Orchids Show botanical Garden Rio de Janeiro, Brasil

The Orchid Garden of the Botanical Garden of Rio de Janeiro holds the first exhibition “Summer Orchids” from February 23 to 25 (Friday, Saturday and Sunday). The event featured two guest orchid nurseries and various activities, such as talks, courses, guided tours, video screenings and plant raffles.
The great capacity for hybridization of orchids is a striking characteristic of this family. Man, always in search of perfection and something even more beautiful, has used this natural ability to produce new plants with even more perfect shapes, different colors and that also bloom at different times of the year. The Summer Orchids exhibition presents several of these hybrids to the public, as well as some native and exotic species that bloom in the hottest season of the year.
“Through artificial hybridization (done in a laboratory) it is possible to obtain plants that flower more than once a year and at different times of the year. Thus, plants were created that bloom in summer, generally considered a less rich season for these flowers,” explains Delfina de Araujo, curator of the Orquídea JBRJ.
