- This is my attempt to get a Kerbal to the surface of another planet and back in the least amount of time, and it took forever, thanks to Ion Engines.

Howdy folks! This mission took several real-time days to fly from start finish, despite it being the shortest game-time mission to another planet that I’ve ever attempted.
I think it’s worth clarifying what I mean when I call this a “speedrun”: My goal with this mission was to minimize the amount of game-time needed to transport a Kerbal to Eve and back, regardless of how much game-time was needed to transport Jeb’s eventual return ship to Eve (~200 days). I started the “speedrun” timer the moment Jeb left Kerbin, not when the first vessel was launched.
I’m still pondering what this kind of KSP speedrun ought to be called. “Prelaunch-assisted game-time speedrun” perhaps? In the end I opted to simply call it a “speedrun”, knowing that most of you would get the point and that the speedrun gaming purists in the audience might get a little irked.
If you have a suggestion for what to call this type of KSP speedrun, let me know!

A "PrepTime" Speedrun
Also that Ion Drive orbit jump was sick af, never seen anything like it
Cache-assisted speedrun.
"Shortest (crewed) trip to Eve"? "Survival speedrun"? (Thinking about life support mods, this could be a neat solution to do a crewed trip to Eve and back while not having to move with big habitats, food etc.)
How about "fastest journey"? I'm thinking of how Jeb might see it.
i suppose it would be a crew transfer speedrun? amazing video btw
This is such a cool mission concept! Deffo want to try something like this at some point
it’s the matt
@Matt would love to hear your opinion about what you would like stock KSP2 to feature
Now he's roaming for ideas lol, I hope ksp 2 releases soon for his sake.
Matt does a ksp speedrun!?!?
love your rollercoaster tycoon videos as well! please keep making them ❤
8:35 "GForce Endured: Yes"
Respects to Jeb for Entering Eve atm. at 11km/s
😂
Right?!? 11Km/s!!!
Can you EVEN IMAGE???
@@sgt_retiredcharlie4102 It would be necessary to calculate what G the cucumber experienced
@@sgt_retiredcharlie4102 thats the kerbin escape velocity whit the RSS mod. pretty fast indeed but still somewhat slow when it comes to spaceflight.
Well, I calculated 60g. Noticed by pausing every 5 seconds game time that at one point around 3km/s was lost in a 5 second period. Interestingly, that's around the 50 percentile mark for human impact survivability. Of course, this wasn't a simple impact, but tens of sustained bone crushing seconds. No human would survive that. Kerbals are the superior race for space travel.
ionic propulsion is ironically underrated - great video!
Ionically underrated
iconic propulsion
is
So its not underrated?
It clearly takes someone that works on actual spacecraft to make absolutely functionally aesthetically pleasing vehicles. Very nice.
that folding ion ship design caught me SO far off guard
I've never seen such a blatant disregard for kessler syndrome in my life!
Amazing job! I almost couldn't believe the title timer at first.
I mean, does it _really_ matter if everything ends up escaping the Kerbolar system at 30+ km/s?
Kerbols don't get Kessler syndrome, they get Kerbler syndrome...
You should see my save I'm just a beginner tho so I'm just worried about getting where I'm going my trash less of a concern atm
clearly you havnt seen my low kerin orbit
Brachistochrone trajectory straight into Eve's atmosphere. You sir, are a mad lad.
I love that you used the very NASA approved method of "Yeah, we'll just throw on more heat shields until they stop exploding. Yes he should be able to survive the g-forces." Great video as always!
Galileo probe, flattened by 230g deceleration: "What they said."
Your rockets always look really impressive, great speedrun!
fantastic way to deliver pancakes while they're still hot! will also turn your pilots into pancakes
Not only was this an amazing mission, but the craft look absolutely beautiful as well.
Just 1 word
WOW
10k + m/s into Eve's atmosphere. You sir have cajones of steel. Great vid!
Nit: cojones, not cajones. Cajones means "large boxes".
jeb is turned to a vapour during those descents
I wish I could get you more than one like, you certainly deserve it.
When I was seeing the solar panels, I was wondering: "Don't they just block themselves?"
