking and fun to see Superman with civilian clothing with a cape on. It has this old school pulp comic theme, I don't know, maybe its just me, also shows that make believe Superhero we all imagined as a child. It makes me think of my childhood years playing superhero in my living room. Even though Superman doesn't have those masks that covers his eyes with motionless white glares. Without the white eye domino mask makes Superman more friendlier and non-mysterious to the citizens of Metropolis. First Action comics New 52 Superman costume is still cool in my opinion, even with or without the white eyes domino mask.

The white eyes, are actually an objective thing we can argue in relation to drawing. It's exactly the opposite of what you said. It makes it way easier to have a readable face with simple white eyes in a small drawing than a close up. It's like a good logo design, the mask and face should be easily readable in very small situations, especially seeing that all comics were drawn with a pen in the beginning. It's not as easy to control the ink in detail, being closer to painting than modern ball pen.
Expression of the character is easier to read when you make the shape of the eyes really readable, creating also contrast between the main characters to follow on the page, and the rest.
Trying to draw inside the eye, would just lead to smudging and loss of focus.
Besides the artistic points, you create a clear distinction between the hero persona and his normal everyday life. It's like showing you he/she's in "prey" mode of you will, reminiscent of animals that hunt in the night lurking in the shadows, a clear concept of vigilance transmitted to the reader.

One thing about the white eyes, most artists who draw them also draw them with expression. When the character is angry or grinning the shape of the white eyes changes. Batman is the most obvious example of that. Check out a story where he is cross or threatening and the white eyes will be narrowed to slits to help covey the emotion. If they are just part of the mask they shouldn't be able to change.
I think this is why movies have chosen to use the eye makeup to get as close as possible to the comics effect so that the eyes' shape can change but you don't see the skin around them. (Although I always get a chuckle when a hero takes off his mask to reveal a clean face! LOL)
Alex Ross solution is pretty much the same as the movies. Firstly the cowl comes with frown lines built in and those lines are subtly altered depending on the situation. Although he shows normal eyes, there is no skin colour around them. You can't tell where the cowl and mask ends and the skin begins. It flows seamlessly right up to the eyes themselves. (Page 11 of Justice 2 for example)

The capes thing, I think it's like the argument for Superman's undies-on-the-outside, or Batman's chest emblem (the old one with the yellow oval); it's a 'flag' or symbol. It gains enemy attention. Pulls their focus from civilians.
Superman and Supergirl, for instance, are, in MMO terms, tanks. They want the enemy to focus on them while civilians get away. Batman's emblem was explained as, chest armor is the thickest, hardest piece of armor he can wear. The eye is naturally drawn to a bright yellow emblem on the chest, when the rest of his outfit is black/grey, drawing their attention, and as such, their attacks.
Capes could also just be a fashion thing; Thor's cape is a sign of his princely position in Asgard. Storm's funky 90's 'cape' was designed to catch the wind, which allowed her to fly. It gave her stability.
Magneto's cape, I presume would be due to his sense of superiority; generally considered to be a 'royal' piece of attire in elder times, which seems to go with the way he thinks. Some, like Vision, i have no clue. Scarlet Witch; well, women aren't drawn with the most practical of outfits, perhaps her cape, like Emma Frost, were designed to keep her warm on chilly days. :P

I think the trunks are not a bad choice from a design point, because it puts emphasis on the hips and guts that are basically showing the direction the character is going. It the center of gravity of the body and making it more visable may help with readability.
Lots of superheroes or anime characters from stories with action content have some kind colour contrast in the mid area of the body instead of just wearing a monocoloured 'onesie' either with belts or just colour accents or different coloured pants.
It's like giving a character contrast-coloured gloves when you want the reader to look at the character's hands even when the panel is pretty small.

Am a physics tutor, Capes *DO HELP* with flying in the same way a badminton shuttlecock works, as for cornering, it would directly affect the 'moment' of rotation (the change in momentum from linear to angular, see conservation of energy).
    Providing that:
    - the forward force is forwards of the torso (why heroes extend their hands up to go up and forward to go forwards.. also thrusting a second hand to go faster)
    - the drag force is now further to the rear, near the feet as the largest ruffles of the cape catch the air
This provides the hero an axis to pivot when flying.. the [exaggerated] difference of cape vs no cape, is akin to the batmobile trying to take a corner at speed like a regular car.. OR shooting out a grappling hook to grab something to go around the corner ..
EDIT, the cape would work ALSO as a spoiler ... on the caveat that the hero's chest, pelvis and thighs were smoother than the cape in flight... in other words, they're wearing tights, they don't have large breasts like power girl and the cape is flappy ...
    - the disturbed air above the hero would form vertices of turbulent air, the air below would not.. creating a pressure difference, rolling the body to either side, would move the pressure in a banking turn with the hero, allowing for use of the cape as a spoiler in flight. lower air pressure to the hero's back and higher air-pressure to his front... allowing difference to push the hero up in level flight like a regular wing.. or around a corner in a banking turn...
.. if the hero's physique or costume doesn't meet the criteria... there would be no spoiler effect.. only the 'shuttlecock' drag effect

Regarding the throw-away line from Supergirl, she wears a cape because it's what cousin Kal does. I've always figured he keeps it handy to wrap people in for their protection. (Classic image is of him pulling a kid out of a fire, swaddled in his cape.)

