I picked up an early '87 G&L ASAT with the jumbo pickups. After nearly 30 years of playing, it blew my mind. I have more than 20+ guitars, and it is now my #1 guitar. I can't put it down. It is the telecaster perfected.
My American G&L ASAT Classic is the best feeling and best sounding guitar I’ve ever owned or played. Could not recommend the brand more highly.
Comanche is one of the most slept on guitars. No one wants to sound different.
Also wish they'd make the Rampage - and not be a Cantrell signature
isnt the rampage just a single pickup strat body with a kahler?@@guyincognito320
The captains playing has improved 1000%
The mystery of practicing, eh?
Cheers!!

You can only progress when you jam with pete!
That intro solo is tasty as hell. Good on you, Lee!
That Irish Ale one is a gem. But oh boy the jam at 17:05 is finger-licking tasty. I salute you guys
Lee is getting some serious chops now.
He's always been way better than what he shows in most of these videos.
He just needs to figure out where to go with chords he hasn’t become really used to, so that everything seriously comes together. He’s doing great though
Dang that last intro solo!!!!! Great work DP! One of the best tone I’ve ever heard!!
Jam at 17:08 was great guys. And the tones from those guitars are incredible for the price.
Awesome! Missed you guys! Great video!
Love me some Leo Fender guitars
Dude, I literally laughed so hard when he said swamp ass instead of swamp, ash!😂🤣
When y'all started playing together I wanted to add one to cart instantly! That was great!
I own a G&L tribute s-500 and love the MFD pickups. I will absolutely own an American made G&L at some point but I'm extremely impressed with the value of the Tribute series and how awesome the pickups sound, especially when you're not tied to tradition or nostalgia and just want the best sound quality for dollar you can get.
Yes you can buy the pickups separately. I've been considering some SC2 pickups for a long time, love them.
I have one with the humbucker in the neck and solid body and I love it. Can’t beat it for the money. As soon as I saw it hanging in the shop I had to have it!
I never want the ending jam to end! Very good guys, enjoy your demos and personalities keep up the good work!
Hah we need more videos of you two just playing! Love that tumnus btw, my favorite pedal the last few months!
I have the Irish Ale ASAT Special and it is a really good guitar, and the Sassafras wood is great visually and tonally. Note that all MFD pickups are the same as in the Made in the USA models (the humbuckers are standard import units though).
I've got a Blues Boy for years now and absolutely love it. great sounding and very inspiring. I've spend times looking for the right Tele for me till I put my eyes and hands on the ASAT - thiline, neck , humbucker, beautiful see through orange - I searched no longer, that was the one!
I genuinely enjoyed that opener so much. More!
Guys .. just love hearing you two jam together ...
I love, love, love my G&L guitars. I have the US Legacy Deluxe, US Will Ray Special (ASAY body with skull inlays, beefed up Comanche pickups and a B-Bender. I also have several of the Tribute series and they are fantastic guitars. I’ve never understood why they don’t get more attention. My only G&L I didn’t really bond with was the ASAT Deluxe. I wanted the 2 humbuckers but the pickups were just not that good, IMO. This had been 10 or more years so things may have changed with those pickups.
These guitars punch way above their weight class. I’ve had a 2003 Tribute Jr. (two P-90s (their 4285 & 4210), mahogany body), medium C 12” radius neck for awhile.
Good working stiff’s guitar. I swapped in a pair of Seymour Duncans, and put a custom Musikraft neck on it. Left the hardware & electronics alone.
I’d have liked to have seen the joy in Lee’s face had he put a P-90 through the Green Rhino I thought I spied on his pedal board.
that quick jam w/ the blues ones was just awesome !!!!!
Lee's playing is epic in this one :) well done!!!
You gentlemen are my morning news I love it!
In October 2021 got a G&L ASAT Classic Tribute semi-hollow almost like the one Lee was playing except that it has two MFD pickups. I totally love the tones and the 6.5 lbs.
I love the tone of both Sassafras teles especially the Classic! Just perfect! The Blues boys sounded good just a tad pillowy and big for my taste.
I have the Bluesboy (solid) and love it.
I bought the special one from ANDERTONS. It arrived today. The pickups are on a totally different level.
Love it. Although the action was high. But easily remedied. Definitely a great guitar.
