  • First off, apologies if I mispronounced anything. I'm used to knowing how with Japanese, but Korean names spoken in Japanese fried my brain a bit. Second, I hope you enjoy the video! Tower of God had me hooked basically since the end of the first episode and I can't wait until we see more and more of this mysterious world. As always feel free to let me know what you think about the series and video.

    Even though the world building is great, the thing I love most about Tower of God are the very realistic, nice and likable characters like Bam, Khun or Rachel.

    • @MrXandervm
      @MrXandervm Před 4 lety +6

      Meh, they are all generic character tropes.
      I'm not some authority on the subject so don't take my words as gospel, but:
      Bam is just the generic "I'm very nice, weak and humble, fish out of water kind of guy who is actually really strong for some reason but i don't know it yet"
      Khun is the generic intelligent, brooding, sad backstory kind of guy who needs to "open up" and "learn to trust others"
      And we literally know jack shit about Rachel, other than that she wants to go to the top of the tower for either a shitty reason ( see the stars ), or a reason we
      don't know about yet.
      Haven't even talked about the annoying lizard guy, who needs to shout everytime he does something so that we the audience know he is the comic relieve guy and "see look guys!? see how wacky he is! look! he cares about bam! such a tsundere".
      Then you have lizard girl, who is mad. Thats her thing. She is cocky and angry, because she wants revenge. Makes sence, but does not really make her likeable ( though, i don't really think the other characters are also nice and likable ).
      I just don't really like them. And thats fine, maybe the serie is not for me. But imho, the characters are the thing i like the least about Tower of God. Though to be fair, i also don't really like the world.
      Look at hunter x hunter. The world feels like a real place.
      Same for one piece, or naruto, or bleach.
      The tower seems like some weird challenge tower, where they need to do these arbitary, lame tests ( the deathmatch was alright, but the main characters kinda didn't do shit , the door test was boring. the water test was boring ), but wait, now it's a magic school! where they need to be trained at certain roles and do equally weird tests ( get 10 friends? really? ). Imho, the story and world are all over the place, and it does not really feel grounded.
      Nope, not a fan.

      Anywho, part of that all over the place feeling for things is that the Anime is trying to compress 70-some chapters into a standard 13 episode season. That means it has a lot of ground to cover and, while I'm sure they'll cover the stuff they've skipped later, that pace could be to the detriment of the world-building and so on. Just remember that this is basically the prologue of the story, and the juiciest bits, both of it and of the series as a whole, are yet to come.

    Webtoon reader here. I have to say, I am impressed with this video. The way you understood the world in place from the few episodes shown so far is incredible, and a lot of the info you mention is stuff people don't think about until later on in the series. A+
    One thing I will recommend tho, is that eventually (if you are interested anyway) you could dive into the wiki as it has info given to the readers by SiU about the world at large with topics like (Races, Air vs Shinsu, etc). The wiki does have spoilers tho so be careful about what you search.

    • @zomfgroflmao1337
      @zomfgroflmao1337 Před 4 lety +1

      @@TazerLad It is kind of a problem, because some things are not really spoilers but additions to the world that the story never touches on, so it never gets explained or expanded on. SIU does so in his personal blog that gets some translations and there are a lot of things that aren't really spoilers, because seen if you read the webtoon you wouldn't know these things, only if you dive into those blog posts or dive into the wiki. One thing as an example is a fact about Raks environment, and I'm not even sure how serious SIU is with this explanation, that says that Raks race simply lived in a place where the only other thing that lived there were turtles, so if it wasn't his race it had to be turtles, because there was nothing else. This is information that is never revealed anywhere but SIUs blog and you can't even tell if he is serious or just kidding around.
      The first idea of SIU was to create a universe and the tower was only one of the things in it, but I'm not sure if he is still following that or changed his mind because Tower of God is already vast enough that he will probably never have time to fit any other story in his universe idea. He even rewrote some things himself, like the end of the crown game in the anime, but never changed it in the original story. I always felt that SIU is closest to Oda, both with vast ideas and world in their mind but not enough time on earth to be able to finish it all.
      (I think Tower of God has a lot of similar strengths with One Piece, both have this ethereal target (One Piece/Top of the Tower), completely different 'worlds' with culture biomes etc (islands in One Piece, floors in Tower of God), similar world building and a giant cast of character that all kind of stay relevant (more so in Tower of God than One Piece).)

