The Beatles did simple catchy songs that were good written and favourite of millions. And that's art. Do you want complicated harmonies, tunes, drums? OK go to Rubber Soul and beyond. You'll find masterpieces.

In 1962, the Beatles represented a radical change - both in song and dress. Songs were very short to ensure AM radio play - album rock didn’t get air play until the late 60s when FM became an option

Fun fact: Paul McCartney began writing “Love Me Do” when he was playing hooky from school at age 16.

The amazing thing about the early Beatles was... just one great song after another, after another, after another. Before the Beatles, people used to buy 45's - for that One good song that a band produced. After the Beatles, they bought 33 LP's, and expected there to be MANY good songs; the Beatles set the bar higher for everyone.

What's best about even these simple, earlier songs is the vocal harmonies! About the same time as Love Me Do is another simple song with great harmonies. Called Baby's In Black. I think you'll really appreciate it too!😊👍 Thanks from Las Vegas! ❤

This is one of the Beatles very early songs from 1962. Interesting note: This song was composed by Lennon-McCartney in 1958 although it wasn’t recorded by the group for another four years. Also "Love Me Do" was recorded by the Beatles on three occasions with three different drummers.

This was in fact, their first commercial release as The Beatles. Don't forget the B side, "P.S. I Love You", which features a latin beat with Ringo playing maracas. This first single is also featured on their debut album, to follow, "Please Please Me", released in April of 1963.

    Good reaction, Michael. 🙂
This was actually the Beatles' very first single, released in the UK only. It came out in October 1962, and it charted, but not all that high. They followed it up with "Please, Please Me," which soared to No. 1 in the UK. Give it a listen. It really represented a quantum leap from this first song.
Americans were still a year away from discovering them, with the release of "I Want to Hold Your Hand" and "She Loves You." Both hit No. 1 in the U.S. in late 1963. And from there, there was no turning back. They were gods.

Just a reminder:3 years later, they came our with Rubber Soul(a wonderful collection of songs)then in '67,what is considered their masterpiece- Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band. So it didn't take long for them to show how groundbreaking they were.

This was the first record they recorded - and Ringo had been with the group for just a couple weeks when they had that first recording session on September 11th, 1962. The song got to #17 on the UK charts... which was very good for their very first single. Their next one ("Please Please Me") went to #1... and they were off to the races (#1 after #1 after #1...).

    Michael, awaiting next Bestles vid!
You put out great stuff! 👍😎

  • @bookcraver1
    @bookcraver1 Před rokem +4

Good reaction. Yes, their early stuff was VERY basic but there are two things to keep in mind. They were TEENAGERS when they wrote this AND almost no one was writing their own songs back then. This truly was a new, fresh sound and yeah, we all went nuts. I'm really glad you decided to go back to the beginning to listen the way we did. Be sure to include the singles that came out at the time of the albums. It was a rare thing for one of their singles to be on an album. In eight years, they had 27 #1 songs between UK and USA. Can you imagine how many more there would have been if all their songs had been played on the radio? "In My Life", "Norwegian Wood", "Day in the Life" "Here, There, and Everywhere" "Baby, You Can Drive My Car" are just a very few that you only heard if you bought the album. Mainstream AM radio only played single releases; album songs didn't happen until FM radio became popular in the late 60's/early 70's.

Bob Dylan and John Lennon brought the harmonica front and center in pop music in the early 60s. However, the masters of the harmonica were the Harmonica Rascals of the 1950s, featuring Johnny Puleo. They combined great harmonies, pantomime, and slapstick comedy on various TV variety shows of the period. Type in "Johnny Puleo" in the CZcams search for a real treat.

I love the early Beatles. The music after drug abuse waned in my taste. One of my early favorites was And I Love Her, a beautiful ballad, and a later hit I Want You (She's so heavy). Great reaction, I'm always up for the Beatles. :)

Today, 6/18/23, is Paul's 81st birthday, so HAPPY BIRTHDAY to him!!!! As for this video, when you said "they look so young," they were all in their very early 20s then. Even when The Beatles disbanded & broke hearts all around the world--late '69/early '70--none of them had yet turned 30!!
The Beatles will always be the greatest musical group ever!!! By way of writing great songs, displaying incredible harmonies & vocals, & making many sensational, & very diverse records, they altered the course of popular music!!! They changed the world, too!!!!! Best of all, each one of them can be described as a very good man, with a good heart & a kind & loving soul. Who could ask for anything more? ❤🥰❤

Good point Mike, a simple song which I love to catch peoples attention. Never a huge fan of theirs but dug many of their songs. I dug other groups from the British Invasion. Animals. Who, Dave Clark Five. Female vocalists Dusty Springfield and Petula Clark. Definitely the 60s is my favorite decade for music.

