Justin Medeiros || Natty or Not

  • Every day I get AT LEAST 5 inbox messages asking for me whether or not so and so is using steroids. It isn't always so easy as LOOKING at a picture, and they aren't always "steroids."
    In my first Natty or Not on a CrossFit Athlete I hope to educate the community on the methods I use to determine the likelyhood that someone is using PEDs.
    Mind you, you will never know for sure, AND it is a druge tested sport. So everyone is innocent until proven guilty.
    This doesn't mean that we can't have some fun though.
    So in my introduction to the CrossFit world and "Natty or Nots" I figured who better than the winner of the last CrossFit Games. Justin Medeiros. Who I suspect will be winning them until he no longer wants to...
    Enjoy
    -Coach Andy

    Justin was my first friend when I stepped into a crossfit gym in 2014 and I can tell you first hand he's one of the hardest working and authentic dudes I know. Back then he'd do 3 hours of wrestling practice then come straight into the gym a crush the compeitiors programming we were doing at the time, his energy seemed endless haha. 100% Natty.

    Very cool. The first person I've heard mentioning puberty in terms of strength/muscle growth which is a thought I've very much had. We are also now seeing the first real groups of youngsters who have grown up with CrossFit. When I was a kid, soccer was the main sport, something I did everyday, trained hard at and reached a very decent level of. If CrossFit was around maybe I'd have put the hours into that and reached a decent level as a CrossFit athlete. Over the next few years we are going to see more and more young athletes making it to the top rungs of the CrossFit elite as it's what they've trained as since they were kids.

    Love listening to you talk, always entertaining. Great points and 1 I think so many people fail to respect and lead them to talk negatively about is GENETICS. There's a reason why certain people can function at the level they are at. Michael Jordan practiced his a$$ off sure, but it was also his genetics that allowed him to function at his best along with all the practice. Its why so many professional athletes tend to play dual sports in school. Sure, hard work will always lead to the best version of oneself, but to perform as an elite level athlete, you're pre-disposed to that, add in the hard work and that's what leads to your greatness.
    Also....wrestling for life- best sport I've ever been a part of.

    My son started CrossFit 7 months ago at just turning 14 and in that 7 months. He's back squatting 97.5kg, clean 85kg and snatching 62.5kg also his endurance is insane. It's not the weights that are impressive with the kids, it's how quick they learn or there body adapts. He throws up 25/30 bar MU easy and one day he can't do something, then the next day he's passing me like lightning! It's crazy... I think videos like this are important for the new youth culture in CrossFit, it shows you can succeed without the gear!..I wish there was more random testing...seeing the extremely fast progression at this age first hand makes me really believe what maderios can do..

    Great video. I guess a devils advocate argument would be could a clean Justin beat a geared top tier CrossFit athlete? In other words, is it possible for a clean person to win in a sport where clearly there is a drug problem? The thing that worries me is PEDs are so ridiculously effective that is just feels impossible for someone clean to be good enough to beat a field of elite people who are also geared.

    As he touched on, there are so many different kinds of steroids. Ellie Gabbard popped for a kind that helps blood oxygen. Blood oxygen, in a muscular endurance competition is critical.
    Sarah S, Katrin, Amanda Barnhart have no hips. They have an overabundance of hair, specifically on their arms. From an anatomical/physiological standpoint, these are anomalies but in Crossfit Females, they're typical. Why?
    A top Olympic lifter popped and was removed from completion. He was tested! Did he just start using? Gtfoh!
    Im an intermediate level bodybuilder. After a grueling, to failure type of workout Im gassed. That's whats supposed to happen. But these Crossfitters do two a days, 4-5xs a week for months. Muscular endurance/aerobic capacity in the AM then Lifting in the PM. Lemme guess, it's the great sleep from their mattresses and whoop trackers and all those great supplements from 1st Phorm, right?
    The top athletes certainly have genetic predispositions, but to get there, stay there and perform at such high level bodily stress, Im not buying the natty status.