    Have been reading this series for almost a decade and I can say that I am fairly pleased with how the anime turned out, even though I wish they would have extended the season to include a few more episodes. The mystery and vastness of this universe (in and out of the tower), coupled with the good plot is what makes it fun for me to read, and unfortunately the anime skipped some of the set-ups for future events/ intrigues/character development, etc. I think the viewers of this anime get a good taste of ToG, but my main fear is that due to the limited content included in the 13 episodes of this season viewers might not get to experience the essence of this story. Manhwa readers also have access to weekly blog posts where the author shares tidbits of info that are not included in the anime. Hopefully with the success of the first season, the second season will have a better budget and the story will include what I have mentioned. Also, many anime fans are not aware of this, but the story takes place in the Talze Uzer Story Universe, which is explored in the author's previous works that are now unavailable, but salvaged by fans. All I can say about the universe outside of the tower is that it seems as impressive as the tower itself, but with new mysteries, powers, etc. Overall it's just a fun story to be into and a good, passionate community.

      don't get me wrong, I'm enjoying the show. but I'll explain the obvious comparisons and shortcomings.
      this first arc is the 'hunter exam arc'. everything except the world-building is done poorly in comparison to it.
      HxH was the first thing that came to mind when I saw a crowd of mishmash random elites from around the world taking a multitude of wacky/lethal tests to get 'permission to climb the tower' (instead of a hunter license).
      the characters are pretty lackluster in comparison, and the roles they play are ripping off HxH as well. to go through them:
      "Gon but he's chasing after Rahel instead of his dad" -this main character is hollow, much more hollow than gon.
      "Killua with a suitcase" -this guy does some interesting stuff so I'll put him on an equal level to Killua at best (as a character).
      "Leorio but he's been turned into a brawn>brains lizard man" -who fulfills his role as comedy relief in a much more immature way than Leorio did.
      "Kurapika but he's a brawn>brains lizard girl" -who's trying to avenge 'her mum' instead of 'the entirety of his clan'.
      "nice Tonpa" -stirs the pot around, getting some interactions happening early on.
      I hope you've opened your eyes, as I said, I enjoy the show, and I'm hoping they'll change it up once this arc is over. but for now, it's a HxH bootleg.

    My favourite thing to do with Tower of God (and its lore) is to nitpick it (much to the chagrin of my gf).
    For example in episode 5 when Yu Han Sung says 'that the purpose of the tests is to maintain the safety of the Tower', I started talking about how the tests have been (in order), testing whether you fear death (floor 1 test) , whether you are bloodthirsty enough (the deathmatch), whether you were powerful enough (wall of shinsoo) and whether you were impulsive and made spontanious decisions based on little to no information (door test). Thus I concluded that they wanted powerful, spontatnious, bloodthirsty maniacs who don't fear death.. and that the people who run the tower seem to think these are traits that will help ensure the safety of the tower (because powerful, spontatnious, bloodthirsty maniacs who don't fear death are all trustworthy traits!).. or that Yu Sung is coming up with a load of bs and he thinks Lero-Ro is an idiot... or Yu Sung is an idiot...

Whoever is the most worthy or capable are typically going to be the ones who pose the most risk to the saftey of the tower as they possess the greatest ability to effect (negative) change (i.e. harm). Ironically, if minimizing risk is all they want, then you don't need testing at all, since leting no one through is the most simple and reliable method of minimizing risk.
      Or to make an analogy. A sports stadium has a bomb threat made against it. To minimize risk you probably should cancel all future events, or if that's not possible, you should at least set up security to check whether anyone or anything entering has bomb (making) material. What you don't do is run a bomb making competition in the premises to select who is allowed to enter.

      "Dangerous to the Tower" doesn't mean powerful, it means that someone has both enough power to change the Tower and the ideas to do so. If you're just bloodthirsty, powerful, not afraid of death, etc, you'll fit perfectly with the current system of the Tower, even reinforce it. But someone like Baam, who not only has an extreme amount of potential, _but also does not like how the Tower currently is,_ is dangerous to the status quo and thus must be weeded out and stopped before he gains momentum. That's partially what the tests are for, especially the early tests.