The asat special I sold when I had to move, god I miss that guitar
Sassafras root was used to make root beer. The root and bark is super aromatic.
Isnt that forbidden now due to toxity?
I love the tone controls on my S-500, with a treble and bass control that affects all three pickups. I also love the dual-fulcrum tremolo. I decided that I wanted "Stratty" sounding pickups, though. So, I had Seymour Duncan SSL-2 and SSL-6 pickups installed. They sound fantastic, and they're designed for the 12 inch radius. Now my G&L S-500 Tribute is perfect!
The G&L pickups are underrated, and I think they are available separately. Leo developed that style bridge while at Music Man.
Pretty serious value for money and rosewood fret boards to very nice. ❤
Lately, I get a Tribute Comanche. It's unbelievable how GOOD it is !
Now I know, G&L is a wonder !!!
I have a 2000 American ASAT Classic semi-hollow (not a blues boy) and it is phenomenal!
If you listen to John Jorgenson when he was playing in the 'Desert Rose Band' and 'The Helelcasters' you will hear how great the 'G&L ASAT Special' sounds.
that blue one in the back is my favorite. got the red mahogany version they don't make anymore all upgraded. it's so nice. G&L is best kept secret
I am very fortunate to have a USA G&L S-500 in blueburst. It is such an incredible guitar and, frankly, a work of art
I picked up a mint asat deluxe in black for $350. Great guitar.
Lee seemed to be inspired by that Tele sound. Beautiful playing all around.
I have the solid body G&L Tribute with the Humbucker in the neck in Candy Apple Red. What a beautiful guitar it is to play. I like the sounds of the dark humbucker and the bright MFD bridge pickup.
The build quality is as good as a MIM Player in my opinion ( the fret ends are better, that’s for sure! )
G&L make stunning guitars. I even like the headstock.
Lees playing has def improved over the last year or so - good to see
I've played almost nothing but Fenders for almost 30 years. Strats will always be my favorite guitars but I got on the tele train only in the last 8 years or so. I was so close to buying a Fender Tele until I picked up a G&L and played it for the first time. I ended up getting a Semi-Hollow- Bluesboy and haven't looked back. The feel of it along with the balanced sound of the pickups is, in my opinion, one of the best sounding Telecaster-style models out there. I don't know that I will ever switch back.
I’ve tried several of the Tribute series and think that they are probably best value on the market right now for a T-type. The Blues Boy is my favorite
I have the Fullerton Deluxe Comanche and it's a spectacular instrument. I own other Strats and I love them all, but the Comanche is G&L's version of the Strat with three single coils, but each p/u is staggered. three poles under the high strings, three under the low ones. It changed the whole tonality. Not sure how or why they're staggered but it works. And the bridge is my fave of all guitars. The only bridge as good as that one is the Super Vee Bladerunner aftermarket bridge. If you haven't tried one, they're so awesome. But the G&L build quality and attention to the smallest detail is on par with PRS and miles beyond modern Fender.
That Bluesboy jam is epic🤟😎
I have 4 G&Ls ... they are, from far the best guitars for the value I have, and I have plenty of guitars ... from 150 euros (yes, some are good in that price range) to 3/4k (I have stopped buying guitars up to 1,5k euros ... it is no longer justified out of Luther guitars). The G&L Tribute series ... made in Indonesia but with US mics and mechanics ... and a luxury finish (roasted neck, locking tuners etc.) are just fantastic. The Strat Comanche is a killer but as well, the Fallout (what a versatile little and easy to play guitar !), the Asat Classic semi hollow ... in short, test one, you won't regret it and probably will buy others from that brand ...
Love G+L
I have the ASAT special with the humbuckers and I love it. I play it more than my G&L Commance which costs 4 times as much.
Nice jam
I got a G&L ASAT new in the mid 90's with the Multi Field Design (MFD) pickups in a custom transparent blue finish. Anyway it remains one of my favourite guitars after playing it for about 30 years. When both p'ups are on they act like a humbucker. Love the 7&1/2" fingerboard radius.(Newer ones are 9&1/2") I got my G&L before a Fender... and if I had to sell one, without a doubt the Fender would go! Actually, I'm thinking about losing my Fender and getting an ASAT Bluesboy.
