- This is more Zevon joy! Live on Dave from 11/8, here he is doing LG&M PLUS the song "Trouble" PLUS a short interview. Again, I do not own this but want to share his music with the world.
- Hudba
What a brilliant dark sense of humor - "caught the crew making a suicide pact".
Had the chance to meet him near the end of his life at the hospital and he was asked if he needed more pain meds, he quipped, "no, but i'll take it to go" . Still ahead of his time!
The transition between the two songs is so badass! Zevon rules.
💫💫
Warren deserves to be in the R&R hall of fame
This song is THE best use of the line "the shit has hit the fan" ever.
Agreed - my favorite performance of this song !
You can tell from Zevon's lyrics that he would have been a kickass detective fiction writer. His quirky, evocative lines just shimmer, (tough guys, easy women, fast dangerous car rides..wow) the images are all there in the music...
he was an avid reader and one of his primary genres of interest was detective fiction, which he said influenced his songwriting, so you're right on
The king of alliteration
I saw this tour when it played an intimate basement club in S.E. Portland, sitting just spitting distance from three of my musical heroes: Warren on piano, Timothy B. Schmit of Poco and The Eagles on bass and backing vocals and Dan Dugmore from Linda Ronstadt's band on guitar. That night Zevon performed the most outrageous song segue ever, going from an audience-confounding cover of the Tom Jones hit "What's New Pussycat?" to his own iconic anthem "Lawyers Guns and Money." Mad as a Hatter!
Saw that to in St. Louis & after the two encores we kept chanting "Warren" over & over once the lights went up & almost ten minutes later he popped out, did Mohamed's Radio😎😎😎
He hi fived me TOO😎😎😳😍😜😎😎
I seen that tour in Chicago, park west. I miss that guy.
❤
A lot of people always forget the impact Warren's songs had on everyone. Sometimes shocking, sometimes controversial, but always tinged with a little dark humor just so we can laugh at ourselves. A true American composer that will be missed.
One of Bob Dylan’s favorite song writers!
Mad respect for a guy that was supremely talented, yet humble. His live performances were among the best.
He spent lots of time with his audiences after concerts. Very humble regular guy, absolutely no pretension!
Letterman is one of the best things that ever happened to music
You mean he didn't drink the Kool Aid,He marched to the beat of a different drummer ThankGod, What a genius!
Zevon, the great storyteller. He is missed.
RIP Warren. Great songwriter!. One of a kind
STILL get teary as I play his tunes....
♥
WZ one of the most underrated musicians in history..........what an awesome lyricist and man what a voice............WZ was the freakin man
I love you Warren Zevon! I've been singing your songs since I was 4 years old. RIP . The greatest singer/songwriter to ever walk the earth!
A life well lived , my friend
man what a song, what a performance of it, and what a terrific talent mr. zevon was,
he deserves the the rock n roll hall of fame induction, RIP
If nothing else, I'd love David just for his love of music & his musical tastes. I miss Warren & will always miss him. My favorite Warren memory is when I took my sis to see Warren Zevon in the early 90's. She didn't know who he was. I sat next to a guy who had his ears stuffed with cotton balls. I asked the guy if he had ear problems. He said "No. I always have to do this for heavy metal concerts." He was serious! Warren played the piano for most of the night and I still laugh today. Great post
"How was I to know she was with the Russians, too?" Hard to top that line.
“I was born down by the river where the dirty flows, and the cold wind cut through me, it cut right through my clothes” from Jeanie Needs a Shooter. That’s a good line too.
Andy in Oregon, I LOVE the segue here from Trouble to Lawyers Guns & Money.
RIP. Dave featured this on his tribute when Zevon passed.
Yep, this was a great one too, but you should have seen that Portland audience wondering why the hell Warren Zevon was singing "What's New Pussycat?"
This guy is a legend.
Long Live Zevon! Wish he was still around today.
That intro was badass.
Brilliance
Goddamn best seque ever!!
:)
So great.
Still the greatest expression of desperation ever written.
One of my favorite rock songwriters!
Ah the good old days Letterman gold.
The World's most Dangerous Band!!! I still remember that from being a very young child and watching this with my dad. CBS Orchestra is a lame ass name. And of course, Zevon forever!
I remember seeing him at the Party on the patio in Houston Texas. At the end of the great music concert. He said " No more encores my ride is here". He knew that he was dying then. He was on David Letterman talking about the names of his last 3 albums. Life will kill you. ☮️💜🇺🇸
Happy Birthday, Warren!
Love this - miss him!
Easily the best version of Lawyers Guns & Money, that double slap on the snare gets me everytime.
Hell fuck yeah dude. Incredible performance
One of the few artists I actually listened to.
Classic. Fantastic guitar riff and the chords are quite easy to play!
I think that NY Giants sweater belongs in the rock n roll hall of fame
it was an honor to see him live back in 96 man, spectacular show, RIP Warren Zevon
Thanks, tohostrat. And I agree with you regarding Dave. There's a good reason he's been a late night talk show host for nearly three decades.
Love this song and Warren, rip babe. You were a hard living dude.
Special soul you were, WZ. You’re so missed physically, but your art lives on!
You can tell warren and David were really good friends just watch the episode where David announces that warren died you can feel his emotion