    You seem to have some misconceptions about what was shown in ToG thus far.
    Firstly, the society outside the Tower is not less developed than the one inside the Tower, there were symbols removed from the inside of Bam's cave that have great relevance to the overall story. You could say that Bam's cave was made for him for a certain purpose, not that it is indicative of the world outside; in addition, you could also say that the cave has been tainted by someone else visiting it over the years.
    Secondly, Shinsoo is the water/air/force of the Tower, it is really hard to explain but when you hear about the ages of people in the Tower just remember that Shinsoo allows for those ages to be as they are. Bam did not become Shinsoo, it is explained later but there is a lot more to Shinsoo then meets the eye. There is a moment that the anime skipped where Ren (Bam's Wvecontroller teacher) tells Bam that it took him 2 years to make one Shinsoo bang and he was called a genius, but Bam managed to make one in under 2 weeks. This is a very important scene and it angers me that they left it out, this along with dialogue from Black March and Headon were cut that has extreme importance to the overall story. At least Headon's dialogue may be seen later, but remember with Headon there are no accidents he is old and wise.
    Thirdly, the Administrator is a vague term it is implied that all Administrators were placed in the Tower by the Tower's creator to sorta rule over it; with Administrators on the top having more control than those on the bottom. Early in the manwha it is revealed that the King of the Tower made an agreement with an Administrator to become the sole ruler of the Tower, there is more lore but that is in spoiler territory. (I only want to fill in gaps left by the quick nature of the anime.) You can think of Administrators as being the body of the floor itself and the Shinsoo inside the floor is directly regulated by them, there are only like 20ish beings in the Tower that Administrators can't control unless those being want to be controlled. This has to do with the original purpose of the Tower, which is explained by Khun but did not make it into the anime; however, it has more relevance in later chapters so I will not speak on the topic any further. Also, sometimes "administrator" is used as a term for those conducting the floor tests this of the Administrators themselves, you will see this very soon but it is a subtle clue and many overlook it.
    Fourthly, the outside ring of the Tower is so big that each floor has its own kingdoms, all under the King of the Tower of course. This area is hard to traverse but it is even harder to travel between floors on the outer section of the Tower, hell even in the inner Tower it is hard to manually move to another floor. Guides are needed to find the path, we saw this the Evan guiding Yuri to the Floor of Tests which is the second floor. So, everyone who thought that Bm was still on the first floor is wrong we are currently on the second floor. Also, think about the timing it has been several weeks since Bam has seen Yuri meaning manually going from the 1st to 2nd floor takes a long time. So, just as a brain teaser think about this "How did Yuri know to go to the 1st floor of the tower to see Bam enter the Tower?" It's said in episode one and expanded upon later, but really cool lore about someone extremely powerful.
    Fifthly, the dialogue at the beginning on ToG is only applicable to certain people; yet, the statement about everything being up at the top is applied to everyone. You were right in a sense climbing the Tower is the opportunity but the question is for whom is it an opportunity for. The anime skipped the part about the King of the Tower's agreement, in which he stopped everyone from finishing the Tower and allowed Regulars to climb. (I encourage you to really look at my wording here, as it is revelations that give a whole new meaning to the story that are not directly stated.)
    I love Tower of God and I have read it many times, so I know a lot about it. In knowing so much about the story I can say that the anime really needed more episodes. A lot of really important subtle clues to things are either changed, removed, or conveyed in a different less effective manner. I must say that reading the manwha is the only way to see the full picture, as the anime does not correctly show everything; yet, it is still a good watch. I have only shown you the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the in-depth lore of Tower of God.

    Adaptation is mostly just to get viewers attention(as it always is). They're rushing through a lot of stuff and skipping a lot of info to cover 78 chapters in 13 episodes. Its an average adaptation with very good ost but as a webtoon fan, Its very underwhelming compared to the original source material. I highly recommend the webtoon, early art is bad but that also get much better starting from season 2.

