Wow Zac, your perspective on flatheads is really interesting. My ‘39 block was very well seasoned outdoors for decades before I restored it. It had a crack from the valve to cylinder and inside cylinder wall. I pulled the new sleeve and bored the block an additional 80 thousands . This fixed both issues. The sleeve in the one cylinder has not been a problem for over 43 years now! That cotter pin at the bottom of the flywheel pan doesn’t attract the oil, it’s there to maintain the patency of the weeping hole to allow the oil to drip out. Remember there is no rear main seal on this year engine.

Any chance you could show in detail a 32 ford steering box rebuild video ,nothing on youtube or anywhere else. So you would be a first. Keep up the awesome work

Thanks for the Q&A video. Great idea! I’d like to see you do a video on the things that can be done to help our flatheads from overheating. Does adding the cooling pipes to our radiator hoses help? Does adding a dual exhaust help etc. Keep the videos coming. Very helpful. 6:16

Thanks for watching! The coolant pipes help but it’s very minimal, they are more for looks! That sounds like a great video idea, a lot of topics to cover when it comes to overheating

Great info! With recently buying a ‘42 Super DeLuxe that’s been in the family since new, I am new to the flathead V8. Looking forward to your future Q&A videos!

Zac, I was told by an ‘old timer’ to put a little bit of Marvel Mystery oil in my gas tank to help reduce heat , plus help to lubricate the engine. Have you heard of this?

Yes I do it with every tank of gas, but I do it for the carburetor and valve seals

I'm in the process of rebuilding my mercury flathead and learning as I go. I ordered new valve springs from Isky and they are longer than the old ones. Apparently I need the short ones because I have 2 piece retainers, correct? I measured seat pressure with the Isky spring and came up with 100ish lbs. That's too much isn't it? I'm using a NOS camshaft I found at 2nd Gen Garage. Also have new adjustable lifters. Thanks, great video!

You calling me a farmer because I’ve been pinning cast iron cracks for 50 years? 😂

Whats your opinion of the last year of flatheads? I just bought a 53 mercury block looking to rebuild it for a 1950 F1

Have adjustable lifters in my 255 merc engine. Engine ran quiet now getting lifter clacking on some. Do these loosen up over time if so how do you prevent this.

Do you know anything about the Ford /Lincoln V8 384 cubic inch 1930 fork and blade flathead engine?

I know the basics about them, but never had the opportunity to work on one, they are hard to come by
