    The Spratly Islands are an unremarkable scattering of reefs and sandbars in the South China Sea. But, rich in resources and claimed by six countries, could they be the trigger for the world's next major conflict?
    "We call our Kalayaan Island group the submerged Saudi Arabia of the Philippines." Eugenio Bito-Onon is mayor of a seemingly innocuous islet municipality, home to just 150 residents. But with the region crosshatched by important shipping lanes, the undersea bed replete with oil and gas, and the marine life furnishing vast fishing grounds, the surrounding waters are simmering with tension. China, the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Taiwan and Brunei all lay claim to a portion of the territory, in a little-known diplomatic contest that for decades has regularly brought the area to the brink of war, and put it firmly off-limits to Western media. "China is doing a lot of things besides bullying our fishermen and small navies", explains the mayor as he points out a Chinese development on a small atoll known as 'Mischief Reef'. Here, the only way to secure the land is to occupy it. So as competing claimants continue to build, could this high-stakes game of island Monopoly erupt into a fully fledged conflict?

    Japan, Korea, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Brunei,... should cooperate strongly to secure the Maritime Region of South China Sea. Watch out for China's bottomless greed to colonize the entire area by force. China doesn't respect International Maritime Law. Be cautious, the Philippines. If I were the President of the Philippines, I would immediately reinforce and secure these islands with all measures including more military equipment and personnel. How long do you last when you are blocked by China Navy Ships? The Philippines' President must have been slept for a long night without knowing the danger is waiting.

      +KoolBreeze420 Because no one else cares. You act as if China has swallowed up ALLLLL the dam reefs in the South China Sea..?? lol China is a massive populated region on earth and needs to ensure it's survival by going out further in it's territorial waters to fish, mine and protect. Because of it's great ingenuity, they have built a small island to help in the exportation and importation of raw materials, food and resources by even putting a landing strip there. But because of "good ole boy" USA wanting to dominate the world, and continuing to threatened the island and China's survival, China has now moved missile defense systems into the area and is garrisoning the island today. China has repeated that it is in no way impeding the flow of commerce by other nations who feed from the same sea. If China was doing this in the Atlantic, Pacific, etc...they may be a cause for action. But because Amerikkka is such a war whore, China has to defend itself.

    People need to understand something that the media has failed to mention. China is bigger than any of the other countries involved in the dispute. Both by sheer number of people and also by total land area. This means that we ought to be entitled to more of the sea around us. The sea will allow us to feed our citizens, to fuel our citizens, and to travel (most of China is landlocked). These smaller countries are already surrounded by sea, and do not have the burden of as many people or as much land. I'm not sure why China is being labelled the selfish one in this conflict.

    • @clarkdave
      @clarkdave Před 10 lety +3

      Nonsense. As if you're saying that China shouldn't have the need to respect the sovereignty of each country because they need the sea more than we do.
      Tell these to the landlocked countries, maybe you'll get the same sympathy.

      if there is, i have yet to heard of it. but i know u r right because whenever a NATO nation is threathened or attacked, entire NATO declares war on it. In ASEAN, its the opposite, in fact Thailand & Laos always have border disputes, not to mention coups & riots in Burma & Malaysia. Everyone using China as an excuse to up the arms race. (Singapore is world's 3rd behind USA & Israel in Military spending) Even during natural disasters (e.g 2004's Tsunami), ASEAN nations used it as excuse to enter enemy territory offering humaratarian aid but hidden agenda is to practise their military might to show off/scare other Asean neighbours. As u can see in this docu, instead of banding together against China, Vietnam steals an island from Phili... And the annual Haze pollution from man-made Indonesia is making ASEAN & even Australia crazy & sick! TBH, Asean wld be eaten up by China after they reclaim Taiwan by force, because China has always used force to expand its territory. Its in our history & blood. Sry for long comment haha!

    South China Sea problem is quite straightforward: It was China’s land, then UN passed a new law which allows other countries to claim parts of the sea. Consequently, this caused the dispute. China was more developed hundreds of years ago in terms of maritime technology and sailed to the UNINHABITED islands in the South China Sea, made a map of it, and claim the territory. For years, no one in the world disputed China’s ownership of the islands and South China Sea until: 1. Oil was found. 2. Marine resources became scarce, 3. UN passed a law, which allows each country to own certain water around its land. However, UN did not address the potential problem: someone could have claimed the water within that boundary. If Columbia could claim America inhabited by Indian, China could not claim uninhabited islands? Please be fair. China has a legitimate claim, and it is NOT bullying others for no reason. Do you know whom we should blame? British, American...so call traditional superpowers who were ruling the world and set up rules without any consideration of history, like what they did in India and middle-East.

      What are you expecting, that China is going to share because taking it all would make them look greedy? If you look at the map it should be evident that China has the least right (geographically) to claim to any of these islands to begin with. They are pushing this shameless claim because they have the power to do so.
      Another factor is that these oil reserves are not thoroughly explored yet, so no one knows exactly where all the good fields are. China may not actually want the entire South China Sea for themselves, but by disputing everything they can preserve the right to claim anything that turns out valuable. If they start reckognizing the claims of the other countries and it turns out that's where all the good stuff is, they'll be kicking themselves for having backed down simply because of a handful of soliders sitting on shipwreck.

      @adgw1423 Před 9 lety

      Bt Tan Not so sure about that. The eastern portion of the Philippine archipelago (Palawan) comes quite close to the Spratlys. Besides, Malaysian claims would be at least as close as Brunei's.

    • @adgw1423
      @adgw1423 Před 9 lety

      Depends on the islands and reefs we're discussing. Philippines is closer to some of the eastern ones such as Half Moon Shoal than Brunei or Malaysia to the southern ones. Malaysia juts northeast of Brunei.
      Here's a map for reference:
      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spratly_Islands#/media/File:Mapspratly.jpg
      It's ironic how this has made such strange bedfellows. China and Taiwan have largely been working together on their claims, while communist China and Vietnam have killed over them. It's too bad they can't just cooperate and reach a sharing agreement. However, with so many parties involved, it will never happen. China is trying to get a feel on US resolve in the area. The answer Beijing is getting is not what they were hoping for. Given how vital this shipping lane is to world trade and the number of US allies in the region, I wouldn't expect Washington to turn a blind eye on this anytime soon.