    The adaptation isn’t as good as it could have been and I have some of my own criticisms of it but a lot of the “tower of god is bad” videos miss a lot or they’re just not paying attention. It’s not the shows fault you weren’t watching khun having a hard time his bag or come away with bam just being a normal boy even tho it’s routinely drilled into your head that irregulars are a big fucking deal

  • @pyrosianheir
    @pyrosianheir Před 4 lety

    Having read the source material - I can't wait till they get to some of the best stuff, which is yet to come. Looking at it from the perspective of "The entire first season is just the prologue," gets me really excited, since that means that whatever season 1 ends up being, however rushed it may be (and with them cramming 70-some chapters into 13 episodes, it REALLY is rushing), there's a good chance that the later better stuff will be given the proper time. (or so I hope).
    That said, the one change they've made that actually rubbed me the wrong way, even if it does make sense for pacing, was removing the "Safe Zone" in the Tag test that just started, and Khun's plan for the test. The starting zone, where they left Shibisu sit as bait for Best Boi Quant, was supposed to be a safe space, where Quant isn't allowed to enter. It's actually a plot point for Bam's team taking the test that he can't, but it wasn't mentioned in the show. Edit - removed complaint about Khun's plan. The adjusted one worked well enough. Shouldn't have complained till I saw all of it. XD

    This is still just the prologue. Not even close to the beginning of the story and honestly I'm not big on series in either reading or tv or movie material that take too long to get the ball rolling. Tower god took a long while to get moving for me and while the adaption certainly tried to keep things visually interesting I can't say tower of god was anything good. Maybe they'll have beater luck with god of high school. At least in terms of action since that's mainly the reason my old Korean buddies recommended it. Much like manga there's a lot of stories out there and not everything is gonna be a massive hit or the next dragon ball or that one that gets a SAO lucky break where it aired during a certain point of entertainment history that got people's attention. With the whole covid19 situation on top of all this causing delays and potential cancellations cause time is mony as businesses right now I'm in the process of looking back on series I missed out on or overlooked or just didn't know about till recently. I was pretty disappointed with the adaptation but that's more because the original is just really dam good than because it's a bad anime, It's probably a good idea to just watch the anime first then go read the webtoon if you want to really enjoy both.
    ...if I had to bring up a specific reason for it i think it's because the artwork in the still image version manages to give a strong sense of movement and impression of intent through it's use of color/layout/etc to draw your attention through everything in a scene while the anime has a surprisingly hard time doing anything of the sort...I haven't actually watched enough of it to figure out the reasons why but going from what I've seen and the clips here they just straight up don't know how to show movement and makes do with simply putting distracting business all over the screen or *_shudders_* speed lines (and other similarly cheap to animate methods).
    oh! they also changed some pretty important shit right off the bat but you're GOING to need to edit a lot to make an anime out of something like TOG so they could easily have been trying to smooth out changes they made further down the line and/or were trying to keep more in line with changes much farther down the road in the manhwa...assuming they actually sat down and planned things out...I really hope they actually sat down and planned things out.
    every other time there's been a really disappointing show made out of something I really liked and I stuck with it I regretted it later so I'm probably not going to remedy my lack of knowledge here.

    • @evernewb2073
      @evernewb2073 Před 4 lety

      oh yeah! forgot one other hugely important little problem: the people doing the translation work for the anime are absolute garbage at it to the point where a lot of it was just plain illegible even when you already know what's supposed to be in the scene...hell if I know why so many anime (and more to the point manga) flat out refuse to use fan translations when even the worst of those are at least on par with the average professional job...only thing I can figure is that it's a liability issue but it would HAVE to be far less work for far better quality for far less money to just check an already finished freely offered no-strings-attached fan translation complete with the translator(s) in question often offering to help fix any problems free of charge.

      don't get me wrong, I'm enjoying the show. but I'll explain the obvious comparisons and shortcomings.
      this first arc is the 'hunter exam arc'. everything except the world-building is done poorly in comparison to it.
      "Leorio but he's been turned into a brawn>brains lizard man" -who fulfills his role as support and comedy relief in a much more immature way than Leorio did.

      The "hunter exam arc" part of the ToG id basically the entirety of season 1, which serves as a prologue. Whilst there are things i think season 1 does better than season 2, most people seem to vastly enjoy season 2 to season 1. That's the case for the webtoon though and i have no idea how well season 2 will be adapted, if it ever does get adapted.
