I really like your focus on budget, as that's currently my biggest concern. All the increased prices are quite alarming. You've share lots of good tips and deals here so in exchange I will share something from my own research - Wickes sell the cheapest water butts and they include stands in the price. They also sell good value stands if you have old barrels or water butts without a stand. B and Q and Homebase were much more expensive. Also look out for Aldi and Lidl gardening deals, I get most of my gardening things from there and it starts around about now/over the next few weeks. They have a magazine each week letting you know what deals are coming up and they're much cheaper than garden centres and other supermarkets.

I've just bought a load of garden stuff from poundshop online. Asparagus and rhubarb crowns for £1each,tools, pots, seeds, hanging baskets etc all excellent value and good quality. Highly recommend for gardening on a budget.

Another great thing from Poundland are the grow bags.
They're plastic, and you do need to cut some holes in the bottom for drainage.
But, they're big, and cheap.

I really enjoyed this video with the tips on bargains. As you say, if you don't watch the pennies, gardening can become expensive. Poundland sounds great. Shame I don't live in UK 😪

Thanks for sharing where you got everything! I've been wondering for a while now, especially about those grey planters. I'll need to make a trip to poundland to see what they have in the coming weeks.
Last year I bought some £1.50 14l buckets from screwfix (B&Q had 13l orange buckets for £1) and drilled holes in the bottom of them. They were great for growing tomatoes in! The handles made them portable, but I could also tie string to them which anhored the bottom of a support for the tomatoes. Maybe not pretty, but very cheap big pots.

Great video , last year I left a kale plant to go to seed and this year I have thousands of free kale seeds, savings seeds is a way to make an saving each year. The new kale plants germinated really fast
Very true JonPaul and seed saving is something we will be doing this year too as every year the belt gets tighter (Not from drinking lol)

I saw a good video where someone grew veg out of an old children's swimming pool. One of those plastic shell things. Why not? Who knows what a neighbour might throw out because its cracked or something that couldn't be used? I would just say check the bottom for the triangle thing that tells you the kind of plastic its made from first, there are codes online to tell you what the number inside the arrow triangle thing is to say if its safe. Suffice it to say, with small children, that plastic is very likely just fine.

But yes use anything suitable to grow especially if it is free

great video another good option for small pots are pot noodle pots if you eat them I've got loads and there really strong I use the cheap cat litter trays for my water trays

I have a polytonal first year. Just to see how good or bad it is coping with the weather at the moment and it is doing the job of a greenhouse I’m a great believer in glass greenhouse in past years. Because of the cost of living I have like every one else that has retired and pension I’ve had to think about growing vegetables again. As well as going to a market and buying cheap meat it is really working out for us so far

Polytonal is 2 by 4 meters and costs £88 pounds it’s easy to make and dismantle for movement it is very simple to use it’s a good start for those that are new to gardening I would recommend it to someone who is on a budget like young family’s
Hi, Ivan. Love watching the videos, I thought I'd leave a comment to tell you about the local green waste center in Sheffield that does cheap compost, The price for a 1-meter metric cube is £30 equivalent to a tun, or you can bag your own for £3. You have to have a way to get it home so a van or a trailer, but it is well worth saving a few £££. I have found it to be very good quality compared to Poundland's compost. I don't work for them by the way, I just thought since you mentioned how much you were spending on compost, it might save you and other people some money. cheers again.

Hello Ivan - I've just started watching both your gardening and cooking channels and am working my way from the last 1-2 years to date. They are great and I am really enjoying both channels. However, at first i thought it was me, but I've noticed on both channels that they seem to be back to front or mirror images, when anything is written, I have to read it backwards and even your clock and the writing on your your t-shirts, are back to front, why is this? as it can make reading your labels/seed packets, quite difficult. Anyway, keep up the good work and I look forward to watching more videos.

You are right everything written comes out backwards i have my phone on a tripod for filming and need to see the screen so i know im in shot so thats why

@@ivans-gardening-allotment-uk lol - you need to find a spotty, 15yo computer whizz kid, they'll soon sort it. Can I ask whereabouts in Derbyshire you are? I've just moved from Derbyshire to Lincolnshire, so this will be my first season growing in my new garden. I started container gardening during the first lockdown, when I was furloughed and loved it so much I kept going. Now I am retired and moved, I have 7 raised beds (one I am saving to use as an Asparagus bed). I'll have to look to see if you have a video on asparagus?
As always Ivan, another great video very helpful and informative. (Thanks for mentioning me Lidl, Asda, Morrisons and Aldi) are the places to get the free buckets, just ask one of the assistants. Thanks for sharing.
Sadly, when I enquired at my then local Morrisons, they had either thrown them in the skip or were charging £1/bucket!!

Hi Ivan, great video :) when you build the plant pots out of pellets do you need to treat them with anything in order for them to avoid getting damp and ruined?
I could stain them to preserve a bit longer but just never bothered

Great video Ivan , i think we are thinking about cost effectiveness at the moment . I built up a couple of pallet beds this week using B and Q stackable raised beds twice , £20 each, as it was onto a cement surface. I infilled a lot of it using stuff in my garden waste bin and cuttings from bushes so I didn’t need much bought top soil and compost😊. I’d recommend this as a cost effective way to start raised beds, Donald, Edinburgh

What measurement do you use for feed and pesticide?
Hi Paulline i measure tomato feed as per the instructions
When i make Pesticide i use 1 teaspoon on washing up liquid to 1 litre of water same with white vinegar
