    White had the opportunity to block black from getting to the sides and black was able to secure the side earlier but did it at the very very end.

      It's a fair comment, but what you are describing is the later process to try to win a game which is to grab an edge to force your opponent to the xsq. Before trying to do that, there are lots of techniques to force your opponent. And the more you and your opponent knows these techniques the harder it is for each other to execute what u just described on how to win. That is why this game is always deceptively easy but actually involves very deep concepts of controlling your opponents mobility or legal moves :)

    hey im pretty new to the game and was just wondering... why play on a physical board instad of a touchscreen? it seems to me like they are losing a considerable amount of time turning the "pieces" (if that's how they are called)

    • @OthelloAcademy
      @OthelloAcademy  Před 10 měsíci +4

      Hi, it's "traditional" to playing on a board and flipping the discs since the start of the game. While technology has also been considered, its been deemed that the flipping is part of the "skill" involved of the process. Similar to international chess that still involves players physically moving pieces instead of just touch screen I guess.

    • @kylen6430
      @kylen6430 Před 3 měsíci

      Also, while I am not sure of the rules, but I speculate that if you happen to miss a piece to flip and press your clock, you lose that opportunity to claim that space.

    • @DavidKlausa
      @DavidKlausa Před 3 měsíci

      @@kylen6430 I was wondering what happens if you miss flipping a piece. Does the opponent point it out and hit the clock? It's not necessarily a disadvantage to "lost that opportunity to claim that space" so there could be an incentive to cheat if you "forget" to flip a piece you don't want to flip.

    • @HD-fy2wu
      @HD-fy2wu Před 2 dny

      @@kylen6430 There is indeed an illegal move played by White (8:26) where White places a piece and realizes that there is no piece he can flip, which is illegal according to the rule. According to the video, White just reverts the illegal move and plays elsewhere. So I guess the rule in Othello is not as strict as it is in chess.

      The easiest way to obtain one through rakuten perhaps or some of the online sales shops. I found one through a quick search here: item.rakuten.co.jp/jseller/js-7tjrl8xh/
      While there might be cheaper ways to get it, but it would not differ a lot from USD 50 just for the board alone and not factoring in shipping even if you bought it in Japan retail stores.
      Fun fact, typically when you debut at a World Championship, they give you one for free as memento too. However, due to covid, the World Othello Championship hasn't been held since 2019.

      its actually the moves before the corner sac that i appreciated, and the moves after. For instance, the one move at 3:48 is probably my favorite of the game, really taking into consideration what white wants to do, and poisoning their move. White's move after is extremely loud, but it shows just how much the initiative was swinging into black's favor at that point.
      also the sequence that starts at 5:54, forcing white to take the edge to make their own move quieter, which really seemed to swing the advantage to black. The corner sac not long after was just intuitive, clearing out all of white's mobility and hence moves, securing black as the driver, but what i really liked was the apprehension at 7:34. Sure black in that position could take the corner right away, and probably force another corner, but either way they would still have to fight on the right hand side of the board to secure the victory so they decided to delay capturing the corner and start that fight right off the bat. It really showed a level of professionalism and patience.
      honestly white was just outclassed here, possibly gave some advantage early on after the opening or was forced into a difficult position and was just unable to find the right defensive moves. The Stephenson is my favorite opening as black and this seemed like a very main line ish sequence, which may have been a poor decision. It's often unwise to go deep into theory against someone in an opening they're familiar with.

    3:48 C3 is the victory step for black player forcing white player cannot put D1... that's why I strongly recommend D1 for white player that request B4 then put the question back to black player...
