    I am very happy with kiln dried pine shavings. Messy to use but they keep my boys dry and clean. 😊

    This is a super helpful video - I had to switch from fleece to a loose substrate in my piggies' hay area (2x2 c&c grids) as I was struggling to keep up with the maintenance of the liners I was using. This definitely helped me come to a decision :')

    I imagine this would be just as true for Guinea Pigs as it would for zebra finches, but I recommend stirring wood and paper bedding every day to aerate the bedding so moisture doesn’t get trapped in the bottom and mold/rot. This also makes the top layer less dirty between the weekly replacement.

    Such good information! I find that a slightly used fleece works better than brand new maybe because it is washed more the water soaks in better.

      @GuineaPiggles  Před 3 lety +2

      Yes, you're right. They need wicking which means washing several times to gain better absorbency.

    This was great!
    After having my piggies around 4 months now I have settled on fleece, (a mixture of guinea dad and others) I put a large cat litter tray with a layer of pine shavings and hay under their hay bags. Since doing this they tend to predominantly pee there and in one other area which I put additional pee pads/fleece. Now that I’ve got it all sussed out it makes life a lot easier as I only have to do a big clean once a week!

      Hi Claire - we thought this might be really helpful as I haven't seen it done before. Obviously we used a lot more water than they would pee but it does show the absorbency really well. Your setup sounds great - a litter tray under the hay works really well. Fleece is what we used to have and we did recently change to kiln dried pine shavings (although we are going to try hemp again as we really loved it too). We changed because of the amount of washing but fleece is a lovely bedding :)

    We tried fleece liners at one point but one of our piggies, Peanut, who was usually mostly white, turned yellow. So we switched back to pine bedding.

    I’ve observed that Small Pet Select (my personal favorite brand) does not have a way to seal the package of disposable bedding once opened. Do you recommend sealing the bag after opened or transferring the bedding to another type of container?
    I haven’t yet run in to any problems with leaving the bag open, but I want to make sure that doing so is safe.
    I love your channel, website, and Facebook page by the way! You really empower me to provide the best life for my guinea pigs

    The pine has to be kiln dried in order for it to be safe 🥰

    • @GuineaPiggles
      @GuineaPiggles  Před 3 lety +2

      Absolutely correct - always use kiln dried if using pine shavings as it removes the oils that are a danger to guinea pigs :)

    The pine must say kiln dried . Just pine is dusty and will cause your piggy to get an upper respiratory infection. Vet bills are very expensive. She should have said this!!

    I’m nervous if my cage isn’t big enough I have two male guinea pigs and in the summer I have a giant outdoor cage but it’s so cold in winter I bring them in. I put them in a triple layer cage is it big enoug?

    • @GuineaPiggles
      @GuineaPiggles  Před 3 lety

      The levels don't make any difference as they need a single large space. I'm not sure what cage you have but some of the triple layer cages are designed with other small pets in mind and are not really suitable for guinea pigs as they don't like steep ramps. You'd be best with a one level cage that is as large as you can fit in the space you have but at least 160cm x 60cm and preferably larger. Have you thought about a C&C cage? guineapiggles.com/c-and-c-cages-for-guinea-pigs