Love my ASAT Special with the Jumbo MFD's (same Irish Ale finish as shown here). Looks fantastic and sounds amazing. It's like a Tele on steroids. Those pickups are just fatter in every way, whether clean and glassy or driven and dirty. They really come alive with a little gain. You can literally play anything from jazz to metal with it.
I think a few years ago people still had issues with the headstock and couldn't get past what they had seen on stages over 50 years of music but now with a lot of well known players out there playing boutique guitars whether by endorsement or just plain choice, made by smaller companies that incorporate lots of variations of the classic S and T style in headstock shape, these designs by Leo may just get the recognition they deserve.
Great playing gentlemen
I’ve owned 3 G&L US models. My favorite was the S-500 but the downside is they don’t resell very well. Most people aren’t familiar with the brand so you’re kind of stuck with them. I ended up trading a couple to a music store for less.
Can we talk about the Captain’s solo!? The feel, the time, the licks! Crazy seeing his growth as a player lately
I have a Fullerton-made ASAT Bluesboy, and I can't put it down. They do an amazing job (on the American range, anyway), and I prefer it to my American Standard Tele. That bridge does have a bit of a different sound, though.. so it's might not be the perfect replacement sound wise. Still one of my favorite guitars, though.
I always wanted a G&L Classic (not the US version) until I tried one. Nothing special really, so I spent less than half and got a Harley Benton 25th anniversary Tele, which is easily just as good.
Now the ASAT Special.....that IS something special! As is a Commanche, with those Z pickups.
These are cool, but when are we going to get some new Doheny tribute colours? Can't get any for love nor money in the UK at the minute!
Also sassafras is the wood that Eric Johnson's strat "Virginia" is made of, for what it's worth.
Also ALSO, the ASAT Classic pickups are taller than regular tele pickups so they might not fit in a Fender!
The Blues Boy versions are preety cool.
Those G&L guitars have always been very nice and just unique enough.
I checked out a Tribute Blue Boy semi-hollow a few years ago and was a bit dissappointed with the finish goop left in the f-hole. They're gorgeous, though. Must revisit!
The sheer choice of guitars available right now for less than £1k is incredible. I can't really justify buying yet another guitar of course, but a thinline Tele would be handy, and these G&L models do look very good. Where are they made?
I don't know why leo didn't change the control layout so volume is closest to you, then tone, then the pickup selector. Like on a strat kind of. Makes for easier volume swells. I just flip mine but would have been great if some came like that stock
I love the yellow Fender
Love those guitars! Think you guys should invest in a string gauge in the studio now 😂
Yes you can buy ASAT pickups separately, I put them in my MIM Nashville Power Tele.
I have a G&L Tribute series ASAT Deluxe. I think it's fantastic. Would like a G&L Tribute series ASAT Special but am gunning for a G&L Fullerton Deluxe Comanche.
Great value Classic designed by the king that won't let you down
These pickups sound amazing for the price point!
Hi, I'm looking for a Telecaster guitar and I'm following you.
First guitar
Which of these do you suggest?
Squier Telecaster Classic Vibe 50
G&L Asat Classic or G&L Asat Special?
Thank you
8:10 it just doesn't quite sound like a tele...very balanced tones...To me, there's no shrill tele cry when pushing higher range. Maybe that is what you were trying to say??? There is a calmness with these PUs that makes playing them probably very enjoyable. With no shrill tele cry to roll off, there is a stated clarity even with a lil volume pushing the cabinet! Very nice demo! Pete, you pronounce English words quite well.
It's only the blues!
Scott
Pete you are absolutely amazing!!!!!!
That Blues Boy is you!!!!
I love the head stock!!!
Bought a tribute bluesboy a couple of years ago on impulse. The fret work was awful and stock bridge pickup really not to my taste, but a change of pickups to something more traditional and a fret level later and it plays just as well as a 1k+ guitar, it's one of my favourites in my collection, great guitar now.
I’m a G&L person. Just prefer them-basses and guitars. One day I really want a USA Z-3.
