    I found myself being more naturally talented at sculpting rather than drawing. I need to refine my skills a hell of a lot more though. I hope I can do it.
    And I wish everyone else who is sculpting to never give up and to keep going! ❤️☺️

    Last technique is how I ATTEMPT sculpting and I ALWAYS end up with a head twice the size I planned because I cover mistakes with more layers😂🤦🏻‍♀️ Also I can see why females and babies are the hardest to capture due to all the smooth plains! The most subtle mistakes make HUGE differences. I want to try the first technique! I gotta stop overthinking and capture the essence of a face BEFORE fiddling with the details. THANK YOU! Another useful video with easy to follow instructions. No fluff or bullshit.

      I totally know the feeling of the sculpt getting larger and larger. Just did that recently when making Frankensteins monster.
      A technique I saw to help overcome this. Is you can take measurements from a model or even a photo. You put nails at the largest parts. So you put a nose with a nail in the centre of it to be the furthest part out if measured correctly.
      OR I sculpt in the round but make sure I put the nose and eyes in early. As I know the head is generally 5 eyes wide that helps define the size of the head early. And with the nose I have to remember to make it a little larger than I would like to be the right scale

    Thanks Matt.You do great work!This is a great overview for sculpters like me.I've been on/off sculpting since the late 90's early 2000's garage kit days & mostly do 1/6th scale figures.I've sold quite a few,but want to be even better with small scale portraits.I just never found a comfortable method for being accurate with the face of the person,other than drawing proportions.I usually do a two paper front & side profile of the subject,then glue them together.Filling in as I go along.Sometimes I'm accurate,sometimes off. ~ This was short & simple,yet great & informative.I'd like to see you do one explaining scale more definitively.Another one of my hangups! :) Thanks again Matt.Good job!

    • @MattGrayart
      @MattGrayart  Před 3 lety

      That's a good method with the paper outline. Scale figures I applaud anyone who can do them, I don't necessarily work in a scale becusse if I do I find that I always add 10 percent to the figure and throw the scale out. Hence why I applaud someone who can work within scale limits, much more precise than I could be.
      I kind of throw the clay down to a size I think I can work and if it's a little bigger, then I just handle the size difference.
      Might have to ask you for pointers on scale models!

      Howdy. I normally use monster clay. Reusable and goes very firm when it cools. But my favorite clay is just cheap pottery clay. It's freely available, easy to use with no prep work, and you can easily fix mistakes. But it is messy so you might need a little space for it.
      There's other types of clay out there, like chavant which is oil based clay like monster clay. But if starting out I highly recommend getting pottery clay (water based clay)

    • @MattGrayart
      @MattGrayart  Před 2 lety

      This is a skull sculpture I made and cast in resin on a stick years ago. It was too serve as the base to work from.
      I originally made it so I could build up the muscles etc to build a face but found it was too fiddly to make sculptures that way and not a method I preferred.
      But since Halloween is on in some countries there might be some cheap plastic skills available to sculpt on

    My best friends baby recently passed away about 2wks ago a 5mons old. I wanna do a sculpture of her face & her baby. Maybe with her face looking up at her baby, in away that it looks like she’s holding her daughter above her and the end result a heart. Both faces in the heart. How’s the best way to achieve that look. Maybe 8/10 size. Also instead of having to use so much clay what can I use to help fill the inside part(?) our do it sorta like a wall sconce type idea??

    • @MattGrayart
      @MattGrayart  Před 2 lety

      I'm so sorry to hear that. I hope her and her family are okay.
      With the face of a child, they can be quite complex to sculpt , even though they look relatively simple to do.
      I would do the arms seperate then the baby's face seperate so you can work on them separately.
      If you use a oil based clay it would hold the details a lot more on such a small scale, which is easier than water based clay to use in that instance. From the back of the sculpture you can carve out the clay to make it hollow.
      Sincere condolences for your friend and you.

    • @MattGrayart
      @MattGrayart  Před 2 lety

      @@johnnyblaze373 hey there Johnny.
      I started sculpting not too long ago. Probably in 2015. I didnt have prior experience in painting just sketching and building things.
      The building things aspect helped a lot with putting pieces together and improvising with materials.
      Since you have painted and have a good understanding of anatomy you will be streaks ahead.
      The same principles apply in painting as in sculpting. Building up forms in simple shapes and refining them.
      I would reccomend water based clay for sculpting for 90 percent of the sculptures. As its easy to work with. It's like painting with your hands as it's kind of fluid. Whereas monster clay and oil based clay require setup, heating and cooling to work with. And when learning that is tedious and counter productive.
      If you can get some pottery clay, a mirror and try and do a self portrait or skull that's a great start to work from
