  • This is a 3minute film of the bullnose entrance and locks which connect Preston Marina with the river. It includes aerial photos of the dock as it was in its heyday and of how it looks today.
I was lucky to be there when the swing bridge opened to allow entrance to a boat. Many great ships have passed through these locks since the official opening of The Albert Edward Dock on 25th June 1892 when it was the largest single dock in the country, if not also in Europe.
The Preston Digital Archive on Flickr is, of course, the best place to see archive photos of these ships and of Preston Docks and The Ribble.

Happy memories when I was a kid, busy back then, always something to entertain me, even learned to drive there!

Growing up in the sixties, the area around Mackro and the motor park was called the floods for obvious reasons, now that the river is no longer dredged the silt is building up fast, but the same amount of water still comes up the river with every tide, eventually it will reclaim all the flood plain.
