  • Perhaps more than the Ankh, the Eye of Horus or Wedjat is one of the most popular modern-day symbols of Ancient Egypt. Unlike the Ankh, its origins and mythology are known to us, and its appealing shape means it retains popularity among designers the world over.
In this video I examine its origins and dive down an Egyptological rabbit-hole, where I reveal a lie Egyptologists have been telling themselves for over 100 years.
For those interested in the Ritter paper: Ritter, Jim (2002). "Closing the Eye of Horus: The Rise and Fall of 'Horus-eye Fractions'". In Steele, John M.; Imhausen, Annette (eds.). Under One Sky: Astronomy and Mathematics in the Ancient Near East. pp. 297-323

I might! Not sure if they're worth a video on their own, but I might do something about newer hieroglyphs and their origins.

That... my poor dyscalculic brain just about exploded when you started talking fractions. That is staggering to me, I'd never even considered that or even heard it mentioned

It was something I'd first encountered ages ago, and when I started writing this video I was worried that it was too outlandish to be something anyone really thought, and I was misremembering. Happily, people will think anything about ancient Egypt!

I don't think that's a tear drop - look up pictures of falcons, many species of falcon have these markings. Saker Falcons quite distinctly so.

Great video and great channel (just discovered you) but respectfully I disagree with your supposition the Eye is not also a collection of fractions. The components from New Kingdom kingdom language do not evidence those symbols were wrong (absence of evidence...) but rather, as with many hieroglyph, probably did have a pre-eminent source from which they were developed (possibly the eye itself, as we may well be putting the cart before the horse). After all, this is the very basis of Ritter's thesis which I have also read and contrary to your assertion is far from convincing but imo was bias, over-complicated and even self contradictory in places. What we do know for sure is that the Ancient Egyptians were tremendous fans of instilling mathematical proportions in their ideograms and stone masonry. The fact the fractions would make up 63/64 is wholly suspicious as to an esoteric meaning and my view is actually, despite the populist stories that do indeed so often overwhelm the science (no frickin' aliens, please!), on this particular occasion the 'mental gymnastics' are very much fitting with the mystic teachings of the temple and probably right. After all, I'm sure you're familiar with the respective interpretations as when compared with Eye of Ra which is said to represent logic, whereas the Eye of Horus represents emotional intelligence; the fact that neither is 100% could be easily interpreted as saying "you cannot be completely one or the other, but should use both forms of intelligence in judgement of all things, even if it is just that tiny little 1%". I do believe Schwaller would agree. Sorry if my counter argument to Ritter's paper is a bit thin, haven't read it in years but if you would like to continue debate I will get a copy and we can try and debunk together. Thanks again for great video and channel

@@ArmchairEgyptology❤ Amazing video and PLEASE continue to do much more with much more success for you. But I do agree with the gentleman's argue. Also on your diagram of the eye was not completely completed😂The ANCIENT EGYPTIANS did NOTHING without PURPOSE. And I hope that we can agree their mathematical skills is still by far confounding to us in many ways. So a symbol so IMPORTANT and POWERFUL would not add such details to look pretty. I know nothing....but I refuse to believe they also had no other meaning for such a specific picture. I ❤U don't hate me. I hit like and subscribed to your channel 😅😅I really did.
