  • Were back in the shed after a couple weekends off messing about at shows. This week we finally get the cylinder mounted and try out our special carrot bolt install tool.

    Genius idea regarding the cylinder bolts 👌

    Hi Norman. Nice to see you at Fairford. Just to confirm I always put your hammer back when borrowing it at South Cerney so it is not my fault you cannot find it in the shed!! Great videos. Keep them coming.

    More important the cross head doesn’t move up and down in the slide bars which would put a rocking motion in the bore, that could have the effect of wearing top and bottom of the bore.
    The boiler guy I know tack welds a bar to the carrot bolt to get them in place.

      @@HankyAttack Thanks, welding them on a long bar was my first thought.
      The slide bars were previously heavily shimmed to get it to run without piston rod to bend or push pressure on the bars. Thats the next job now is to remove the way shaft bracket to get it lined up better. Needs to be shimmed up so I can do away with some shims.

    I wouldn't worry about trying to shim the cylinder up, its common in piston engines for the cylinder and crankshaft centres to be offset and is known as a Desaxe arrangement, has some advantages. great channel, thanks for recording it.

      @@danproctor15 Would be good to leave it as is now without having to shim so that sounds like the way to go. Will likely fit the rest of carrot bolts and tighten it down. Thanks for watching

    You always end up with jobs that take 2 steps forward and 1back lol. Nice little gadget to get the bolts through the boiler😁👌

    Looking good!
    I think you'll struggle to get a proper seal with a slither of extra gasket down one edge
    But 20mm difference over 1600 is less than 1deg so isn't going to make a whole lot of difference? 🙂

      @@fowler_steam Thanks!
      I think you’re right. The height was never the main issue so going to leave that alone. 👍

    Hi I would tighten the bolts to the rear of the cylinder that will bring it down better not to extra pieces of gasket, then start taking measurements .

    I would have thought whatever you do the cylinder is going to want to sit on the barrel because they are both on a radius so it would'nt want to sit in a different place. Has the boiler had a new barrel at some point, if so might it have been rivetted on out of square which is giving you the vertical and horizontal alignment problems?

      @VintageIronuk  Před měsícem

      @@martyncozens5654 yes the engine had a new barrel. Either the barrel was riveted out of square or cylinder was machined wrong hard to say. It’s such a small amount it needs to move you can make up the difference between the two with a thick gasket like we have done. The boiler was remade 2inches to long so I’m going to go with the boiler a bit out. It only take a small movement to adjust that bar at the crank end. Unless it moves back when I fit the rest of the bolts I think the issues now fixed.