On Tights: Superheroes are drawn in tights for a myriad of reasons, actually. For one, it allows exposure of their contours to seem "more powerful and well-built" than ordinary people. Second, while drawing it allows the artist to depict the character in the most dynamic and action-oriented pose possible, and the forms can allow for the most expressive gestures that no-tights alternatives may not have.

Great work man. You really care about what we think about the content and actually made a video to discuss it. And you "apologised" for your mistakes . Thats just great transparency between you and your audience. I became a fan of your attitude. Keep this up. Be generous and understanding. Take responsibility. Great videos you make . Subscribing to you right now.

About the white eyes, we've seen in Deadpool that it doesn't limit the actor's performance... they made the mask very expressive, so he does act with his eye area too. In drawing, it doesn't matter because you can make it expressive too.

I think that's why they would always have Spider-Man's mask ripped up by the end of the older Spider-Man movies. It allowed the actor to emote more without being covered up by the mask since there was really no real world explanation to his eyes being able to move like the comics. What I like about the AI suit in Homecoming is that it gives the suit a logical reason for having the moving eyes.

As an artist myself, I can safely say that tights would be WAY easier and -perhaps more importantly for the artists- faster to draw than loose fitting clothes.
When you draw loose clothes you always have to start with the body underneath and add on to it, something you don't have to worry about with tights.
(Plus there's the whole not having to draw detailed feet or bulky shoes. Which is always a plus. xP)

A cape may give the hero a better form factor. Yes, there's more skin friction due to the increased area, but a better form factor would give the hero less overall drag, and it's the overall drag that's important. For instance, the hero with a cape more approximates an aircraft with a delta-wing, a configuration particularly suited for supersonic flight.
Having a good form factor is important for supersonic heroes because the less energy the heroes put into flight, the less damage their sonic booms do. (The energy of the sonic boom comes from the energy the hero uses to maintain speed - the less energy they spend doing that, the better.)

I feel like the only reason people would wear capes wouldn't be a science reason, it'd be a feedback reason.. like the human body isn't very good at being able to ascertain which direction it's going at higher speeds but it also probably would be really disorienting to be facing the wrong way.. with the cape, even if they get hit or they change direction suddenly they can always at least get instant feedback about their current directional momentum, which I imagine would be helpful for catching yourself midair in the precise way that all flying heroes do so effortlessly.. or at least that's how I've always viewed it, like you focus your mind on flying away from wherever the fabric is tugging in order to help practice and maintain your orientation

I think the white eyes, particularly throughout the Golden, Silver, and Bronze Ages, when the printing and paper were less refined, made a character's eyes easier to see, in wide shots. It gave their expressions a more open look, whereas a pupil, when the eye is surrounded by a dark mask, could blot out the whites of the eyes almost entirely in action panels. Even when the coloring WASN'T misaligned.
And the fx they're using now, for characters like Deadpool and MCU Spidey, have been able to negate the "expression-limiting" downside to white eyes on big screen heroes.

Minor nitpick from a different nerd-sphere: Spoilers on cars don't create downforce (or at least, not on purpose). Spoilers reduce turbulence in the air behind the car, which reduces drag. In most cars this is done by the trunk, taking the downward-moving air from the back window and directing it straight back - but if your car has a fastback or hatchback the spoiler is there to do that job.
By reducing drag, a spoiler can make a car go faster - but most spoilers on the cars you see driving around reduce drag in order to improve highway fuel economy.
To create downforce, you need a _wing_, which (a) sits higher to collect more air, (b) has an airfoil shape, and (c) has an angle of attack that generates downforce.
As for the physics, I wouldn't bother since Supergirl flies via unexplained not-magic-we-promise anyway.

I think the difference in between eyes being covered or not and how it affects the actor, is that it depends on how the character is going to be filmed/imaged. Mostly close in? Stunts? Simple physical presence on stage? Some actors are better at showing the full emotional range on their face alone. Some are better verbally.. and some are better physically. Hell, Darth Vader had an actor for EACH of those aspects! David Prowse (Basically height and stage presence), Bob Anderson (stunts), James Earl Jones (Voice).
That is part of the reason why Darth Vader is so iconic! 3 Masterful performers in their own rights, the best of each all to show one character that makes him far more memorable than most of the rest of the star wars universe, in total.

Fins on the back of the boots should solve the turning problem(if there is one). Capes would not only create drag but serve as a vacuum if the hero is going fast enough. The capes do create a sense of present whether it be glory (superman), fear (batman), symbolize royalty (thor), or have another function (enhancing powers, concealment etc.).

Supes' red trunks are camouflage for his junk. Red cape creates a large red field behind him, the blue suit areas are highlighted by their contrast, and even more highlighted is his chest with the huge symbol on it. But the red trunks blend right into the red of the cape creating near invisibility for his no-no zone. Basically, Supes doesn't care if you sniper him in the chest, arms or legs, even head but he is gonna try and make it difficult for you to shoot him in the balls. They may be invulnerable, but that'd still sting like a mofo!

The capes are used in the art to depict motion in a static image. With a character like Thor, he would just be a horizontal figure in the air while a character like Spidey doesn't need a cape because of the way his body contorts while swinging.

My thought on white eyes is it's like cartoon characters wearing white gloves. They're the best contrast against what is usually a dark form/costume.
.....and As for your (No tights, no trunks, white eyes, and a cape.......Well, You won't be familiar with this character yet because I haven't finished doing the comic, but I created a character who has ALL of this criteria down and you're gonna love him.
