- Once I was back in Charlotte from the Yough I had barely a half hour before I started getting messages that rain was hitting hard all over. So I got right back in the truck and made the rally. Luckily I was able to meet up with the long creek boys and I got to check out the Chauga, and high water Chatooga. The Chauga was great, but then the Chatooga was so different than what I expected, and so glorious. Can’t wait to make the rally up there again.
First time I ran that at 5’ was with Chris Spelius, Becky Weiss and Greystoke. back in about 1989. Stout run. Very fun.
Then in 1990 I got to run it at 8’ with Russ Kullmar. That was pretty rock and roll 🙂
In 1991 again at 5’ with eric Jackson and Scott Shipley. We were in a slalom training camp, the river came up and we bailed on training and went boating

You should see it with more water! Above 8' it really starts to change and above 10' it's off the rails. The biggest wave in the SE is Bull sluice at those levels. I've run Sandy Ford through Woodall in an hour. Don't underestimate section III either at that level as Dick's Creek, Sandy Ford, and the narrows are as big/bigger than section IV! Screaming left turn is also nuts. I almost drown at Dick's Creek back in 2004 at 11ft+.
This was THE week. Highest levels I've known about in a few decades. Two epic storms. Also hit the Ocoee that week with your dad at some nutty level causing us to have to roll to go under the bridge at Hell hole. About half of our group walked off above Table Saw. Sickness.

@@danejacksonkayak Certainly worth the trip if it ever gets up there again. Just note that Sandy Ford looks like the Susitna with it's huge holes and standing waves. Narrows is just as scary. Dick's creek has almost drown 2 pro level boaters over the years with both resulting in terrifying swims. My boat was found 2 miles above bull sluice a week after the water dropped. Easy to skirt the hole if you know it's there! Otherwise it's about 100' wide so not so much...

Just got to the Chattooga Bull Sluice part of the video, 2 years ago last Memorial Day it was like that. I think it might have been at 6 ft. I had never seen it so big. We rafted down the left side at Bull Sluice which I had never seen enough water going over that side, you always had to go through the right on Bull Sluice. Man, I would have loved to have been out there shooting aerial video of you guys with my Mavics.

@@danejacksonkayak I got time, I go in for rotator cuff repair surgery tomorrow. Can't wait to be back out and doing things again. Kind of bummed as it is ruining tons of plans. I think I overdosed on your videos last night. Loved watching the places I know of and seeing ones so close by that I didn't know of but I realized that I think more of the commercial rafting rivers and not places kayakers go. I've driven along the scenic highway by the Cullasaja and always thought it would be cool to kayak. Some background- I learned and started paddling on small lakes and streams in Illinois in '86 on a borrowed fiberglass kayak and a year later got one of (I think) the earliest rotomolded kayaks from some place called Whites Kayaks in upstate NY. A buddy of mine still has that kayak. For history's sake, I sometimes think I want it back- I gave it to one friend who later gave it to that guy. Sorry for the long rant and thanks for the entertainment and inspiration.

Up until I rafted the Gauley, the Chattooga 4 was the best I had ever done. Love it up there in Long Creek. I drive up just to swim, free dive and treasure hunt around Bull Sluice. Found some kayaker's debit card on the bottom!

@@danejacksonkayak Surprisingly (and happily), at least the Bull Sluice area is pretty clean. I don't know if locals go out and find the good stuff before I get there since I live 100 miles away toward Atlanta. It is still fun to take a mini scuba system and just sit on the bottom or bring my small underwater metal detector.

But I did have to get out after Salto Maule in Chile cause my skirt blew, this February.

In the south east you can kayak all winter, in fact that is mainly when all the creeks come in.
Yeah like he said, Southeast is great cause you can kayak basically year round.

What are your best tips to kickflip?
As far as I can tell he from watching some of his vid he is using different kayaks for different rivers. Am I wrong or is there a methodology behind it? If so, what determines the shape of the kayak to use?
I have really enjoyed watching you run rivers, that is until you got your Antix.

I do love all your acrobatics, just can't watch them from the top of your head. Makes me dizzy and nauseas.
Yet, you are addicting and I will continue watching you run whitewater, then look away when you pirouette.
I apologize for the dizziness. My goal is just to show anyone that is planning on hitting these runs where, and how many cool moves there are especially with the half slice boats. Some runs have almost no squirts and some have hundreds of them. The next few weeks of videos will have less as they weren’t runs like the gauley and Yough that have so many squirts.
@@danejacksonkayak I so understand. Thanks for the reply. I only wish GoPro had a steady helmet cam similar to what some pilots use on CZcams, to reduce the quick motion. No worries! I will still be glued to your videos as long as my head lets me ;-) I only wish I could paddle with you. Unfortunately bad wrists have reduced my ability to enjoy challenging white water.

what was wrong or so dangerous about that one I guess you call it a hole ? that you had to get out and walk it around it and then it looked at them just to me BTW I don't Whitewater kayak
At those high levels those kinds of features are tough to make it over, and if you were to get stuck there’s a good chance you may need to exit your kayak. The more playful kayaks we had would have also made it harder to get over the feature. The biggest issue though was that we were already running out of daylight so if something were to go wrong that wouldn’t have been good.

Just like in golf, never let someone else choose the right club for your next shot, you shouldn’t let someone else scout your line for you.
@@canopybreezesoutdoors4916 guessing that you don"t do much creek boating. No need for everyone to get out of their boats if you boat with people you trust, the person looking (scouting) will know if the rest of the group really need to see something.

Like mentioned above. If you trust someone to give good beta after scouting. As well as trust that everyone in the group doesn’t always need to scout. Sometimes it makes more sense to have just one person get out and let the group know what it is. Although I was the only one who hadn’t run the section, the reason for needing to get out was just to see if there was wood in the rapid. Which we often need to do after big rains.
@@danejacksonkayak yeah im use to the big rains down here and scouting it for wood but everytime i let someone scout for me i usually end up not where i need to be but i jus feel safer when more than one person see what to do.
