We went to Greece in 2014. We were there for 10 days and visited many different cities. We rented a car and had a wonderful time exploring as much as we could. We drove A LOT! Nafplio was my favorite place to visit. This video brought back so many lovely memories of that trip ❤ Ty for posting!

My dtr & i were just in Nafplio as well. What a lovely town. Stayed in Aetoma hotel, no elevators, but delightful staff & delicious bkfst. Take hop on & off bus to Palamidi Fortress, boat to Bourtzi castle

I went there on your advice. Love that place and am heading back this year! When I was there, they had a hop on hop off bus that runs around the whole town and runs up to the castle. You take hop off at the castle and the driver will tell you when he'll be back. I think it is about an hour which gives you plenty of time to explore the castle. I hired a driver to take me on excursions and back to Athens (rather than public transportation). It was worth it.

I love Nafplio… the absolute workout of trekking up-to the Palamidi Fotress, the little boutiques, the restaurants (I think one of my all time favourite gyros grills is there 🤤 ) a gorgeous Italian Gelateria just around the corner from the port. But, you’ve mentioned Tolo for the beech a couple of times. My recommendation is that you base yourself at Tolo for your holiday for exactly that beech, wonderful during the day with great views, amazing ambience in the evening and night with those beachside tavernas and that sunrise in the morning… WOW. And if you’re not up for car hire (like me) then there are regular buses from and to Nafplio which is literally pocket change.

When you go there you have the feeling that you want to stay forever.
A week it would be nice because they're a lot you may see in the area. You may organise a lot of day trips,
for example to the nearby island of Spetses.

A couple of years ago, I took the whole family (ex-wife and 4 young adult kids) on an epic tour of Greece. We visited Athens, Santorini, Rhodes (and Istanbul on the way home). All amazing. But our favourite was Nafplio, and that's saying a lot. The wonderful walking path from Nafplio to Karathona beach is an adventure on its own. Would return in a heartbeat.

I did it last summer & doing it again. To get to Nafplio best way to get there?? Do you go from Athens to Nafplio? Do Northern Greece at same time?

We were there last year at this time. Somewhat quiet town. It actually felt Americanized in the square but nicely so. It didn't seem foreign. The ice cream was great at the shop located on the left just before the area where we hoped back on the tour bus.

In Greece all people that have a minimum of culture acknowledges that greek modern cultural identity is the fruit of deep ottoman influence. Greece, Albania, North Macedonia, Bosnia, and to a certain extent Croatia and Serbia, are the western frontier of this influence. You find it in the language, in the food, in certain superstitions, in the music (think about the odd rhythms, certain instruments). But it is also true that ignorant and/or ultranationalists Greeks will always do everything to deny it, to refuse this idea and be offended when you mention it. Some towns like Trikala or Joannina are trying to take care if their ottoman heritage, are proud of it and promote it towards the tourists with museums, explanations written here and there. Other towns, like Nafplio, not really, even if you can see here and there clear ottoman signs (fountain, two mosques).
