- Maid cafés first appeared in 2001 in Akihabara, Tokyo and soon spread throughout the country. Today there are so many cafés in Akihabara that they have become one of the peculiarities of that place.
In these cafés waitresses often dress in French maid outfits laden with ruffles and bows with a miniskirt. These coffee shops began as places whose usual customers were anime and video game fans that wanted to experience characters from manga and anime serving them real life.

You might have noticed that the maids are getting tired of having pictures and videos. One reason is that they want you to go to their cafes and take a 'cheki' photo (a polaroid photograph) with them for about 1000 yen and drink and eat.
When I stopped filming, they invited me to the cafes. I asked one maid who spoke with me if I could video inside the shop. She phoned the manager who said I could but he quoted me a price three times what the girl was advertising. So, I said no, but I might have a maid cafes video coming soon.

I'm not quite sure how to feel about having to pay 10 EUR to take a picture of someone advertising a business, albeit I can get it them getting tired (although it's somewhat part of the job, and every job has bits we dislike. I like wide angle shots if properly used so completely fine. And I'd also like some videos on: how have things changed payment wise (since Japan used to be so cash based), how have the former Sega towers changed, ...
Thanks for the feedback. The ‘cheki’ photos are taken once inside the maid cafe as a customer. You take it together or the girl alone and they sign and date it and write a little message on it.

I have no idea why they're charging you to record video of their shops it's basically free advertising of you recording them and posted them online so that Millions will watch it and persuade some to come to their shops and buy stuff
Even when it's rainy these girls are out there doing their job with a smile on their faces they're quite resilient and quite strong

I live in the US and I know we have a lot of great things here but whenever I see video of Japanese or even Korean cities they look so interesting and fun.
Just walking around city streets in Japan can be fun and interesting with all the signs, shops, and people.
There are so many maids advertising, are they all from different cafes or do some belong to the same place? I'm curious how these maid cafes can stay in business if there is so much competition, and how they differentiate themselves from others... How does a customer decide which cafe to go to if they are all basically the same?
I know there are some very niche cafes, like muscle girls, chubby, etc.... A video highlighting some of the unique themed cafes would be interesting. But in general, I enjoy casual interviews and interactions. You have some good ones, like the one with the idol group, and Cyborg Yuki.
Thanks for the feedback. Some of the maids do work at the same shops. Once they pull in a customer another fills in. Recently these shops are calling themselves concept cafes / bars and not strictly maid cafés. So as you mentioned various themes. But all have the same goal of getting people to spend money in their shop.
OMG i dint know that they have to earn in this way..during my 1st time trip to Osaka i as permission to take pic with one of the maid..but she kindly says ok..OMG i should have give her tips at less
Probably minimum wage plus a percentage cut of any customers they bring in.
