It was a whole dance recital that he had to do in one go. With exaggerated movements to help the animation studio get precise bits. It's very endearing to see how animation was so fun.

What a lot of people don't notice is that in the version with Stewie Jerry's reflection can still be seen on the floor.

The sequence was laid out and timed, originally solely to Gene's dancing. 3,360 distinct photostats (registration) were given to Ray Patterson + Ed Barge, who spent over six months animating these two minutes, adhering to the layout, perspective, camera moves. Then MGM's cost-indifferent ink and painters would airbrush turning edges on Jerry and reflections on the palace floor, to not look stark. Combined after with mattes.
Note: Only do this if you have the budget and the genius of 1940s MGM.^^
And all Seth Macfarlane did was have his animators trace most of the frames!

Tracing or not, could you imagine how long it must have taken the animators to replicate, frame by frame, every individual motion from the original? Kudos to them.

probably not nearly as long or as difficult as the original, which they probably had to do entirely by hand with no software assistance lol
I crossed my eyes so Jerry and Stewie overlapped. It was perfect. It's amazing how both videos are synced so perfectly.

I tried it but instead i got 3 Gene Kellys, 2 Stewies and one Jerry.
Lol I sat here doing it for a minute straight and my eyes are feel werid but worth it.
I was able to do it for about a minute before it hurt. But it was interesting seeing how my eyes worked. I would see the crown on stewie’s head, and sometimes Jerry’s head with stewie head sides. Also Jerry with stewie’s body and vice versa.

Yeah I noticed that during the episode, I couldn't remember who was originally in place of stewie though, I thought it was a real life young girl, and I was wondering how they erased her so well. Instead all they had to do was put him over making it a lot easier.

Reportedly, during the making of the original sequence, they were going to use Mickey Mouse, and Walt Disney supposedly even agreed, but Roy Disney said no. Walt Disney Studios was in debt after World War II, and Roy said they had no business making cartoons for other people.
I can see why, considering all the struggles they went through before Mickey.

The irony is now that Fox is a child company of Disney, Disney own the rights to Family Guy and Stewie is now technically a Disney character. So in the end, Gene technically ended up dancing with a Disney character, even if it wouldn't be till long after he was dead
But here's where things get interesting. Feeling bad about his brother Roy having the final say and upon seeing the finished product, Walt decided to make things up by hiring the song's composer, Sammy Fain, to compose music for songs in Alice In Wonderland and Peter Pan, where production of those 2 films officially began both after the war and Anchors Aweigh's release. Fain would go on to compose 2 more songs for the company with "Once Upon A Dream" from Sleeping Beauty and "Someone's Waiting For You" from The Rescuers.

Gene Kelly is just incredible, I just love how he's dancing with Stewie and Jerry, its just incredible, he's definitely one of the best dancers Ive ever seen.

I love how Seth Macfarlene incorporates a lot of content or references from back in the day. Being born in the early 2000's, even things from the 90's were still there, I don't really remember EVERYTHINF, but watching family guy, I was introduced to many songs, movies, tv shows, etc 😂😂 I absolutely love this dance routine!

Family Guy introduced me to a lot of films and shows I would have never heard of on my own
I think there's a reddish tint to Family Guy's version because back then, they used a kind of film that didn't capture the true colors of the sets and such, so the Family Guy colorist recolored the scene as it would have naturally appeared. That, or they did it to accommodate Stewie.
Caroline Smith I think it's a little of both. Obviously the look of the original dates itself, which is perfectly fine, but Stewie would stick out like a sore thumb.

Like i know the animation is cool and all. But we really gotta appreciate the fact a man did that much choreographed dancing for a couple minutes straight, with an invisible partner, where it's meant to be a duet, alone in a room... like gah damn what a legend

Such an impressive work considering that it was made in 1945. I also like how characters in old cartoons look more lively and detailed in their movements with various facial expressions.
One of my favorite Family Guy skits. Introduced me to Gene Kelly. I've got a few Gene Kelly movies in my Netflix queue now.
0:05-0:11 and 1:45-1:47 It's like Jerry and Stewie are both singing dancing and talking together. It's like they're both copying each other without getting annoyed. Kelly's family must be so honored and so proud to see some cartoon characters dancing with the famous Gene Kelly.

This was great. Seth Macfarlane & Co. did an aboslutely marvelous job editing it with Stewie.
I mean they basically had to redo it. I don't think it was a simple paste over, I think they got the film out of archive from WB and did their own animation on top of the original film.
@@MatchstickMan You can actually somewhat see Jerry's reflection on the floor so it's probably just pasted over. Not trying to undermine the amount of effort given for this dance number though

Plus, there's a lot of angles where Jerry was taller than Stewie and there's no obvious doctored frames.

While yes it was copied, I grew up watching and loving Gene Kelly, while growing up I never related to anyone because no one else had ever heard of him. For a cartoon in today's time bring in wonderful music such as this and a great dancer as Gene Kelly is outstanding.

Would've been better if they could've gone the extra step and fixed the Jerry's reflection on the floor so it was Stewie's, but that's okay--this was still really amazing :)

With the hindsight of knowing the technological leaps and bounds they had to do to make things like 'Who framed Roger Rabbit' *work* in a realistic 3D space, Seeing this and how they were able to do with a *minimal* amount of effort in the formoer production, it's pretty astounding. Imagine how many takes he had to do to get the timing, and imagined positioning down right.
