Ideally you would use a gear puller but if you are only doing the one then buying a puller is an extra expense. I've used several of your videos to help on my projects, and all have seemed to be very useful. Are you still tinkering with small gadgets and small remote control vehicles? You did a military tank build once that was a conversion from non-RC to fully functional RC conversion. After seeing your vid, I built 4 different tracked vehicles that worked out great. The problem I'm facing now is that I destroy nylon gears nonstop. So I've been switching to more durable brass gears, so your vid was really helpful for removal/installation and I didn't have to go buy a pinion gear puller. Long story longer, Thank you for sharing your projects!

    • @GrandadIsAnOldMan
      @GrandadIsAnOldMan  Před 5 lety +1

      The proper way to do it would be to buy a sprocket puller or pinion gear puller (just different names for the same thing as far as I know). They push the shaft through the gear whilst correctly holding the gear in place. If you study pictures of a gear puller you could probably make one yourself. The main thing is to support the gear while you punch the shaft free. In this video I am relying on the bearing of the motor to take the strain and basically destroyed the motor doing it. I knew that would happen but I only wanted to salvage the gear not the motor. This video may give you the general idea but it depends what you can find to do the job czcams.com/video/zgDD51pBAzs/video.html and heating the gear should help by expanding it enough to reduce the grip on the shaft.

    Have the same problem with my Parkside dril. I bought for £!0 a brand new motor from China here UK in a week. Now I have to change the gears ! I wonder if a cig lighter would easilly heat the gear - brass has a higher coefficient of expansion than the steel shaft. However I see on CZcams vides on how to make small pullers.

    • @GrandadIsAnOldMan
      @GrandadIsAnOldMan  Před 5 lety +1

      If you can get something behind the gear to support it then drifting it through would be a much better solution than smashing the motor like I did here. I have had success with smaller motors by cutting a slot the size of the shaft in a strip of steel and supporting that while I tap the shaft through. Using a cig lighter might work but I would expect the heat would be so gentle it would transfer through to the steel shaft before the brass gear had expanded enough to release. The obvious answer it try it, what have you got to lose. If it doesn't work you will have to go hotter faster.

      Not sure if you missed some words in your comment, I don't understand "how do you reckon you out the gear" and as for loctite, did I mention that? I would have to watch my 6 year old video again to find out. The gear is an interference fit, hence the need heat it to expand it, so it can be removed. You could use a proper gear puller as suggested in the video description. Fitting it on the shaft of a new motor would require force, ideally in a vise or press to ensure alignment.

      Putting it on 'should' be much easier. Warming it might be an idea but I would expect it go on cold by placing it on a flat surface and gently tapping the other end of the shaft. If your G-Clamp is sturdy enough that would work too and allow you to be gentle with it. I know the clamps I have would probably twist out of alignment. A nice big vise or vice (if you are in the UK) would also do the job nicely.

    Would this ruin my motor

    • @GrandadIsAnOldMan
      @GrandadIsAnOldMan  Před 6 lety

      Heating the gear to remove it is a common method but you need to be careful. You only want to heat the gear so it expands reducing it's grip on the shaft. If you allow the shaft to become hot then that expands too and that makes the grip tighter not looser. If you take too long the heat will travel up the shaft and may cause problems inside the motor.

    • @GrandadIsAnOldMan
      @GrandadIsAnOldMan  Před 6 lety

      You may have missed the point that this motor was already ruined so I am just taking the gear off so I can use it on another motor so I am not too worried about this motor. You really need to support the gear by sliding a strip of metal with a slot the width of the shaft between it and the motor. Then you support that strip of metal in a vice so no force is applied to the motor casing and bearing. Here is a video working on a much smaller motor but the principle is the same czcams.com/video/zgDD51pBAzs/video.html

      I found a use For my motor with the gear but here's a tip you can get motors of Aliexspress and Amazon you can get one 12v motor for around 5 - 13$ and a 24v for about 17 - 30$

      And most 12v or 24v motors have the same size shaft you just need to know what volt your motor is
