NYC used to have low rents like that all over downtown, my first 1 BR apartment was on 55 Ludlow street in 1971, south of Houston in the Lower East Side, it was 45 per month, building was built in 1860, crooked floors, 3rd floor walk up. Today it rents for $6000 per month. Same crooked floors, new appliances from Home Depot. Greedy landlords have Gentrified the entire city.

For me there would be nothing in New York to make me live in a pig stye like that. I would rather live with heat and hot water in a small town anywhere else.
