  • Just got the latest Garmin Montana 700 GPS handheld device today and wanted to open it the package and to let you guys see my reaction as I take it out of the box and play around with it. The last time I did content on a Garmin Montana, it was the 600 series nine years ago!
    This is mainly designed for bikes, ATV's and Side by Side off-road vehicles. (look below about maps)
    I got the Garmin Montana 700, there is the 700i which is the exact same unit, except that you have integrated inReach functionality as opposed to being a dedicated GPS device.
    The box contains the following:
    - montana 700
    - micro ISB cable
    - battery
    - manual
    First off, this device starts up FAST. By far the fastest Garmin I've had my hands on. Second is the HUGE 5" diagonal touchscreen. Very responsive, and supposedly glove friendly.
    Overall the UI is very familiar to Garmin devices, and if you are used to working with an eTrex, GPSMAP device, then you will be very comfortable with this one.
    WIFI, Bluetooth and ANT+
    Garmin Topo active maps preloaded and if you are in the US you will have additional map layers to play around with such as public land, etc...
    *NOTE* The pre-loaded maps will only do off-road navigation, meaning that you need another mapping product to do highway driving.
    ConnectIQ support which means that you can download widgets, app and other goodies via Garmin Connect.
    Pairing with your smartphone and Garmin Connect will open up the connectivity features like Active Weather and notifications.
    Birdseye maps can be downloaded directly to the device (16GB internal memory) along with the SD card slot means that you can hold a lot of your map content. Waypoint, routes, tracks specs are on par with other devices.
    18 hours of battery life and there are new set of mounts you'll need to get to mount it on your bike or truck.

      That is nice country for sure and the GPS should work just slick. I only got to start exploring Canmore when I was traveling for work and needed to stay over the weekend when things were "normal"

    Thanks for the excellent video. I have been scouring the internet since early August for any updates on this interesting addition to the Montana lineup. I think that you are the first CZcams channel to do a real unboxing and user review. I am very interested in this model as I have been using the Garmin Montana 680t for years now and love it. I hike and geocache a lot and the Montana has proven itself time and time again as being very reliable, durable and stable in the field. The size of this newer model and the lack of carabiner attachment or belt clip-style attachment is a bit concerning though as I am not sure how to integrate it into my geocaching and hiking setup. You can fit a lanyard but I am not a fan of them for big, heavy GPSs. I know that Garmin are releasing a few accessories including a AA battery container for this new model. I am really looking forward to you posting your experiences with this interesting new addition to the Montana family. IF I do buy this GPS, I will also buy this particular model (Montana 700) as I already have an Inreach device. I do not need a GPS-based camera as I use my Iphone to take photos and have noticed that only the Montana 700 can pickup the GLONASS network. I read somewhere that in order for the 700i and 750i models to connect to the Iridium satellite network, Garmin removed the GLONASS network. It is not a big deal but I like the capability of being able to switch GPS satellite networks. Thanks once again for the awesome video. Best of luck with your new Montana!

      Great post! I have not read much about this unit other than Garmin's trend to add inReach in their handhelds. I also echo your concerns about attachments for hiking as it's heavy for lanyard and no real clip for hiking. I fear that their solution will be a bulky clip that goes around your backpack shoulder strap.
      Looking at the satellite page, it shows GPS; GPS +GLONASS; GPS+ GALILEO

    The metal bracket/sleeve the sad card fits into popped off, how do I get it back on or do I have to have it professionally put back on?

    Nice overview Jim. I like the size and user interface. And thank goodness for user replaceable battery pack (cell phone makers take note). Unit looks quite rugged. Nothing earth shattering in features compared to previous Garmin OS and environment. Hence I think their pricing on this series is a little over the top.

    • @AvoidingChores
      @AvoidingChores  Před 3 lety +1

      The pricing on this is way too much for the same features as the GPSMAP 66 (and even that one is 100-200$ more than it should). I’m not sure if they are trying to mimic what they are doing with their smart watches by creating a “luxury” lineup. I don’t know if you can really do that for the handhelds. I could see why the overlander is going for that lifestyle but the Montana looks like specific for people on their ATV/ side by side going to their hunting camp or other type work.

      Every GPS unit on the market allows you to simply go into a store, buy a pair of AA batteries, and you're good to go. But not this unit, requires you to buy another battery pack at $30 on top of the $500+ this unit cost, just for the ABILITY to use AA batteries. That's nuts. Any cellphone has far more features than this GPS unit. I think Garmin should have pushed more into the Monterra line of GPS units (based on Android so that GPSr unit will run all kinds of Android apps).

  • @dvdrnldprsn
    @dvdrnldprsn Před 6 měsíci

    More of a question really. Does anyone know what the seven (7) gold contact points are on the left side of the unit do? I have looked around for any kind of an answer but have not found anything specifically referring to these. Any ideas out there?

    • @AvoidingChores
      @AvoidingChores  Před 6 měsíci

      that should be a power connector (i think) , but you are right I don't run into the actual accessory that would go in.

    Thanks for the review, can you tell me if the unit can count to the 650t veh powered mount or do you need to buy a new one for this unit?

    Hi Jim. Just wondering what your thoughts are on this unit after having it for a couple of years? Any major issues?

    • @AvoidingChores
      @AvoidingChores  Před rokem

      I find it more better suited for motorized riding, no major issues with it other than the high cost of getting powered mounts or extra battery.

    Hiya, For someone who does mostly hiking, would you say Montana 700 is too bulky or too heavy to consider? 700 seems to offer far better readability over Etrex or Oregon but what worries me is that the unit might not be exactly practical. Cheers

    No USB-C? For the price and the tech it should support fast USB-C charging

    Hello Jim, in position, why does GARMIN not use the decimal system?
    Example: 48.8610 2.2908 (48 ° 51'39.6 "N 2 ° 17'26.9" E)
    Decimal degrees (DD).
    I use this decimal system because it is more precise.

    • @AvoidingChores

    Hello Mr Cyr, just looked at this awesome GPS, is this the model where you can make routes with an app? so getting a Tablet or Chromebook will provide an app where you can make routes and also download and upload tracks?
    happy weekend and thanks

    • @AvoidingChores
      @AvoidingChores  Před 3 lety

      The answer is “yes” but there are a few options. You can still use the garmin explore/Inreach portal to sync items from desktop to device. There is also manually transferring files to SD card. It all depends on your workflow

      Good stuff Dave! I've been a bit quite with the Montana last couple of months but I've been eyeing a case and got the bike mount ready to go. I've also added some custom OSM maps so that it can be more useful for highway routing.