Never tried a G&L. Haven't seen many lefthand models, although i understand they do, do them. My 1974 Strat cost me 1200 quid. It plays beautifuly. Although 70's Fender's (post CBS) are inferior quality, according to people with far more knowledge than I, still, it's a hefty price tag for something that is 'Bad quality'. Obviously they are not all bad. The Bullet Truss rod looks very cool and is instantly recognizable. The tilt mechanism and 3 bolt Neck were radical at the time, and as we know lots of us Guitarist's live our lives in the past. There is no need for it, buy a G&L. Fender's with all the little problems ironed out. Although i expect there are a myriad of know all's and Troll's ready to shoot me down.
Have one. Love it.
What a fabulous intro.
One of my biggest regrets was trading my Fullerton Deluxe ASAT classic in turquoise and rosewood board. Traded for a Silverface Super Reverb (that I no longer have)
What is great with these pickups is you can raise or lower each individual pole piece to dial in your own tone, which you can’t do with the Fenders.
Tasty licks, Mr Pete!
I love my ASAT Special. Even for jazz - my baby can handle every genre, from mellow to roaring.
The one thing I don't like about my ASAT Classic is the tint on the neck- they were going for a "vintage look", but it's way too yellow, needs a bit more brown in it. Looks sort of fake/cartoony beside my old Strat that has a naturally aged neck from time and playing over 40 years. Great guitar though, awesome value. Needed a bit of a fret dress, fretwork wasn't perfect from the factory.
Custom ordered a G&L Blues Boy from Rudy’s NYC when he was still on 48th Street - great guitar; a little heavy. 7/8th body no ?
Lee always has a nice watch on, go on Lee show us your collection!
my G&L ASAT tribute (an '04 i think) is my main gig guitar. I have far more expensive guitars that just stay in the case, including '80 a LP Custom.
Lovely guitars, not a fan of humbuckers on a T style - look or sound, but the single coil versions sound awesome
that red tele is so sweet ❤
Eric Johnson’s 1954 Fender Stratocaster (the “Virginia” model) has a sassafras wood body.
Nice to see that the "Captain has improved his licks" (Almost)
Hmmm.. I have the G&L Tribute ASAT Special in Irish Ale, there's no belly cut on mine, sure you have the right 'far eastern' model?
Mine also has a tortoiseshell pickguard, not black and the body is Poplar, not Sassafras. Looking at the G&L website's 'ASAT Tribute Special' page, your model doesn't match the specs for the G&L Tribute ASAT Special. 🤨
HaHa Innard Skynyrd, that was hilarious Pete! Thanks for the laughs guys, great jamming too! Also I just noticed that Lee makes a SlingBlade "french fried tators" face sometimes while soloing! no offense!
After Strat After Tele. George & Leo. Consistent shoot out winner.
I will never sell or trade my a.s.a.t. Tribute Play all my country & blues shows with it. It’s got Mojo. ❤
Im left handed and have two G&L Tributes, a legacy (2009) and a bluesboy (2021).
Both were poorly put together and needed considerable work to sort.
So the Indonesian QC aint the best.
Great sounding guitars. Big fan of the PTB circuit on the Legacy and S500.
Necks are 22 fret full heel, no overhang.
The pickups on both of my guitars are fab - even when Legacy ones were installed back to front!
Love G&L guitars. The fortunate/unfortunate thing is I live in Australia. Sometimes I think I live in a third world country when it comes music equipment and instruments because of their availability. But then go "definitely not third world with the the prices we have to pay here for equipment and instruments". The G&L tributes are not out of my price range but barely have any representation here. I want a Comanche. They are over 1k here for the tribute and very limited amounts. Maybe one day I will just bite the bullet and get one from Andertons. When you take the VAT off and your shipping is quite cheap now it works out cheaper sometimes. While we dont have a free trade agreement with the UK since brexit.
It's always interesting seeing the price depending on where you live. In NZ Tributes are actually cheaper than CV Squiers. 🤔
Hi mate, I live up in far north QLD and own a USA Legacy (spec'd myself) I ordered through Jacks Music in Sydney back in 2016. Not sure if they are still doing that, but they were excellent to deal with to get things underway. Even got pics from the factory of the different quilted maple tops that I got to choose from.
It's the most versatile and incredible guitar. I guess this is only helpful if you go the whole hog for a USA model.
All the best man
Those Teles sound fantastic!
holy that red one sounds goood
15:57 hahaha pete playing a wonky bluesy Top Gun theme lol