Ion stage unfolds. "Ah. Cool. Makes sense."
Ablative ablative heatshields, the direct ion transfer stages, the helicopter stage. Even a nice looking SSTO. This video has it all.
You pretty much summed up my thoughts. I never saw anyone else do such impressive things with stock parts (DLCs are included in "stock" imo), and maybe only a couple few others who made such impressive trajectories etc. I really fell in awe watching this. (Bonus points for the "G-Forces endured: yes" lmao!)
Once again, the vehicles are super awesome and imaginative, great video, you always entertain. Keep it up!
Bracistocrones in KSP are not the easiest thing to figure out, can't imagine how long the maneuver node plotting took
We're gonna be doing a wholllle lot of those come KSP2 though, better to get the practice in now...
@@DeltafangEX they’ll supposedly have tools to help bacristocrone trajectories not be so difficult in KSP 2, but they’re just such a total bitch to get right now 😭 when I do it I try to reserve about 80% of my fuel for the main burns, and leave a good ~20% for trajectory corrections at the halfway point (preceding “flip n burn”) and again towards the end of the deceleration burn; hopefully KSP 2 meets that promise and they’ll be semi-automated or at least have a “mode” you could go into that has you burn in the exact right spot as your position changes relative to your target.
@@DeltafangEXthis statement aged like milk 😔
@@oberonpanopticon Considering it's been on the roadmap since before release and wasn't due to be here even by this point...no. No, I wouldn't say it has.
@@DeltafangEX Whatever helps ya cope 💪😔
What a beautiful lander. Something about how the struts are perfectly placed makes it look amazing.
What I like best is how you constantly push the limits of creativity and complexity with the stock / dlc parts. Amazing!
Would love to watch a video where you talk about what you want to see added to stock KSP2.
Gorgeous music to go along with gorgeous visuals 🎹
Enjoyed watching the mission but I also saw that you composed the background music yourself - great job, it's fantastic.
You're a madman!
impressive!
This is insanely good! I hope you do more crazy things like this!
edit: I forgot to say how amazing the spacecraft looks!
That chair with the engine strapped to it was so kerbal.
Master at work
really love this ship design with the xenon tanks and dawn engines!
This is an incredible concept and I think gives a lot of credence to what we all want to do is set up deep space things like transfer craft, fueling depots, satelitte relays. The concept here takes that and gives it real meaning and usefulness. Keep up the good work!
For a minute I thought you were going to aerobrake from 34,000m/s. Incredible mission and beautiful ship design!
G Forces Endured:
*Y E S*
A brilliant mission. I also enjoyed the piano piece you composed.
That must have been pretty expensive with all those ion engines
Absolutely brilliant!
beautiful visual beauty
To call this impressive, would be the Understatement of the year. I watched this in awe, three Times. Kudos Sir!
Phenomenal. Never seen anything like it.
Dude this is awesome!!! Well done mission
I was really wondering what that thing with all the folded solar panels was, until I saw it open up and reveal that absurd ion engine array, you're crazy
11/10 Done in style !
Your rockets are beautiful!!! Which is the first priority at all ksc when designing a rocket. Ion ship is no less! Amazing video!!!!
awesome video. vwery nice view of spacecrafts!
5:22 that was close
it's hard to get jumpscared in this game... and yet I did
Is your music piece, eccentric anomaly, available for download or streaming anywhere?
You are an absolute genius
I love the design
your ship design is really awesome...
You know i think nasa should hire this dude
His ksp projects are awesome!
Well…
Lol
He doesn't know

NONE OF YOU SAW THE JOKE
@@wilboersma9441 well you saw the joke at least
Really cool designs! I am still working on my return trip back from eve!
Отличная миссия! За 4 дня просто невероятно! Конструкцию из ионных двигателей точно попробую у себя
Excellent, great job.
Ksp speedruns are my new favorite type of speedrun
I laughed out loud when the Eve ascent vehicle fairing deployed to reveal a kerbal sitting in a chair. Totally didn't expect it to be that small of scale
Honestly best like and subscribe as ever made
Nice, very nice
cool design of the ssto Plane
-No, this isn't The Expanse, you can't just fly towards a planet!