  • @terri2494
    @terri2494 Před rokem +2

This reaction made me think of two singers who play a mean harmonica. The first is Billy Joel. I thought you had reacted to him but I didn’t find any videos showing that. Unless you had some videos that were taken down I strongly suggest you look into his vast catalog of incredible music. I would suggest starting with Piano Man, which is a great introduction and the first song of his that most of my generation heard. And yes, he plays harmonica and piano at the same time, as well as singing (when he’s not playing harmonica, of course).
The other one is John Popper, who is the lead singer of Blues Traveler. I would recommend starting with Run Around. You should know that MTV didn’t want to play their videos because Popper was heavyset and that didn’t fit with the image they wanted to portray. The band made a video that pretty much mocked MTV’s rejection and it became a monster big hit. (It also helps if you’re familiar with The Wizard of Oz, which I realize isn’t true of everyone in your generation. My generation grew up watching it when it aired once a year.)

Release date 1962, during their first year in a recording studio.
The live concert footage is from the first concert played in the US, in February 1964. They played Washington, DC just before their national debut on the Ed Sullivan Show. They looked young because John and Ringo were only 23, Paul was 21, and George was 20.
As far as their songwriting ability, keep in mind Paul and John had been writing songs for about 6 or 7 years. Likely the early ones were terrible, but after 6 or 7 years you improve.
The real contributions of the Beatles at this time were:
    -The creation/promotion of Pop Music
-The British Invasion, that flooded American music with British bands
-The hair length; seriously, this was when men started wearing their hair longer than the buzzcuts and short styles.
-The stadium venue; prior to the Beatles, concerts were held inside in various venues, from clubs to armories, to sports arenas, to concert halls. The Beatles led to the necessity of stadiums, with attendance in the tens of thousands. (It grew after that, but this is how it started).

This was their first British Single officially, and went to #17. after that producer George Martin and EMI took them more seriously...like "Not bad fellas, let's do another one..." The USA public did not hear this 1962 song really until February 1964 when they came across the pond.

Hey Michael, I really enjoy your reaction videos. I am a longtime Beatles fan since day 1 of their arrival in the U.S. (I'm 70)
You might also enjoy Donovan. Especially 'Hurdy Gurdy' man. It is a song about everyone's disillusionment with the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi
at his Ashram in India. Everyone meaning Donovan, The Beatles, Mia Farrow, The Beach Boys etc. and all who attended his lectures about
transcendental meditation. The Maharishi was all about being a celebrity and money. So much for the holy man.
Of course, Donovan also has many more songs to enjoy. John Lennon wrote 'Sexy Sadi' after The Beatles famous falling out with the Maharishi.
George Harrison discovered the sitar while in India and played it in several songs like ' Norwegian Wood ' & ' Within You Without You '
& 'Inner Light' & 'Tomorrow Never Knows'. I would like to see your reactions on some on these songs too. There will never be a musical
force like The Beatles in our lifetime again. They were magical and incomparable!

Can you imagine what it was like? The music and sounds are all ‘natural. They had to play and sing everything, record it in real time, no edits or corrections. And yes, it was simple sounding (we think now, but ask mu mum…it was amazingly complex). It was 100% ‘human sound’. It was the first time anything sounded remotely like this. Without this and the rest of The Beatles music, we would not have today’s music. And honestly, just imagine what they could have done with today’s technology!!! I feel today’s music try’s to sound all ‘the same’ and ‘generic’…..which makes no sense! Everything up til mid 2010’s tried to be original and different! Maybe it is because they all use the same technology and are really ‘cheating’……who knows, but I prefer when I hear a new song Ito instantly know who it is from, because everyone is so original and different sounding it is unmistakable who you must be listening to!