LEGENDARY INTO
I love this so much! Even beyond this great performance, I think of the storied connection that he had with everyone at Letterman. I was just reminded of it while watching a recent video on the official Letterman YT channel. The rabbit hole lead to many places. This is one of them, haha. Thank you for posting this (14 years ago)!
He was loved and looked up to by many other song writers ,singers.

Thank you for sharing this. I did not understand and appreciate this talent when I was younger. This is just balls and bliss. Genius.
How bout Paul Shaffer and the world's most dangerous band! Tight af!
What a voice! I mean a unique American "voice" in the literary sense. Miss him.
Get me out of this! I hear this as a crim defence lawyer. God this is true art.
Warren actually filled in for Paul Shaeffer on David Letterman's show
"I caught the crew making a suicide pact." The dude was a cold steel genius. Warren, HST and Richard Burton for my Party Binge Team.
he will be missed
excellent r n roller! LOve Dave too!
Trouble ...... love it love him..
this song and werewolf s of London are two of my favorites
@toadbeacon If you're still looking, his first "real" album (the one titled Warren Zevon) has an amazing collection of song--"Poor Pitiful Me," "The French Inhaler," "Carmelita," and "Desperados Under the Eaves" are standouts, but they're all great. The last has one of my favorite couplets from any song:
If California slides into the ocean like the mystics and statistics say it will,
I predict this hotel will be standing until I pay my bill.
It is in a Rolling Stone magazine article. There is a link to the article on Warren's wikipedia page.
Warren Zevon is so good. RIP buddy.
Only saw him a handful of times. But one particular solo acoustic/electric set will stay burned in the best part of my memory banks eternally. The music never dies; it goes on....
"The Apocalyptic Kingston Trio Tour" - only Warren could come up with this.
It's always good to see good videos...
I built an emergency operating room in Tegucigalpa, Honduras 🇭🇳. It was a real send Lawyers, Guns and Money excursion 🤠
Zevon is a genius. So is Frank Zappa.
Thank you for posting this cliip.
Whatonna, did you hit the nail on the head, both times!

Thanks, tohostrat. And I agree with you about Dave. There's a reason he's been hosting late night shows for nearly three decades.

Warren Zevon back in old days.
Visceral and real
...one of my favorites too
Great clip. A great musician and a great talk show host.
Too bad neither one are with us any more.
Love Lawyers Guns and Money. Paul looks like hes having fun and enjoying it as well."
What a tremendous guy. I saw him play a gig in Miami at a book convention. Other members of the band were the great humorist Dave Barry and Steven King. Now thats a weird band. Send lawyers, guns and money. What else do you need?
Happy Birthday Warren
love
