"Prepare" your dog before you go on a hike with medication against flees and (deadly) ticks. Incredible how your dog is reacting: she seems to read you. Beautiful the bond you have with your dog and vice versa.
I like to have a light that clips to the dog's harness and if you want to get fancy a gps collar if they get lost. A first aid kit for the dog is also a good idea.
HEY EVERYONE!!!!!!!!!!! I just wanna chime in and give a warning I almost learned the hard way.
One time I took my dog on just a long a hike out in the country and I was going to do a little fishing.
It was hot, and my dog also likes to dip into the water.
There is a large aqua duct canal that has fairly steep sides and it’s deep, fast moving.
I was letting her dip just up high along the side but she started pulling to get deeper, the way she was twisting around and once her neck was wet, and the collar, it started coming off her dang head.
She’s never swam before that time, so with the canal currents and not knowing if she would swim, now her slipping deeper I just climbed half in and grabbed her by the scruff and pulled her stubborn ass out.
I normally only use the harness when we hike, especially mountains and such.
So just please make sure your dogs collar is not too tight but won’t slip of if they get stubborn or it gets wet.
If your on cliff sides, or around other hazards, make certain the links, the clasps, the links on the leash, everything is super solid.
Harness is always recommended.
It just takes that one slip up to lose your pup.
They are worth the extra solid gear.
For real collars are not for hikes, they are only for simple walks. Pull at your dogs neck can cause insane neck damage, imagine if your dog falls and The only thing you have to save them is a neck collar, you might as well let them got because you could break their neck. My harness is perfect since it’s in the midddle of his back, meaning if he falls he would dangle safely and with equal weight under his BELLY, with no stress on the neck
Just get the harness no if ands or butts. All it takes is one slip and it's literally over.
@@theinternetissolastweek.2248 especially only having one connection on a regular collar, also, if your dog falls, you dont want it just hanging from its neck.......and, with a harness you can lower them down cliffs if needed.
I one day hope to have my foreign languages be as good as your English is. Wow! Great video too!
There would be so many dog pics in the comments section of your videos if us users could post ours. Enjoy your videos!
A good tip when getting dogs used to carrying things in their backpacks is to put some water bottles in for weight, that way if your dog gets tired you can give them a drink, or just empty out some of the water, to reduce the load.
Great tip!
....Ruffwear socks and boots are so wonderful...well made and Velcro is quality...super great for trails with lava rock...really love your vlogs.❣️🐾🎒🇪🇪⛺️🕶📕📷🖍🐾🎨❤️
You provided lots of great information and ideas.
My poodle mix refuses to wear boots, so I carry a product called Musher's Secret. It contains, among other things, beeswax which helps keep his pads from cracking or collecting snow.
Love the vid! I do search and rescue with my dog and a first aid kit focused to the dog is an absolute must. Vet wrap, saline, gauze, anti-diarrhea, tweezers, scissors, electrolytes and so on and so on
Wise
That is really neat!
Another well thought-out video. Thanks for sharing it with us.
Luna is beautiful. Thank you so much for making this helpful and important vid. When you showed the clip of how you made paw boots out of your socks, for each of Luna's paws, I cried! You and Luna make a great team. just subbed.
My French bulldog loves to hike with me and my husband. I can’t believe I have never thought of getting her boots! After watching this I am absolutely getting her some!
Great tips, thank you! Looking forward to this weekends hike 😀🐕
Thank you for making this video, it was super helpful and informative ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
This video is amazing, thanks for the tips 👌👍
And I will remember what to carry for my dog whenever I go hiking .
All great recommendations. Thanks for sharing.
Dog boots are a lifesaver!
Thank you for all the information. This is very useful as I'm getting my Dogo Argentino pup acclimated to going hiking and camping. I appreciate the time you took to make this informative video. You got my subscription to you channel.
Great video! Thank you for all these great advices!
Good information, as usual. You always come up with very helpful tips. Cheers.