-You underestimate my ion drives.
That ion probe design is very clever
I like how uniqe this mission is :) made me happy to watch.
Dang thats cool!!
Incredible. Do you plan on doing more speedruns?
I love the going to Eve portion, but I feel it is a little bit of cheat prestige of the return craft. Yes the Kerbal traveled to and from is true but the total mission time is much longer. Just my opinion, still an amazing Speedrun.
Thanks! You’re right about this not being a true speedrun. It’s more of a ‘pre-launch assisted game-time speedrun’ I suppose.
Great use of rotors for the Eve take-off. But I don't think I'll duplicate your 4 hr burn times on the xenon engines. Great video!!
Brachystochrone trajectory with ion engines !
Awesome
"what did you do this week?"
"nothing special, just went to another planet and came back"
James Holden would be proud of the transfer trajectories
I like how the ion torch ship got Jeb there in 2 days, but then he stood around on the surface until his ride home got there.
He didn’t. His ride home was there prior to him leaving Kerbin.
Very cool your video.
I have three astronauts trapped on Eve. I never managed to send a ship to leave the planet, last attempt the ship exploded at the entrance to Eve's atmosphere. :D
let me just accelerate with this stack of disposable tie fighters
Wow
Как же это круто, а мне даже ни разу не удалось хотя бы просто слетать туда и вернуться, хотя 5 лет играю)
I always wanted to slam into an atmosphere at insane velocity
Now you gotta try a Laythe or Eeloo speedrun
Ah yes, the constant-acceleration trajectory, spaceflight as God and von Braun intended.
Absolute ridiculousness
this channel is the definition of "quality over quantity"
Was blown away by not only the mission but the piano, go to look it up and that's you too?!
Me after not carefully reading the title. "Why the heck does this ship have that much Xenon? A few minutes later "Oh snap!"
"G-Force: Yes"
What was the number? How much G-Force?
Also using a helicopter to get through the thickest part of Eve's atmosphere; that's genius! I've never seen anyone do that before. I should try that sometime.
I'm just happy when I take off.
No persistent thrust!?
Also, I notice this isn't a *true* brachistochrone (a path of least time, where you're constantly firing engines there, turn around halfway, then burn to slow down. I wonder how difficult that'd be.
We'll find out in KSP2, that's for sure. I wanna see how many heatshields hold up against entering the atmosphere of a Super-Jupiter, or a brown dwarf when arriving at interstellar velocities.
Unless you have ungodly levels of patience or days of time to kill, you can’t do a true interplanetary brachistochrone trajectory in the stock game without the persistent thrust mod. This gets close tho
Hello, I have been going back to KSP recently, and that question might sound silly but what visual mod (or mods) is used in that video ? Especially to have Eve and Kerbin to look like this from space ? Thanks!
How can you do Eve and back in 4 days, thats bonkers.
The infrastructure to make this all happen is incredible. Imagine how much that would cost in real life...
Not as much as you might think. If you take the full annual US military budget and use it we would already have thousands of people colonising mars and having shipyards in space and mining asteroids… and who know what more…
But killing each other has more priority I guess
Well, that gave a new meaning to "ablative heat shield!" :D But seriously, the classical music and extreme mission makes me think of Bradley Whistance. I always wished he did a speedrun of this type -- fast orbital transfers. I have a question though. Kerbin only has 6-hour days, so why do the timestamps at 8:08 show 17:18 and 16:33?
You can enable Earth time in the game settings instead of Kerbin time (default).
@@jamieloganaerospace6404 Ohhhh! I didn't know that.
You're better at this game than I am.
where can i hear eccentric anomaly? is it on spotify?
I've gotten to eve in less than 5 minutes. However, I did crash into the surface at near light speed. Making a return voyage... improbable.
I don't know much about space stuff.....love Eccentric Anomaly though.....mook.
I feel very inadequate right now.
мега круто реально
Super-impressive. Do DEVO know you stole their heat-shield design? 😄
Kerbal Space Program minimalists but it's opposite day:
How many debris you want?
Yes
*confused screaming*
G-Forces for Jeb... Un calculatable.
How many times did your game crash during this?
May I please get the craftfile?
