And the movie is "soft". The actual Hypatia was flayed alive with ceramic jar fragments, was then dismembered, and they paraded her body parts across the streets as trophies. During the same days of unrest, Cyrill of Alexandria ordered a bunch of people to bury the tomb of Alexander the Great under soil, out or spite and envy, because he couldn't deal with a pagan king getting more praise than their Jesus.

The scene that disturbed me the most
After the Christians pelted the statue of Zeus, the Pagans decided to retaliate but a huge mob of fanatical Christians forced them to seek safety behind the walls of their temple
Only then did one of them realise "Since when were Christians so numerous"?
Like a British historian commenting the destruction of Hampi said "Civilisation is a very fragile thing"
When one realises it's going to crumble, it's already too late

While I have always appreciated this spectacular production, one should heed its precious, underlying theme, whereby blind faith in ANY mythological creed - regardless of its mono- or polytheistic basis - represents nothing short of dangerous, murder-inspiring concepts, for the sake of one's deity/deities alleged greatness.
In this movie, early Christians were slaughtered by pagans in Alexandria (as they were sacrificed earlier in Rome), whereas, a few centuries later, horrific deeds were committed by the same Christians, either on account of the Inquisition in Spain/Portugal/Rome or during the unforgivable massacres perpetrated in central Europe during the Thirty Years War (1618-1638), when hordes of blood-thirsty Catholic and Protestant devotees mercilessly butchered one-another.

You fail to understand the movie. It teaches that ignorance and mob mentality can bring a good ideology into delusions. Its a movie about the ignorant mob vs the intelligent few.
Also this is nothing compared to the 600s when the muslims invaded Egypt, I guess political correctness only allows to portray only Christianity in critical light. Another difference compared to the muslim one is that that was a ruling foreign barbarian conquering and destroying Egypt - whilst the Christian one was the people rising up from the bottom up to ‘combat’ the traditional aristocrats.
Its similar to the French revolution, and the French destroyed so much Bourbon heritage, art, and other cultural things too in the process.
Also, what does Christianity teach? Be ignorant? Quite the opposite. It teaches the people to sought after the truth. The ignorant angry mob is the one that is hypocritically being less Christian.

This movie doesn't discuss religion in particular, but may be in general. Still, the movie is about a wise form of sceptic approach to any certainty in terms of rational interrogation which characterized the tradition of acient Greek philosophy, beginning with natural philosophers and afterwards inherited by other philosophers, including Socrates, his pupil Plato and neoplatonists like Hypatia. Well not that all neoplatonists are sceptical; contrary they may be quite dogmatic which is uncompromisingly problematic for a philosophizing classical mind such that of Hypatia.

The Savagery of the British war crimes is hideous and the UK military is still occupying Cyprus, Greece. So for me, it's disturbing and anger's me to see British characters portraying my Greek ancestors, without even having any Hellenistic characteristics whatever, really sickens me to my core. I know that these British actress's & actor's and other British people had nothing to do with the war, but there is still some semblance of hate within me towards them. There is an intelligent Movie to be made in English about Hypatia and the Alexandria culture, and Agora - (2009) this isn't it, indeed.
In Rome the Greek doctors were the best. University and library had writers from doctors around the world from India, China, Egypt, and even Mesopotamia.

I never understood why our ancestors have been called pagans. We should be pagans to them because we gave up their faith. There's no true religion. It’s all a bunch of concoted plagiated stories that never prevented people from killing each other. Spirituality is something different, powerful and ever lasting. This earth has seen religions come and go. It will see these ones now melting too some day. Hopefully what replaces them will be closer to inner peace. This Christianity thing is the more laughable of all. Virgin mary is Virgo Mary. She was born on sept 8th so she's a Virgo. Christians have plagiated the vedic astrology by the T. The Sun God has an affair with a doppelganger of his wife, and along comes a bastard kid none other than Saturn, ruler of Capricorn. When the wife of the sun returned, she got jealous and concocted with the lord of the underground to strike the bastard kid, who is than found again by the Sun and restored. By no mistake Jesus himself is a Capricorn and born on the 25th december, to replace the Roman Saturnalia fest when they used to put gifts in pine 🌲 trees. Some hundreds of years later, when the arabs saw a Jewish cult is becoming a hit, they decided to come up with a hit of their own. They couldn't let their cousins win the game. Frankly, i prefer the mythology of the Greeks. Their Gods were superbly built, they had female Goddesses so they were ethical in gender divison and Gods having kids with mortals was the norm. Maybe that's why they accepted Jesus so fast. I wish we'd see the marvelous temples the greeks once had and not the bullshit churches they came to build after the bible became a best-seller.

As I see it, it's a great way to show how the Christians destroyed everything including knowledge and killing people unfairly. This movie is one of the best movies ever done, and thanks to the director Alejandro Amenábar, Who showed up an extremely interesting and smart philosopher, Hypatia.
Thanks to him we can all know a little bit about this powerful woman, who has been removed from history because of her gender, unic personality and knowledge.

@gamesplayer2220 this is a true story, with just a little bit of artistic license (such as that the Library of Alexandria didn't exist anymore at that time).

Christianity did everything in its power to destroy knowledge back than. Islam did everything in its power to preserve and accumulate knowledge a few hundred years later. Inshallah.