So much great information here! Thank you!
Super duper inspirational and informative. Thank you so so much!!
She is SO CUTE!!! Thank you for this.
Bravo and thank you for all these important advices!
Excellent video! I love the idea of the pet muzzle during public transportation! Very smart.
cristal carreon muzzle yes if your dog bite people
I highly recommend a double H harness. It goes around their neck, under their chest, around the ribs, down the back, and around the belly. I’ve picked up my dog by the harness to get her out of creeks or crevices she’s gotten herself stuck in, and the weight was distributed evenly throughout her entire body
Excellent tips, thank you. And I hope you really enjoyed your through hike in New Zealand :)
Excellent video great tips and ideas thank you.
I think people tend to overthink a lot when it comes to hiking or camping with a dog. It's pretty straightforward to me, but it does vary a little with the dog breed and climate/season though. Nice video! :)
Hi Maiu, really good vid, thanks. Luna's so well trained! Love how you use rewards when you put the muzzle on her. She's a lucky girl :)
Fantastic tips! thank you :)
Thank You. You provided very useful information
You do great stuff! We have 2 dogs. I plan to hike with Baxter, my Kelpie. He is very smart and agile.
Robert from south Texas.
Thanks for the info. Very nice of you
Thanks for the extra tips
Hi Hiker: Thanks for all the information. You have obviously given this a great deal of thought . Your presentation is sure appreciated, especially since I'm considering getting a dog to accompany me on canoe trips. Thanks Brian 77
great info! you are a thoughtful caring dog owner
thanks for your advice i have 2 dogs and it`s always good to see how others deal with it
Very nice and informative video!! Thanks!
Again, great content!
I use Flexi leash exactly the same way! Great video!
Thank you for the video. Not too many videos go into detail for hiking/dog supplies. Liked and subscribed!
You are most welcome! Glad I could help :)
I use a dog backpack when my dog and I go hiking or camping. He's an Alaskan Malamute mixed with a wolf. (He's HUGE) He weighs a lot so just putting simple things in his backpack like his dish and brush along with other lighter things is no problem for him. Although it was so hard finding things in his size. And if you where wondering yes he was illegally bred but I gained custody legally and have a permit.
Thank you for this video!
It was nice to come back after a while, lovely idea for the whole dog hiking series :)
Thank you 😊
Buy extra velcro strips and sew them on so you can use those boots you bought. Maybe that would help. Thank you for this video great ideas and help.
Very informative. Thank you!
I just purchased the highlander sleeping bag. I hope it fits my german shepherd. I also carry a small plastic water bottle with a drinking flowing drinking tray on it. it folds up around the bottle when done. Great video. Thank you
great video, gave me some new ideas!
Glad I could help!
I don't have a dog yet, will get her next summer and I'm SOOOOO ready to hike with her once she'll be a adolescent/adult dog
I have to say your video is amazing. Thank you so much! I want to start hiking with my dogs, will start with a short 2 or 3 hour hike, we normally already do 30-40min walks. Will up that a bit for 2 weeks or so and then take them out hiking. I am really looking forward to it.
That sounds like a perfect plan!
Video 4 (which CZcams never informed me about)...Excellent and very informative (even though I don't have a dog)! All caught up now! :-))
Hello from Latvia. Thank you for video.
Ah! A fellow Estonian! Now this is a nice and VERY specific information i desperately needed. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
A while ago, like a month ago, I unsubscribed to all the channels I have subscribed to before, decided to start fresh. Decided to think twice before subscribing to things.. A big thumbs up, you are my first channel I joined again!
Aww, thank you for the support! And I am very happy to hear that my videos bring value into your life 👊
beautiful work all ways ur vids
Hello there neighbour! Greetings from Latvia! What a fantastic channel! I'm starting to get outdoors more often myself and I find you videos very helpful! Thank you for your work aaand you have another subscriber!
