Build A 5 Minute ON or OFF 12V Relay Time Delay

  • This simple time delay can either be an ON or OFF time delay by selecting relay contacts. Basic circuit charges a capacitor to turn on a low side relay. Switching point is determined by the FET gate voltage and sensitivity of relay. Relay turns on when relay and FET gate voltage are high enough. This provides an additional hot start time delay for my fridge.

    My fridge was having a problem with hot starts locking compressor. This provided an extra time delay. Another one will give me an interval on for my pump which only has to run a few minutes for syphon to start working.

    I used to turn to the 555 timer IC for most of my project but I do like yours cause it's simpler

    That's awesome, so there's no clock or anything it just takes time to charge the cap before it triggers

      I made a couple fans mounting three and four 12V computer fans for sleeping at night. Only an hour later temps can drop dramatically. I use only a FET capacitor and resistor for a time delay to turn them off. Just a momentary switch to turn them on. Even a FET has capacitance. You can touch your finger to the gate and 12V and it will turn on for an extremely long time. Of course, that finger can also deliver a zap which will destroy it. All FET need some resistor on the gate to pull it down so it doesn't float.

      @@opera5714 not many people in the world that understand even the most basic components enough to apply them to things in their life like you have. I've always been right on the edge of being able to do that. Rarely have I actually done it though. A while ago I needed to make a percentage indicator with four LEDs showing 25% 50% 75% and 100% based off of a 0 to 5v reference. With some experimenting and tweaking I did get the LEDs to light up as I needed. But it was kind of a pain and honestly easier to just relabel a 0 to 5 volt analog voltmeter as 0 to 100%.