I know better than to think every athlete at high levels are natural, I also know better than to think they’re all taking something let alone a lot. In order for them to get this far- at baseline their work ethic and talent is freaky. The extra recovery helps A LOT, but it doesn’t create champs from chumps. Idk this guy that well but from what you’ve shown and what I’ve seen, he seems like a crazy freak athlete with a lot of physical attributes that would lead him towards success. Idk. I am glad you are talking about this subject. I have been watching the Crossfit Competitions for a few short years now. I look at most of the people competing and I think, "They do not look natural. They are surely on some type of PED." But there are just a few that are at the top that may appear to be natural. Justin is one of the few that does not stand out, to look like he is on PEDs. Most of the rest do look like they are on PEDs. I Believe Mat Frazier was on PEDs. And I believe most all of the rest at the top of that sport are on PEDs. But Justin does not appear like them. He looks natural (Freeky but Natural). I think that if most people were competing in this sport naturally, the Recovery from the competitions/workouts would be much more difficult. And what is one of the major benefits of using PEDs? Recovery time. I also just watched your video about Tia Clair Toomey. I do believe she has been using PEDs for several years. And that Mal O'Bryan, is now being trained by Mat Frazier. I believe she is using them, and with his help, she should be able to get away with it more easily than some of the other younger competitors coming into the sport of Crossfit. Even almost knowing that this sport is allowing the use of PEDs in it, I enjoy watching it. I enjoy it as much as SEC College Football. I suffer from severe major depression. And these are 2 of the few things that quite often, I can watch, that seem to help me pass the time. Much of the time I can watch it and actually get interested in it. That is a good thing for me. On your videos, if you could not use the "F" word, it would be nicer. To me the the "F" word is offensive. But glad you are talking about this subject.

    As always, enjoyed the video, but disagree that your presentation proved Justin Madeiros is natty. I dont know whether he is, or isn't, natty, but he sure could be.
    While you covered a lot of stuff very well, Inthink you missed some stuff:
    1. There are PEDs that will make a 90/95 guy a 105/110 guy compared to Justin's 100.
    2. Let's assume Justin's strength and in-event recovery ability is natural. But, what if he lags behind others in event to event recovery when the games have 2-3 events in one day, or in day to day recovery. If that's the case, he might use PEDs to maintain his 100 ability instead of dropping to 90/95, compared to somone else, who recovers more quickly and effectively, and can naturally maintain his 90/95 ability from one day to the next.
    There are other scenarioes where he might need to use a stimulant.
    Most of the top crossfit athletes have participated in sports that developed a good strength base, so their PEDs would be about endurance and recovery.
    Athletes without a strength base would use strength PEDs.
    I think it's doubtfull that most, if not all the games atheletes are using PEDs aimed at his/her specific athletic weakness.
    Keep up the good work.

Even with USADA testing. I be willing to bet top 1000 crossfitters have used some sort of enchament drug at some point. Plus his whole 90 to 95 argument is pretty weak especially in a recovery sport like crossfit.

    It assumes a lot that Justin will keep on winning the CF Games because of his excellent genetics. The rest of the field doesn't have any? Justin can't make a mistake on a workout that costs him the Games? The mental side doesn't matter in the test of fitness? Rich, Mat, and Tia were not locks every year they won. I don't know, but it seems like there are a bunch of factors that could allow someone else to win the Games.

    The only problem with your analysis is that its not mathematically sound. If he were clean then he would have to be naturally 30-40% better than the nearest PED user, or the PED users are naturally 30-40% worse than him. What is also missing is the fact you are looking at a snapshot of time on his Instagram. He did one movement then what? Did he deadlift or backsquat that much weight and then perform a 40 min AMRAP, or any of the CF WODS? Did he do that 4x a day for 3 days? The answer is no. Use that same method and go back to the first CF Videos and then compare the lifts, times and scores with last years. Suddenly everyone is starting heavy lifts where two years ago the ended? Things that make you go hmmmmm???

    • @hillerfit
      @hillerfit  Před 2 lety +2

      I kind of get lost in the back end of what you are sayng there. And clearly I was just trying to be abstract in my percentages or 90-97% and trying to state that even those using cannot beat him.
      As far as the AMRAPS you mentioned. He was a wrestler. No greater sport out there when you consider conditioning in the lb per lb spectrum.

    • @shanehinds1940
      @shanehinds1940 Před 2 lety

      @@hillerfit what I'm saying is most PED's have been shown to increase mass or metabolic rates by 30-40%. So mathematically you could say that if Justin was clean and we can assume that say two or three of the top five athletes are on PEDS. We can then say Justin is naturally 30-40% more athletic than those closest competitors that are using. Another way to prove this assumption is using the same technique you used with his Instagram with Crossfits past games data. How is that these athletes many of them the same, have increased their weight totals and decreased their WOD times significantly in a time span that doesn't support natural increases or reductions. Hey either way good conversation man! I like what your doing. Personally I think everyone should just come out with what stacks their on. But that doesn't sell protein powder does it!