Welcome! :)
One ting you cold add is a cooler cover för The dog. It's kinda a vest that you make wet and it's cool your dog down. When it's dry you just wet it again.
It makes a lot of differential för my little shi tzu mix. I've seen that you let Lina cool herself in puddles or makes byt If you don't have that option
Thanks what a wonderful idea!! this will work great for me since I'm in Africa (Zambia) really hot here
Great advice!
Very helpful for my dogo canario, thanks a lot.
Great advise
Hahaha you're a good owner, cutting your socks for padding haha happy hiking !
Her story abut her need for dog boots. VERY real. My dog and I had to walk over extreme shale fro a little over a mile and it wore holes, YES holes, into his back paws. I did the same thing with my socks to try and correct the situation. Was not a good solution. I have hiked with dog boots ever since.
This is Super!! I really liked having bowls ready on pack. & This not to buy.. Happy Trails... Très bon champ de mouvement '21!!!... Be cool ..& be safe!
My dog sleeps in my sleeping bag with me. We keep eachother warm😊
Why do i fell in love with your accent after watching u 🥺😍
That's funny. One of my dog's names is Luna too :-) Thanks for the video!
I have never use a leash 100% of the time when hiking with my dog but it is important to still bring it in case some situation arises like a visit from a bear or mountain lion for example where you would want to keep the dog close. For after dark I have a head lamp that I strap around my dogs neck and put it on the red light setting so I can always see him and keep him close. For dog boots I would recommend getting them from site that specializes hunting dog supplies. in the US there is a site called gun dog supply that has all of that kind of stuff. You want the boots that have the teflon loop that the velcro strap goes through and then wraps back around onto its self. Also there is a great product called Mushers Secret that dog mushing teams use to condition the dogs pads and it works quite well. Thanks for the videos I'm enjoying your channel.
just found ur channel......you are delightful!!!! I live in the mountains of North Carolina and I take my dog [Astro; 90# chocolate lab] w/ me every where....your advise on equipment is spot on......i subscribed!
Yes retractable leashes and harnesses can be useful, however if you are training your dog not to pull on the leash they are the worst tools you can use because the actually encourage pulling, just FYI for newbies
Great video and Luna says life is so much better in dog hiking boots
Great vid.
You should check out the tactical dog vest/harness from OneTigris. I use that on my dog with Molle pouches and it’s great.
I also bring along a light collar for any night time potty breaks or around camp! :-)
i say a treat pouch is very important too!!!😁😁😁
very nice and detailed, thank you! I was wondering if you have experience with "cooling Harness" for hot weather
You can fix that velcro problem with a couple dabs of E6000 glue and a small bit of industrial velcro. Just glue the patches on wherever you want it to meet and clamp it or set something heavy on it while it cures.
Saw someone else mention this, but Ruffwear socks with the boots are absolutely amazing. I've never had the boots come off, even with my dog running and playing.
Ahaa, socks with boots! It sounds so logical but yet I haven't thought about it myself! 😀
Few notes about my experience with dog on hikes. I have 2kg yorkie (Hugo) which is an avid hiker, actually it never happened that he would be more tired than me and he can cover more distance than any average human. Although I have leash, he learned NOT TO PULL so only a basic collar is needed. I use leash only if there is some other dog in the vicinity or if we walk on a busy road etc. Hugo is trained to walk close to my foot on request and if I let him run around I can call him with special whistle and he obeys 100%.
I made a special bag which I can use to carry him (didn't need it though) and he can also sleep in it then I will wrap also my down vest around him. If it is really cold then he will gladly sleep inside my sleeping bag at my feet and we can warm each other which is quite cosy. Hugo is not barking too much but he can signal any movement around tent during the night.
Funny thing is when I pack for hike he will climb over my backpack as if he would insist that no way he would be left behind.
i also always have a dog first aid kit to! Another thing i use is the dog socks! I also use a dog coat when its cold in the daytime and and rain jacket for her for when its wet. But i dont need a dog sleeping bag cause i tried it and she didnt sleep in it and she would rath go under the blankets with me and lay right next to me! I always bring her sleeping bag and a extra blanket for her just in case but she usually chooses not to use it!
I use the flexi leash with my dog and its 😀was the best I always use it
Really helpful thanks. I have a little Jack Russell/Chihuahua cross :)
Nice video. I don't personally find a flexie leash very useful. If you see a rattlesnake, it would be hard to grab the dog fast enough. My dog is a genius (except she is an idiot about somethings. : ) ) I have not used booties yet but my hikes are pretty short. I think kind of requirement on any longer distance hikes.
Dog first aid kit
I put mine together with stuff I mostly got at Dollar store. 👍
Then there's my dog... I had hoped to get a dog to go hiking/camping with but alas, we cannot force others (dogs or children) to be something they are not.
Yes thank you so much for this!! I have a quick question: what do you suggest I do if I need to go into use the camp building facilities (like shower area or bathroom), where should I put my dog? Leave her tied up at my campsite or tie her outside the bathroom building? Thanks for all your other suggestions!!
In regards to sleeping bag. It's very easy to make one on your own.
There's an amateur tutorial on CZcams from a Brit guy. To sum up, you need a human bag, a scissor, a needle and non-natural thread. You can use natural thread, like whool or cotton, if you have to, but keep in mind that it will degrade over time.
What you want to do is create a tail that you fold over, in order to keep her bag shut and no cold air can get in through the cut end.
1. Turn the sleeping bag inside out. The throw away part is going to be the bottom end of the bag.
2. Now you'll create a tail that you'll later fold over to keep the bag insulated. Sow the first line 4 inches/10 cm before the part you want to cut away.
3. Cut it and remove the 4 inches/10 cm of insulated stuffing from the tail.
4. Fold the empty tail over first sowed line.
5. Stitch a second line to secure the empty tail with the bag to keep it secure and shut.

PS: A dirty sleeping bag insulate less than a clean bag. My watch can record temperature, so at night I place my watch in her bag at the coldest spot, to keep en eye on her warmth.
The sleeping bag stuff sack is going to be half full, so you can use the extra space to stuff it with an inflatable air mattress for dogs.
I use a trailer rope thin lightweight 4m long attached to harness with a knot at the other end. My dog is a westie small and fast. This helps when recall is not working.i just need to catch the rope!
Top tips. Maiu and Luna dream team. Stay happy.
The first time we did a day hike with our dog, we put the backpack on her and the dog looked at my spouse and I and you could see her thinking "You have a backpack and You have backpack and I have a backpack, cool!". She carries water bottles, matches and her water bowls.
this is so helpful! I'm starting backpacking with my whippet in preparation for a trip in november, where we'll be doing about 10 miles a day. how much would you recommend she carry in her pack? she weighs 29lbs.
Try around 15% of her body weight.
Thanks for you informational video. There must be a another solution than a flexible leach. Unfortunately I cannot gripp the plastic holder.
Anna your dog is verry tender, verry nice
I like to use poopbags that are biodegradable. For exmple out of corn. This just minimizes plastic waste!
yes, I also use biodegradable bags! Got to minimize this awful plastic use we are so accustomed to...
I suggest the song “Luna” by Lesha Svik.
My dog Marty sends Luna his regards 😃🐕🐾
Can anyone advise harness with pouches for smaller dogs (lakeland terrier & Staffordshire terrier sizes) I've looked through so many..I can't afford some of these ridiculously priced things..some great ideas, they're mother & daughter but I do have an older sleepingbag which I may look into making into 2 smaller bags or even use it as a mattress! Great video thankyou.
very sympathic!
Luna is so cute
So beautiful dog tho💖
I would reccomend getting dog boots from the company My Busy Dog, they make really high quality dog boots.
